Are we allowed discuss this? Spam and Boards hack

Hi guys,

Im not sure if this topic is allowed to be discussed as there may be an investigation going on. but if its open for discussion, has anyone noticed an increase in Spam on the registered email with boards? I have never had spam thankfully but since the hack Im getting between 5-10 pharmacy spam mails a day which is becoming very annoying as I use my phone for email when on the move?

Does anyone think its related, am I the only person to experience this.

To MODS, if this is a temp barred subject feel free to delete or close but if its not allowed to be discussed will you just post why not..

Btw, this might be better suited to the Site Development forum (maybe), for the devs to check out. Maybe they have disabled software that prevents spam, along with other software (like the biki for example) after the hack happened, I've no idea if they have, but it may be better suited there.

I use an email address unique to boards.ie and I've never received a single spam message to it.

Maybe its just me but Ive had my .ie for nearly 3 years without any spam or unwanted mail. Now since the hack Im getting about 10 mails.. Its just so annoying... It could be something else but Im careful with that addy not to register it too much... I guess Ill just have to put up with it...

I have no issues with spam on my registered email either.
Its an address I only use on 2 forums (Here & TomTom)

I used to normally receive only 1 Spam a week on my email, as it is the address I use only for trusted sites etc. However in the past few weeks I have been getting 2-3 a day. I don't know if it is connected to the hack of boards.ie or not. I have another email address I use for most things on line where I don't care about spam etc. But used my main one for registration on boards.ie.

Well Im glad Im not the only one. My span is increasing daily and looking back at when it started it is only after the hack. Although the other guys have not been effected this could be for several reasons.

1. Firstly the hackers I can only presume stole tens of thousands of email addresses which they know are live and real

2. I dont use spam filtering and have a direct .ie mail coming in without any website filtering etc

3. the time line is too similar, I never ever had spam in three years of having a .ie and like yourself tony Im careful about this address.

Im using a gmail address for here, and any spam i got before was caught by the gmail spam filter, but since the hack here i've been getting a lot of spam, between 4-8 a day...

im using hotmail and I have no spam (apart from junk dat i usually get!). If your really sick of spam: block the sender

Don't think you really grasp Spam, they are not sent from the same address most of the time, they are sent from email addresses made up and from email addresses got from mailing lists on the internet, that can include your own address.

I have an account i set up specifically for the boards.ie registration and email notifications. I've never had anti-spam set up on it as it doesnt get used elsewhere (privately hosted). I'm still not getting any spam to it after the hack though. your spam issues *may* be related to the hack, its certainly a logical conlcusion to come to, but it could just be coincidental.

I'll ask about the admins & devs and see if they have any ideas, as Gordon says, maybe they disabled something or didnt re-enable a filter since the site came back online.
