The iPhone Dev team have their warning up not to upgrade today if you have your iPhone Jailbroken / Unlocked.

Thought I'd put it up in case anyone felt their finger twitch when they plug their phones in to iTunes ;)

I would imagine if they are release OS 3.1.3 today that OS 4.0 is way off, otherwise the updates in ths release could have waited as hardly critical...

This update for the iPhone and iPod touch contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:

    - Improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS
    - Resolves issue where third-party apps would not launch in some instances

I've been putting off the upgrade to 3.1.2 for ages. 3.1.3 now gives me the opportunity to enjoy blissful ignorance.

Don't fix it if it's not broken.

Can anyone with a factory unlocked iPhone check if this update enables tethering? Someone on macrumors forums posted that it does, but I updated to 3.1.3 on my factory unlocked and haven't got tethering. Jus want to check and see if that guy is talking crap!

Unless the DEV guys can come up with a way around future updates, I'll never be updating again, regardless of what Apple come up with in the future.

Someone mentioned OS4.0 above....does anyone know of any majors features\additions that are planned\rumoured to be on this upgrade? And when is it expected to be released?

    Are they planning a radio?

I think that although the Broadcom chip has some of the FM radio bits in it, they're not actually "powered up" correctly and it also has no aerial in any case. A lot of chip manufacturers use one base chip and just have to enable the different functionality levels. AMD do this with the Phenom tri-core processors - they're quad core processors with one of the cores dark. Same thing with some Intel lines as well.

The nano has no aerial either! If they could fit an FM radio in a watch in the 80's they can damn well fit one in an iPhone. :pac:
But yeah, the rumour is the hardware is there - just not 'enabled'.

Yes, I can confirm that tethering is enabled for factory unlocked phones after the upgrade to OS 3.1.3

Obviously do not upgrade to 3.1.3 if you wanna maintain your jailbreak and unlock .

    To quote GeoHot

"There is no solution for 3.1.3 on newer devices or 05.12.01 There is no untethered jailbreak. I don't know if/when these things will exist. "

Had in working in seconds. No need any more for mobileconfig files. Tethering is set up via a new pane in 'cellular data'.

My problem seems to be that im using a custom carrier bundle I made from this site:

    http://www.volkspost.info/ipcc_fw3/

Ive used this since last july and it works great, ive added a meteor logo and so on and it tidys up a few settings for making calls. I tried restoring my phone as a new iPhone and tethering worked but as soon as I applied my custom .ipcc tethering disappeared! I cant live without this carrier file so looks like no tethering for me for the moment! :(

Yes, it doesn't need the mobileconfig files any more.

    "settings for making calls"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 826 ✭✭✭dave oc

The carrier settings file does the following:
    -makes Voicemail call 171
-turns of the notice 'active diverts' before every call
    -enables group texting*
    -adds custom meteor logo
-and one or two other slight changes i think

    * there is a bug in texting: when a message is started and I add a contact, if I add another person it changes to an MMS even if there is no media attached. There is a setting in carrier files that disables this.

I use this for my data settings too, which I know can be input manually but it was handy to use this. The problem seems to be the iPhone sees my carrier file as unauthorized, and disables tethering.

Ok, see your point. But with the exception of the "diverts" message I have none of these problems. Whether I put a 3UK SIM in or a Vodafone IRL, voicemail adjusts accordingly. I have never had the issue you describe with SMS.

Just updated to 3.1.3 and do not see any change for tethering setup....does the phone have to be factory unlocked for it to appear?

    Yes, it appears so.

Tethering working perfectly for me.... No setting required just turn "on" the new control.

(factory unlocked phone on three.ie and sometimes SureCW)

i just had no choice but to update to this cos my phone crashed. bye bye jailbreak, you will probably be missed a little.

Ehh you could have just downloaded 3.1.2 and used redsn0w to jailbreak. Or downloaded a custom made ipsw and installed that.

I don't see the option after upgrading to 3.1.3 IPhone from IOS/Vodafone. I understood that it was unlocked but haven't confirmed that.

Did anybody else get it to work on IOS/Vodafone phone?

I have an IOS phone as well and I don't seem to have the tethering option either!
I thought that the IOS phones were all factory unlocked?

