Everyday, Google News has a new article about the surge in android growth, how android will have globally passed the iphone next year etc etc.

In Ireland though Meteor and O2 only offer two android phones, but there seems to be talk of way more android phones on here.

So I'm just interested to see how android is being adopted here...

Apparantly Meteor has a 3 week waiting list for a hero - after my mate decided to go green, he went in and was told he'd be waiting a while!

I'm surprised 3 Ireland dont have any android phones yet though.

Got my Hero the week it came out on Meteor. Popped my UK SIM in the other day and had the full market:D

    Happy days

Bought a G1 not too long ago for customisation purposes, absolutely love it to bits.

Have it running the Cyanogen Mod with a Hero Theme and an 8GB Class 6 SD letting me use a 32MB Swap, 256MB Ext4 for my applications and then 7.5GB left over as FAT32 goodness. Android is the way to go, it's possibilities are endless and it's open source. Here's mine...

I've owned maybe 15 different mobiles over the years... and the N97 is possibly the most irritating one of them all.

The N958GB wasn't hassle free either.

I'm quite close to giving Nokia and Symbian the boot... but Camera is a deciding factor... want (don't need) something more than 5MP next time.

Have a G1 and absolutely love it even though it is underpowered.
Currently running one of the 2.1 builds on xda-developers on it.
Love pretty much everything about it so ill be sticking with Android for the forseeable future and looking forward to WMC to see what other phones will be coming out.

Oh and dont forget Vodafone have the Tattoo which is android aswell

I have a Hero and it's an amazing device.

I'm looking forward to HTC's launch of Android 2.1 with Sense UI though :)

    Hero II should be interesting!

Nexus One is basically a HTC Hero with a faster processor, improved display but lacks the Sense UI, instead being raw Android.

I'm kinda reckoning that HTC will launch something rather similar but with Sense UI once they finish beta testing the software sometime in March.

I got a Samsung Galaxy Spica i5700, its a fantastic phone, theres loads of potential there. I dont think its got the selection of the iPhone or Nokia S60, but its more hackable than the iPhone and swisher than s60.

Best bit is the phone was only €130 to upgrade to on the most basic contract you can get, no €50 a month "free" iPhone for me thanks very much.

Edit: There also rumors that it will get android 2.1 in a few months, woohoo !

Have gone through a G1 (1yr), Hero (2 Months) and onto a Nexus One since December, all very good, 2.1 on Nexus is blisteringly fast!

you must work for Google... the nexus was only released in Jan, apart from a special staff only issue in December

I do indeed work for Teh GOOG, although I upgraded from G1 to Hero myself with Meteor - Hero sitting at home now gathering dust which is a shame, and while I liked the combination of Android 1.5 and HTC Sense, Android 2.1 on the Nexus is the business.

The Hero was actually a bit of a pain as a lot of the Google-written apps at that time (Googles, Navigation in Google Maps) could only run on 1.6 minimum (i.e. the G1). HTC skipped the update from 1.5 to 1.6 in favour of (apparently) going straight to 2.0.

    If only I could!

Although I've head of people using foreign SIM cards (Free pay-as-you-go from the UK, for example) in their Irish phones and then downloading the paid apps over WiFi - seems to work fine.

There's talk of the N1 in Vodafone sometime in the next month. Heard anything about that? I know you don't work on android, but surely people talk to each other in there!;)

I did actually hear a rumour about it coming to Vodafone, that was a couple of months ago before it ever actually launched, I just saw a list of operators by country. No update on timeline though, sorry!

    I've got a HTC Tattoo, Android 1.6

I assumed the Full Android Market would be available in Ireland when i bought it, Unfortunately not, only free apps :(

Yeah, it's a pain alright. When the only way to get an Android phone was by ordering on Ebay or wherever it might have made sense, but the fact that they are now offering the phones in retail stores makes it a bit annoying not to offer the paid apps to go with it!

Yep, after 3 years of symbian (N95 - N95 8GB which were great) I got a HTC Desire.

Possibly. I don't know what Nokia have in store but Symbian^4 looks fairly promising as an OS. No way will that be out on any devices until early 2011 though. Symbian^3 devices are coming out late 2010 so they should be somewhat interesting to see.

At the moment I wouldn't even consider a Symbian device with the current state of the OS. When Symbian^3 and Symbian^4 are released we'll see how it fares.

I went from an N95 8GB (An EXCELLENT symbian based phone) to an N97 Mini (Had it for three days before I returned it, enough said...) to my HTC Desire. For touch screen phones Symbian S60 doesn't stand a chance against Android

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 652 ✭✭✭Blackdragon

Went from N70 (loved it) to N95 8gb (Amazing) to N97 (complete let down).

Counting the days to Payday so i can get the Desire (4 more days for those interested :))

Ha! This quite funny but interesting at the same time.
I went from android to windows and now going back to android.
Interesting to see how so much has changed in the mobile market in a (relatively) short space of time.
