Talk about a bad year for movies! Very surprised at some of those nominations. Some of those movies are awful.

I would give my vote to Precious in Best Picture / Actress and Supporting Actress categories

My predictions are in bold. I've not seen any of the films in the Best Supporting Actress group.

I'd like to see A Serious Man get best picture because it's so damn good. The Hurt Locker is rightfully in there imo. Fantastic film and if you've not seen it then I'd highly recommend it.

Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon are both fantastic in Invictus and they truly deserve an award for their performances imo.

EDIT: Why is District 9 in best picture? It was good but it wasn't that good.

Really strange films up for nominations.

Nice to see The Hurt Locker in there.

Tarantino should not even get a mention imo. Dreadful movie and that p.o.s is up for 3 oscars ! unreal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭Nichololas

Out of the Best Movie list, I haven't seen The Blindside, An Education or Precious yet, but the only films out of the others I would even consider putting in is A Serious Man, Up and maybe Up In The Air.

It's not a great movie but it's fun and technically it's Tarantino's best work. The three nominations it has (Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Editing) are pretty appropriate - Christoph Waltz a likely winner anyone?

Also, does it seem to anyone else that the inclusion of Avatar, District 9 and Up is a deliberate movie by the Academy to counter the incredible amount of whining generated when neither The Dark Knight or Wall-E were nominated? Not that those movies don't deserve nominations (wait, Avatar?) or that this is necessarily a bad thing as it does make it more accessible, but I can't help feeling that taken as a whole the Best Films category looks rather lacklustre this year (again, Avatar wtftfwt?) ..

I really hope that Avatar doesn't win it - the likes of the Hurt Locker and A Serious Man were far more interesting. Other than that, can't say anything really jumps out - nothing particularly special in those nominations (Up is an interesting surprise nomination though - probably has no chance, but would be a far more deserving winner than some of the others).

OK.. what's with all the nominations for The Blind Side? I haven't seen it (so I won't judge) but it looks absolutely atrocious!

I reckon 'Up In The Air' will win Best Picture, although I wouldn't mind if 'The Hurt Locker' won it. Both were great.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Clooney walk away with the Best Actor gong.

Can't comment on Best Actress.. but I really don't want to see another cringey Monique for Best Supporting Actress.

Best Supporting Actor is a toss-up between Stanley Tucci and Christoph Waltz... both were superb!

I'm glad Up wasn't relegated to best animated (Although it is obviously a shoe-in) as it is definitely one of the best films of last year.

I think Up in the Air will probably get Best Picture, and Clooney best actor.

I hope Christoph Waltz gets best supporting actor, I watched Inglorious again the other day and he really is superb

He saved that film for me.

The Oscars? Haven't paid them any heed since Titanic won a boatload. fnarr fnarr.

Anyway it's all a popularity contest and doesn't focus on the actual work.
e.g. Russell Crowe wins every leading actor award before the oscars for "A Beautiful Mind", he's considered a shoe-in for the Oscar. He get's into a bit of bother at the Bafta's after's and Denzel wins in the end. Judge me by my work, not by my antics.

Saying that, I'll have to win

    AVATAR
    James Cameron
    Jeff Bridges
    Sandra Bullock
    Christopher Waltz
    and Monique

I'd agree he was the only thing worth watching in it. Re the oscars it's good to see In the Loop up for one.

Also it's nice to see Star Trek get a nod for the tremendous amount of work that went into the make up *clap clap*.

    Best Picture: A Serious Man
    Best Actor: George Clooney
    Best Actress: pass
    Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz
    Best Supporting Actress: Maggie Gyllenhall

This just reminded me, I had hoped that Moon would get a nomination, at least for Sam Rockwell.

    Such a pity it didn't.

    +1

An absolutely brilliant film and a brilliant performance from him.

Christoph Waltz was fantastic in Inglourious Basterds (which I really thought was a fantastic film). I really enjoyed his performance. I haven't seen many of the movies on the list but I have District 9 sitting beside me waiting to be watched. I really hope George Clooney doesn't win for no reason other than he annoys me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,857 ✭✭✭Valmont

I don't know why every year on this forum there is a big fuss about how bad the choices are for Best Picture compared to the good old days, whenever they were. I have only seen two of this years films; Inglourious Basterds and District 9 which were both fantastic. I think that some people have unrealistic expectations for films these days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭Nichololas

    Valmont wrote: »

Do you mean to say that modern films aren't as good as old ones? Or that people have unrealistic expectations for what should constitute a 'Best' Film Oscar nomination in that it's either an excellent film technically or a very popular one. Come to think of it, they should enlarge the category so they can have both, and pad out the rest with shallow tripe that tugs on the heartstrings, thereby appealing to a larger demographic and maybe reversing the downward trend of Oscar viewing figures and allowing everyone and their mother's film to have an {Oscar Nomination} sticker on the DVD. Everybody wins!

