How can you define favourite? Playing style, "best", inspirational, leader, nicest, best to watch.....

Players that I've admired in the past....Geoghegan, Sean Fitzpatrick, Guscott, Scott Quinnell, Justin Marshall, Lomu, Keith Wood, Cullen, Eales, Jeremy Davidson, Mick Galwey...hmm I seem to have a second row thing!!

These days...Chabal has a presence that's hard to ignore, BOD is always hard to ignore, DOC just because, Elsom, Warwick and David Wallace

Scott Gibbs, George Gregan, Christian Cullen Joost Van der Westhuizen and N'Tamack were all favourites of mine. To pick one it would be Gregan.

    Right now nobody touches BO'D.

Favourite young players would be Earls and Pocock.

The underrated, bullsh*t free legend that is John Hayes. I even over look him standing on Cian Healys head last year.

Chester Williams was un-believable on Lomu rugby for the Playstation and as such, I became a massive fan of him.

What a question! On the current stage there are so many superb players: BOD, ROG, Jonny Wilkinson, Dan Carter, the Aussie newboy James O'Connor (one of the youngest ever players to be capped by the Wallabies) and going to be a legend. Past greats - well where do you start? The whole Welsh team from the 1970s....with the great JPR Williams and Gareth Edwards head and shoulders above anyone else playing at the time. Bill Beaumont, Keith Wood, Ollie Campbell, Tony Ward......but if it was name one current player or be shot it would have to Brian O'Driscoll -legend - and the best is yet to come!

This YouTube clip from 'that match' - the Barbarians v All Blacks from 1973 which will forever be ingrained in the memory of all who were priveliged to see it - the finest hour of the pre-professional era! Gareth Edwards finishes off a try which involves many of the great names and starts on the Barbarians own line without a break. So I guess it has to be Gareth Edwards from the golden age.

If an underrated player is rated by so many, then what is he?

Rated lower than he should by most outside of Ireland. Castigated by British and Southern Hemisphere press at various times.

    A legend in my book.

Hayes isn't underrated. I am a big fan of the guy though.

Watching Brian O'Driscoll play both live and on TV has been a privilege. He's the kind of player you'll be telling your kids about.

John hayes and alan quinlan. First one is obvious hayes just goes on and on. Quinny brings something unknown to a game ok maybe not always legal but sometimes watch winning and is a great talisman for the team. Plus on his last munster performance can now cover any position in a starting 15 well almost :p

true that he gave a kick or two kearney would have been proud of :pac:... which makes ones think .. while going from the changing rooms to the pitch does quinlan think.. " right im giving this one socks" or did he just have extra energy to burn

Has to be a forward for me, Keith Woods when i was growing up, David Wallace, Heaslip both top at the minute, Im a bit of a Neil Best fan hes not afraid to get stuck in.
First experience of rugby was looking at a book of sport when i was 8 or 9 years old had a picture of an Ireland second row with ears taped back getting up from a ruck looked like the incredible hulk to me, it was around 87-88 not sure who but that was my inspiration for starting to play, names Neil Francis and Paddy Johns stick in my head but not sure if they were playing then

Rated lower than he should by most outside of Ireland. Castigated by British and Southern Hemisphere press at various times.

    A legend in my book.

In fairness, practically everyone in Ireland rates him highly, and we rate him because he is an excellent lifter in the lineout, and he has been solid and consistent for so many years. Fans love that kind of thing. Look at Enlish fans and Simon Shaw. There is no reason really why anyone outside Ireland should rate him too highly though. Consistent over long periods of time is hardly a reason for a non Irish fan to care.

There is no team in the world that ever played against Ireland where the coach ever had reason to lose sleep because his team was facing John Hayes at tighthead in the morning.

Yeah, we love him in Ireland, but underrated he is not. He has exactly the right amount of recognition.

    Ever: Joost van der Westhuizen

    Ireland: David Wallace

Munster (apart from Wally): Paul Warwick, although that's a tough one.

Denis Hickie - so much of what was good for Leinster and Ireland during his time came from his magnificent Wavin pipes.
