I've been browsing through various threads and many people have advised to not take protein shakes while trying to lose weight. Im just wondering what the reason is behind this?

Im currently losing weight and I am taking ON Gold Standard Whey because it's low in carbs and I find it works well. I've found it easy to keep losing while taking them after workouts, although I have fallen off the wagon once or twice but not down to the shakes.

All depends if you're making a calorie deficit and burning under your maintenance weight by working out so you can loose weight. Obviously you are as you're loosing weight but best to track it on fitday etc and see exactly how many calories you're consuming a day including the shakes.

Also depends what type of workouts you're doing I wouldn’t necessarily be taking two protein shakes everyday if I were just doing cardio. On a weight lifting day id consume one after my workout then again the next morning to feed my sore muscles, and if I were doing cardio that day i'd prob skip it.

Yes definitely helps me the next morning as I haven’t got time to make a huge breakfast containing all my protein and carb sources the next morning so I just throw in a scoop with my oatmeal and its a perfect breakfast. but you could also get your protien from food sources like eggs etc the next day so whatever you like.
also try and make your shakes with water so it contains the least calories.

Depends on your lifestyle really. If you are always in a rush then they are good because at least you get it in your diet. I use Matrix when trying to lean up, mix of slow and fast releasing proteins and once you have it with say a piece of fruit as a snack or some nuts it does the job as you should be eating regularly anyway. Having siad that if you have the time Id go with lean whole foods as they will satisfy you more.

Once you are still hitting your targetted deficit it doesn't matter how many shakes you take a day. Obviously solid meals are better. I have cut and maintained muscle mass while taking 1 scoop in the morning, 2 scoops after a workout (both in water) and 2 scoops before bed in low fat milk. I was strict on my diet so i could afford to use them for an extra protein source.
