have a very busy mind - busy, negative, aggsresive, anxoius, depressed to name a few things it does very well.

i like to exercise etc..and i eat well enough...meditation is my last hurdle...i did try it before in my early 20's and i did like it..again i tried it a few years back in some Budhist centre..any one really into it?

thinking of taking a weekend retreat somewhere.

does it really calm the mind? Or is it a load of palarva...i hear Billy Connolly is well into his Mindfullness Meditation whihc I would like to try

Although i dont meditate myself i do believe in alternative therapies being a trained holistic masseur and i fully believe that meditation, in the right setting, can bring a state of calm to a busy and constantly moving mind.

The fact you tried it in a Budhist centre for the first time was a good thing...as that would be a really good setting, nice and quiet surroundings without fear of disturbance which will just hinder your meditative state. I am gonna try it out myself at home soon as i believe i need to refocus my energies back towards college work at least for a month or two and meditaton may help me bring a balance back to my life.

If you do go ahead with it i wish you good luck, and do tell what results came of your journey into the spiritual:)

I find it essential, I try and make time each day or at least every 3 days other wise I get frazzled, there is a goot bit on it if you look in the spirituality forum.

When I was a silly depressed teenager and went to councelling (I know, woe is me) she tried out all these meditation techniques with me. And they worked alright. Should probably start doing that again instead of listening to really, really loud music.

I tried to get into meditation a couple of years back. In fact, it was just around this time, and I just tried to quiet myself for a bit every day. It didn't last long though . . . I just didn't have much patience for it. I'd like to try again though, maybe during lent this year?

There are some good cds out there that you can listen to for the 15 min sessions and keep your mind focused, you will feel like you've had about 6 hours sleep when you do it, its well worth giving it a shot.

Cloona Health Centre in Westport is very good. They do satyananda yoga, yoga nidra (a kind of meditation), massage, reflexology and guided contemplative walks. Most people go back at least once. If you don't mind a restricted detox diet (you'll feel great afterwards) they have great week long and weekend programmes. The changing of seasons around the Equinox is traditionally the time for cleansing so March might be a good time to go there. The centre is in a lovely setting and they have a really professional, gentle approach.

I tried yoga and meditation in other places but it didn't work at all. Cloona is the only retreat that works for me and I got an excellent yoga nidra CD recently by a yogi based in Sweden called Swami Janakananda Saraswati. 20 minutes of yoga nidra and I feel like I've been asleep for 3 hours.

I've started trying mindfulness recently, I also have a very "busy" mind and can focus too much on negative things. You can get CDs and MP3s of mindfulness body scans, they guide you though relaxing and focusing on each part of your body. The idea is that you focus on the present moment rather than anything else that's going on. It feels strange at first but I can already see how it would be helful if you stick to it.

If you google "mindfulness body scan" you might find a free download

Old thread so closed, though if you're looking for yoga classes maybe have a look in this, the Yoga(and Pilates) forum Click here

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
