Dead Forever

Sitting here in the office, I've had the same thought I have every now and again.

When we die, we are dead forever. Now I'm not a believer in the afterlife, fair play to those that are but I'm questioning the people in the same atheist boat as myself.

Do you not get scared at the thought of never being alive again, ever?

It's not like you're going to notice, being dead and all.
I'm not afraid of death, just of dying.

    ^ That.

But overall it's kind of a hard thing to comprehend. I try not to think about it, I just drive myself mad when I do.

As long as I'm not buried alive I think I'll be ok.

Nope, Not really afraid of it at all.
When I die I'll know the answer to one more question...

Were here for a good time not a long time.

I was actually more afraid of death when I had some semblance of faith than I am now. When I came to the decision that there really is nothing more beyond this, I found it quite liberating. I'd be more afraid of HOW I die than what doesn't happen after.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,595 ✭✭✭bonerm

I'm just afraid of wasting time. It's nice to think we'll live forever and achieve all our objectives, but the truth is we probably won't. Therefore you have to be very careful with your time and don't give it all way to people and things that don't deserve it.

The only ones who should be afraid of dying are the ones who wasted the time they were given.

death, no thanks. I plan to live forever

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,738 ✭✭✭Naos

I know it's very morbid, so apologies Anonoboy :P

I'd be like yourself so Liah, I think about it rarely but when I do it's a real 'realisation' moment, freak out inside for a minute or two then just ignore it.

Sitting at a desk doesn't help when you're thinking you could be doing something else bigger and better!

Just that thought, never being alive again, ever. For eternity - never seeing, hearing, tasting. Nothing. You're just gone. Never to be alive again. FOREVER!!

No you won't, you'll be dead. Therefore unable to know what happens after you die.

OP - just think of it as an eternal Sunday lie in. With the bonus of never having to get up on Monday early to go to work..ever again.

    Sounds good to me :D

And if you're dead infinity then sure the amount of time we spend alive will tend to zero.
Therefore. Ergo. Vis a vis. Concordantly.

I don't remember when I wasn't born so dead doesn't bother me much.

I do admit to being depressed to never being able to use a transporter or phaser gun :P

You should be more afraid of crap cliches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,378 ✭✭✭✭jimmycrackcorm

It's good news wither way - if there is an afterlife then you get to party on. If you simply are dead then you've no more worries any more and you'll only miss out on parties that you might not get to go to because the taxi never arrived.
    Win-Win either way.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,542 ✭✭✭Captain Darling

As Magnus already said, the fear of dying is worse then death itself.

When you're dead you're gone, the hard part is shuffling off this mortal coil.

I'd rather go with a bang, then in fcuking misery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I'm more afraid of the religions being true. I'll either burn for all eternity or have to go to boring heaven. Both heaven and hell sound pretty awful.

    Better wrong answers?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭opinion guy

    Does it really matter ?

Thats not a facetious answer. I mean is it really worth worrying about since you can't do anything about it anyway ? Perhaps I'm somewhat immune to this having various experiences that made me confront my mortality in one way or another at various levels of seriousness.
One thing I've learned over the years is that worrying about things you ahve no control over will ONLY make you unhappy

At least there's a certainty if you don't believe in the afterlife. You're finished. End of story.

I'd be more scared at the thought of an afterlife. What with all of that burning for an eternity in hell and all.

I'm scared of not being able to play with my gadgets anymore. I'm scared of not being able to have sex anymore. I'm scared of not being able to have crispy duck anymore.

    I'm hoping that by the time I'm 80 I won't care about i-pons anymore.

    You're already dead.

I'm not afraid of dying, but I certainly don't want to die, because I quite enjoy being alive ! So when the time comes, I'll probably have thoughts running through my mind about how much I'll miss my family and friends, whether I could have done more with my brief time here, what I could have done differently, wishing I could have another 80 years plz, etc.

Ultimately though, once my brain shuts down, all that sh*t will be goneski and I'll be brown bread.

Kinda depressing to think about like that, but I don't spend alot of time dwelling on it. I've still got alot of living to do, so I'm gonna concentrate on enjoying that.

Cheers but I was hoping for a mix of light hearted & serious answers, I like AH for this :)

As for the people saying when you're dead, you won't notice: I know that - that's not the concerning bit. It's the knowing that whilst alive.

I'm happy for these moments as well though, because although it can be terrifying if you think it over too much, a wave comes over you and you realise you're wasting time thinking about something that IS GOING TO HAPPEN, rather look back and think at least I didn't think too much about it and got on with the aul living, plenty of time for the dead bit.

Evidently, this years/seasons morbid thoughts are over, woo!

The only thing that bothers me about death is I won't know it and therefore can't go back to the religious guys and go "there..I told you so" :D
Of course being dead I cannot even tell myself that I was right :(

You know those great dreamless nights sleep you have from time to time? I think death will be like those but obviously you never wake up - its not so bad when you think about it really...

This is the only way i can get my head around my consciousness ceasing to be :)

Try eating something an hour before heading to bead! Lately ive had a bit of a grá for peanuts and whenever i eat some before hitting the sack i always seem to be able to remember my dreams the next day.

Be warned though - you may not like what you dream :D

Lately ive been dreaming about being in a post apocalyptic world (probably after watching The Road) - its not a comfortable way to spend your nights sleep!!

Doens't make any difference to me. Post-apocalyptic world ? u in Detroit maybe ?

In all seriousness thou - you might not be dead forever. If there is a Zombie scenario you will become undead. Who knows what level of consciousness that involves? Check out the Zombie forum for more info.
