What's the best choice I can make if I'm getting lunch in some newsagents like spar?

    Hi,

I've read a few similar questions posted lately but the answers all seem to be along the lines of "you can't really get healthy stuff in spar - better off making your own lunch at home".

So, I promise I really will try to make my own lunch at home from now on but for those times when I'm starvin marvin and I'm in a spar getting lunch, what's the healthiest choice I can make and how many calories would be in that choice?

I know I'm way better off making my own lunch at home but sometimes for whatever reason I end up skippin breakfast and by the time lunch comes around I'm ready to eat the whole shop. I know I shouldn't let that happen but the reality is that it does happen and probably will in the future. So what are my options in those situations? I'd be happy with something around the 800 kcal mark. I'm not a picky eater - I love me veg, salads fruit etc.

    Thanks! :)

firstly, it is 100% possible to get a good lunch / meal in a lot of delis, I find centra ones good and spar too.. it depends what you goals are to be honest.. try a whole grain sandwich with tuna, lettuce, tomato, onion etc etc. or if you are not eating bread just have chicken and a little of every salad you like ...

I agree with last poster - it is possible to get a healthy lunch in a deli. And especially if you are going to make ur own lunch 90% of the time, a treat now and again shouldnt be a problem. (for example on a Friday) Get a wrap or wholemeal bread with some lean meat like ham or chicken and loads of veg like lettuce, tomatoes, peppers etc. And when they ask buter or mayo only get a TINY bit of mayo, like literally a scrapping! If you cant trust them, buy a sachet of low fat mayo and put it on yourself. Avoid any sandwiche filling with sauces on like carnation chicken or egg mayo as they are full of calories. Also avoid cheese! its delicious but laden with calories (unless ur a vegetarian - in that case cheese is an important source of protein) Avoid prepacked salads such as pasta salads or salads with loads of mayo or sauces on them on them (i.e. ceasar salad) or loads of meat as they are laden with calories!! Pay attention to LABELS! I dont understand why people choose to ignore them. Often when u look at something u consider healthy it isnt, so read them. Steer clear of fizzy drinks and energy - they can be misleading! If you really need a fizzy hit try a diet one or fizzy water. And lastly, i cant figure out if you are male or female but if you are female in particular, 800 calories is far too many to be having for lunch time. If you are trying to loose weight or even if you are trying to maintain ur current weight, 800 calories is too many for lunch time unless this is your main meal of the day. Remember you only have 2000 (female) or 2500 (male) calories a day! And try not to avoid breakfast, you get so hungry you want to overeat and it oftens means you eat more than you would if you just ate two healthy meals! Hope this helps!!

Brown bread and no butter ,mayo, cheese or coleslaw and stick to real chicken (carved breast) or tuna with lots of veg.

Better still salad box with the same things in it.

My healthy deli sandwich (at least I think it's healthy - although I'm open to correction) is a wrap with turkey, stuffing, little cranberry sauce, tomato, onion and peppers. Yum!
