What's the worse crime? Rape or murder?

While rape is a terrible crime, I think murder is of higher gravity. I mean rape victims still get to live (mind you, the quality of life can vary considerably).

    Which is worse? 7 votes

    Rape.

Withe the greatest of respect to the OP, not a subject I'd like to put much thought into except to say both are terrible crimes and judging level of each one varies according to the poor individual involved.

In my opinion they're equally evil.

Seriously I see little or no difference in gravity.

    Rape victims can still breathe.

    So, Murder.

Both are something that entail something that has being done against the victims will so they're both equally as bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,148 ✭✭✭plein de force

i don't think they can be compared
they're both truly horrific acts that have completely different effects on the victim and victim's family (with respect to murder).
they both unleash true, horrible pain on people, true sadness and emotional turmoil equally but on different levels

Funny how the computer games industry doesn't seem to think so.

Games are set in a virtual world where endless possibilities arise. If you're gonna go out and reenact what you see in a game then you really need to have your head checked.

Games, like films have age ratings on them.

Murder would have to be the worst as your dead. But rape victims can go through trauma which would make them rather be dead.

Is this a multiple choice question? If so, I check:

Murder as you have a chance to get your life back together with rape, not true with murder though.

    Seriously?

A penis up a vagina can = murder?

I know it's a horrible, emotionally destroying experience. But, at the end of the day you're still alive.

- at someone even asking this question.

    or
    giving somebody food poisoning.

Em...I can't imagine how the victim would feel after rape and I don't know how I could keep going but I suppose with the right help the victim would recover and you only live once, so murder.

by that logic poking someone is also equally bad?

What about death by snoo snoo? That probably 'straddles' but categories I'd imagine.

I'd imagine rape. You'd still be alive after, and have to go through some pretty horrible emotions. At least when you're dead, you're dead, and that's the end of it.

I agree. But I think the whoe penis-up-vagina thing can be easily be trivialised, especially by men. Rape is one of the worst things you can do to a woman. They are biologically way more sensitive to this kind of thing.

I'm pretty sure men don't shrug it off so easily either, I think it ends in suicide more often.

    Murder for the victim's family
    Rape for the victim

When you're dead you aren't suffering.
When you've been raped you could be suffering forever.

I'd rather be dead than have to suffer the trauma of rape.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,555 ✭✭✭✭AckwelFoley

    murder is worse of course.

Taking the premise that the gift of life is the most important thing, then i think its safe to say that the extinguishing of life is more of a loss to the victim than rape, yet while the commiting of either crime in my opinion are equally depraved, the loss of a life is greater.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,178 ✭✭✭✭NothingMan

Well here's my hypocritical thoughts on it.

If someone where to do either to someone I knew I would probably be worse emotionally by rape.

However if it were to happen to me I would much rather suffer being raped than murder.

You can see from the responses guys and girls have very different views on this.

Funny how this has come up this evening.

Just finished watching the news and there was a story about a Limerick taxi driver who got sentenced today for raping a student he was bringing home one night.

    He was given 7 years.

Eamon Lillis got 1 month less for killing his wife.

I dont think the Law views them as Black and White. You will often see rape cases get more severe sentences than murder cases and vice versa.

Each is viewed gravely but each individual case will have unique merits and demerits in a court of law.

I mean heck, youve never seen A Time to Kill?

I don't see why the question is invalid...

    How about:

    1. Being tortured for 50 years via the worst torture methods imaginable

    or

    2. Being murdered - 2 quick shots to the head.

You're still alive in the former but I know which I'd prefer.

Both crimes are heinous, but the punishment should be different of course.
A bullet in the head for murder/ or life meaning life
A bullet in the 8alls for rape/ castration as an option with a mandatory 15 years in jail.

A number of American States still have the death penalty on the books for rape. However, it's sortof redundant since sentences are automatically commuted by the Federal courts which consider the penalty to be disproportionate.

Still a possibility in some other countries, however.

    NTM

Murder has been considered to be one of the worst crimes that can be committed for hundreds if not thousands of years.

Rape, in Ireland anyways, has only been recognised as being of similar severity in the last 30 odd years or so.

Also, murder is considered an extremely serious crime in almost every country in the world while in some countries rape is still not seen as that serious an offence as, say adultery (or being raped as the media would have it).

From a historical and multicultural point of view therefore, it seems that murder is still the reigning champion.

Neither of them are as bad as genocide though.

the murdered persons family get to bury there loved one, the rape victim lives the nightmare night after night, never to trust another person again, not all rapists get caught, so u never know who is standing bestde you in the supermarket, i know if it were me, id take the bullet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Riddle101

I say rape is a lot worse then murder. Rape victims have to live with that torment until they die. It completely destroys people form the inside and can also lead to suicide. At least with death you're spared the torture and the misery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,217 ✭✭✭pookie82

I'd rather be murdered than raped. A million times over. Would much rather be dead than held down, raped and tortured with the trauma and memory of it afterwards. I know some people come through it but couldn't see myself ever getting over something like that. Would honestly rather be dead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Useful.Idiot

Rape victims may suffer trauma but they can still live their life, be with their friends, grow old and eventually become happy again. They could also find solace if their attacker is found behind bars.

    Murder, you're gone. thats it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭ChocolateSauce

I think murder is very obviously of much greater gravity, and the people with law degrees who make and embody our laws agree: Rape usually carries a sentence of between 5-15 years depending on the severity; murder is usually between 15-35.