I feel like I just punched myself in the face with my tongue in my cheek with this post. :-)~

I hope District 9 gets it (though i doubt it will).
Avatar was great, but a sci-fi, so it probably won't get it.
    The Hurt Locker was rubbish
I wouldn't give it to QT on principal alone! :p
i greatly anticipate going to see Up in the air :)

Same as every year "none of those movies deserve a nom, wah wah wah" every year theres a bunch of "undeserved" movie that get nominated, look how many Chicago got ffs, and that was godawful, I'd love it Up won it, as Pixar as easily the best studio producing movies today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,108 ✭✭✭Lirange

I'm getting the impression that Jeff Bridges is favoured to win over Clooney. I haven't seen many of the films up for Oscars this year so it's hard for me to comment. I didn't think much of IB or Avatar. So I hope some of these other films deliver better when I eventually watch.

I'll give it a chance. I'm not going to judge off trailers. Bullock won the Golden Globe for her role in this and she's tipped to be a favourite for the Oscar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

This was the first year that nominations for Best Picture were expanded right? I'm very surprised by the list, but in a good way - District 9 was possibly my favourite film of last year, but there is no way in hell I expected to see it there. At a push I thought (hoped) that Sharlto Copely might get recognised for Best Actor. It won't win, but nice to see it there all the same. Glad that Christopher Waltz got the nod for Best Supporting Actor.

    My choices/predictions

    BEST PICTURE
    The Hurt Locker.

    BEST ACTOR
George Clooney, UP IN THE AIR

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
    Christoph Waltz, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

    BEST ACTRESS
Haven't seen any of the films listed.....

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Have only seen up in the air and tbh, while the performances were good they weren't spectacular..... it must have been a bad year for actresses!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

    My predictions

    Best Picture
    AVATAR

I think this a no-brainer, mainly on the fact that it creamed the box-office and broke records galore. The Hurt Locker and District 9 have unfair competition against this incredible looking but ultimately bland film. If not Avatar then The Hurt Locker for sure.

    BEST ACTOR

Haven't seen any of the these film's besides Renner in The Hurt Locker so I can't judge. Apparently Jeff Bridges and Clooney are tipped to scoop the oscar.

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
    Christoph Waltz, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

Maybe not but easily one of the best characters of 2009, it seems like your typical story too of an relatively obscure actor getting this oscar. I'm rooting for him as the only time I enjoyed that film was when he was on-screen.

    BEST ACTRESS
    Gabourey Sidibe, PRECIOUS

For the amount of months we've heard about this film I'd say she'll bag it.

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
    Maggie Gyllenhaal, CRAZY HEART

She's due one, one the few younger actresses that doesn't normally play to type.

I'm probably completely off but, hey, I've seen the academy do stranger things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,728 ✭✭✭fluke

    While we're doing predictions:

Best Picture: The Hurt Locker just ahead of Avatar

    Best Actor:Jeff Bridges by default

Best Actress: Most volatile category, but calling Bullock narrowly ahead of Streep

Best Supporting Actor: Why bother nominating anyone but Waltz?

Best Supporting Actress: Has to be Mo'Nique

I am going to look back at this and be incredibly embarrassed, aren't I?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭flazio

    I have only one prediction.
Up will get best animated :p
Seriously though, only the second ever animated film nominated in best picture is quite an achievement in itself and while I don't think it'll win (80:1 odds at paddypower) I do hope it gets at least 1 other award on the night.
I do reckon that Avatar will have a good night at the Oscars though, lets face it, it's the biggest crowd puller to turn up to the awards since Return of The King.

    This too shall pass.

That's never going to be a problem. The problem is what the Academy chooses to nominate. Whether the category is five or ten films you'll find an inexplicably sucky film in there just about every year (How Green is My Valley, for example). This year it's The Blindside and last year it was The Reader.

Life goes on. I'm mostly happy with the nominations, mainly because I've been slowly adjusting my point of view to see films the way the academy does, so I don't expect too many fun and enjoyable films to secure nominations if they don't serve the purpose of making upper class voters feel good about themselves (hence the recent fascination with poverty porn and the reason The Blindside secured a Best Picture nod) or aren't 'artsy' enough.

I never expect the Oscar nominees to sync up with my top ten films of the past year, and I don't think any reasonable person would.

Not that I've ever had any faith in the annual mutual appreciation society gathering, but the ommission of Moon for Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Actor, Director and Original Score, and the inclusion of Inglorious Basterds really just solidifies the fact that the Academy is a load of old tosh. Also, The Hurt Locker is no where near as good as some people make out. It was interesting, but ultimately forgettable. Also, the last shot of the film sucks any credibility out of everything that came before it.

The omission of Moon was in large part down to Sony's failings. They didn't make any push for it, because they feared that sending screeners to Academy voters would increase piracy of high-quality copies of the film, as it would have been just before the DVD release.

I'm surprised at all this hate for Inglourious Basterds. I love Moon (it made my top ten of the year), but it seems that the Irish are really split over the film. On the Irish Times, Donald Clark gave it a marmite ward as a 'love it or hate it' film, but it seems that - internationally - people love it (or are a lot more positive about it).

That's pretty lame from Sony. It's a great film, probably my favorite from last year but in fairness it would have never won up against some of those other more high profile films.

I do think however that Sam should be getting the nod for Best Actor. He was amazing in it.

Anyone know why Hurt Locker is there? overlooked last year how come it got a 2nd chance? it is from 2008 and won awards in 2008.

Seems odd they nominated it now, great movie imo just weird its not in the "season".