Yeah, I just put in an O2 sim card and it worked fine. It started up fine and loaded the youtube app.

So the IOS phones are unlocked but tethering is not showing up. Could Vodafone and O2 be blocking it? I tried on both providers but no tethering option appeared.

It appears that Vodafone Ireland is now recognized as an official carrier of the iphone, and they (Apple) have blocked user enabled tethering.

I tried to create a custom carrier file to enabled tethering ... but sim type 27201, which is vodafone ireland, is under the section MandatoryVerify ... which means it can't be overwritten by the user. (As far as I understand)

We'll have to wait for an official carrier bundle from Vodafone Ireland, and hope they enable tethering.

Thanks for that unnamed. That explains a few things. Where are you getting this information from?

    Mostly Google.

MandatoryVerify is in the "Unknown.bundle" which is the settings file used by the iPhone when there isn't a specific settings file for your carrier.

It has a list of carrier codes, and if your carrier is on that list you can't override those settings ... all official carriers appear to be on the list ... including Vodafone Ireland.

I presume you can still enable tethering if you jailbreak.

That's good to know. I spent a few hours searching the web when the 3.1.3 firmware was released but couldn't understand why unlocked IPhones worked on other networks but not on Vodafone. I'm not interested in Jailbreaking at the moment.

Please post here if you find out more.

Have a quick question: my friend bought a 3G iPhone off ebay. Its running 3.1.2 and is jailbroken. Theres a problem with the wifi, its grayed out and wont allow wifi to be used. Is he able to go to iTunes and restore the iPhone without it updating to 3.1.3? Or in other words if he clicks restore in iTunes will the iPhone restore itself to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3? Cheers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 623 ✭✭✭Shy_Dave!

Dave - My brother in America recently sent a Iphone (3g) back here as as gift to my father. He had updated to the 3.1.2 firmware and had jailbroken/unlocked it. However a problem appeared when we tried to use a vodafone sim in it, it wasn't finding the carrier. After turning the phone off/on we discovered the wireless was greyed out! If you look at the apple forums it appears to be a known problem in which the firmware/baseband version of the phone fecks the wireless up. We tried many ways of unlocking/jailbreaking/restoring the phone, eventually getting the Vodafone carrier working but never got wireless working again. If you still want to try restore the phone to 3.1.2 I would recommned trying to find the 3.1.2 firmware file on the net and (on a mac) press the Alt (option) button while clicking on restore in Itunes, this will let you choose the firmware file you've downloaded. Hope this helps.

Shy_dave, thanks for the response! So I just want to double check, if he tries to restore normally (without using a custom ispw) will iTunes update it to 3.1.3?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,763 ✭✭✭Jax Teller

iTunes won't let you restore to 3.1.2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 623 ✭✭✭Shy_Dave!

By clicking restore Itunes will restore the phone to the latest 3.1.3 firmware.

to downgrade to 3.1.2 and be able jailbreak again, you must of stored your phones shsh's with cydia server, if not your goosed for the mean time !
there are many posts explaining how to downgrade here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 623 ✭✭✭Shy_Dave!

The problem now Dave is not firmware/baseband/unlock/jailbreak related, it is what seems to be a hardware fault on the Iphone causing wifi to go.
It has occured on some Iphones after doing a firmware update.

    Look here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1141
Lots of people with the same problem, maybe you want to try some of the fixes they have suggested.

Any word of a hack to unlock 3.1.3?

I bought my 3GS quite a while ago, I think it was before week 39 or whatever that week was that they updated something on the actual phone. It's currently running BlackRain and 3.1.2 so I was just wondering if or when a hack will be released to unlock 3.1.3.

Ideally though, O2 will unlock the phones once they go on sale with Vodafone. Like they did in the UK. Although I never actually sent my form back to O2 when I bought the iPhone. It was a pre-pay one so I just set it up and got it working.

I bought a 3gs and never updated it.
currently version 3.0 (7A341). Is it worth updating it?

    Also I never use itunes.

Could I update to 3.1.2, unlock it, then save the state of the phone for backup?

    1 more question ...

Seen you have a jailbroken phone , do you have Cydia Installed ? , if so when you open Cydia does it say "This device has SHSH's on file for iPhone OS: 3.1,3.1.2" ..just above the Cydia Logo ?
