What do you think would happen? Would the defence forces be mustered to join the Americans in Afghanistan/Iraq, would the Ministers create a law ten times more strict than the Offenses against the State act?
Would we sit on our arses doing nothing and remain neutral?

I was thinking about this today, and I reckon, Ireland wouldn't dare go looking for a fight past our borders. But you would definately see cameras and microphones on every street in the name of patriotism.

    What do you think?

    EDIT: I mispelled "Al Qaeda"

We'd copy UK law and adopt their policies but still stay a neutral country.

Id say the following would happen.

Irish Gov would condemn the attack without sounding threatening
World leaders would codemn the attack.
Irish gov would say they are discussing the matter and the actions of a result of it with their UN counterparts.
Opposition will claim the government isnt doing enough
Media will be ripe with stories.
After the shock of the attack, the public will moan about the handling of the matter but thats about as far as it will go.
In a few years time, a tribunal is held to find out why the whole thing was handled badly.
    Solicitors get rich.
    FF get re-elected

Civil liberties would be massively eroded and unconstitutional draconian laws would be drafted in, and never repealed, but there would be minor incidents every now and again to keep them in place.

You fight terrorism by maintaining your freedoms and by not succumbing to "terror".

Every time a police officer abuses the section 44 stop and search terror laws in the UK against protesters, photographers and the likes, or a child is suspended for making a motion sensor as a science project in the US, we lose freedom, and Al Queda laugh their holes off.

The biggest threat to society is terror legislation, not a few backwards donkeys in caves.

Yep. Al Quaeda just the latest in a long list of bogey men used to subjugate an unthinking / unquestioning society.

    Just add the following:
Media find evidence that the government knew that the bombing was going to happen. After much opposition bluster, nothing happens.
Barry Egan writes many column inches in the Sindo about how various Irish celebrities are coping with life after the bombing in their nightclub of choice.
John Gormley denies that he's responsible for bombs in any way.
Lisa Murphy states that even after the bombing, she's still over Michael Flatley.

We are not enemy's of Islam and leave the middle east to do its thing. They have no reason to bomb us.

Great thing about having a underfunded army is we wont send them to fight with anyone.

Hypothetically, lets hope it's at the Dail whilst it's in full session and with full attendance.

Seriously though, there would be a tribunal setup which would cost a few hundren million and no benefit would have been gained at the end of it.

Well, the Catholic Church was allowed to rape and abuse children in this country for decades and the State did very little to prevent it. When it all came out, an inquiry was setup and delivered it's results. It cost the state millions and the Priests still retain direct control over schools and the education of children in this country...

So... if Al'Qaeda were to attack Ireland, you can pretty much assume the same course of action in response.

One possibility would be for dissident republicans to look to capitalise on it - maybe level a mosque or two? You would definitely see an unprecedented (possibly permanent) spike in anti-islamic sentiment. As a result you might even see muslims take to the streets proclaiming their rejection of islamic terrorists.

I don't see the point of your rolleyes post.

The OP never suggested that a bomb has never exploded in Dublin. He merely wants people's opinions as to what they think would happen if Al Queda bombed Dublin.

    Totally different scenario.

People really need to learn to read posts properly and how to use rolleyes in the correct manner. My head hurts from reading imbecilic posts.

    * Noel Dempsey would go on another holiday to top of his tan.

    * With everyone now being scared $hitless, the Greens would bring in a carbon tax on personal $hit.

    * Cowen would continue to look and act clueless.

    * Individual Gardai would be issued with personal speed cameras to 'nab' us all in the midst of the national panic.

    * Harney would have a C130 transport plane fly in a 2 weeks supply of food for herself!

    * Dublin City council would deploy emergency gritters onto the capitals streets.

    * The Banks will raise interest rates and give a €1 billion Euro interest free loan to one of the 'scum' developers to 'repair' the bomb damaged street.

    * The 'Scum' developer will receive a €1 billion Euro loan from EACH of the big banks.

    * The Army's Ordnance and Bomb disposal unit will be disbanded by Willie O'Dea because they might be seen as a provocation.

    * RTE will replace the actors in the Angelus, with Al Qaeda and Jihadist types.

    * FAS will start free night classes for wannabe suicide bombers.

*The department of Social Welfare will pay all participants of this course a bonus week, every week. Because it could be their last!

and so on and so forth......

Different things would happen depending on where the bomb was set off. At the moment I would think the most likely venue for an attack would be on the Luas which at present is insecure to the point of hopping on free last I heard.

Anyone who looks foreign, especially with darker skin, will be beeped at, verbally abused, things thrown at, threatened, beaten up and/or worse, depending on the place and time of the day, and it doesn't matter where they are from and what they do or what their religious views are.

    we would stay neutral

we would do everything we could to not commit to any war effort because we simply cant afford it

we would rely on britain and america to do the dirty work for us and they probably would

Happened in 1974. So, going on that we can say that the gardai would conduct a half hearted investigation that will go nowhere, and the govt would then spend the next 20 ignoring the victims families demands that justice be done.

Someone would post about it in AH, a number of people from outside the pale would whine that AH is not the Dublin forum and finally a mod would move it just after someone posted yore ma thus making the thread look really weird.

At the same time humanities would be hotly debating the... humanity of it all while commuting and transport would be discussing how the whole public transport infrastructure went to crap, all things retro would be talking about 1974 and someone in conspiracy theories would claim that it was all David Icke's fault.

20 minutes later the first piece of debris would appear on adverts.

    Another day on boards :)

Why would it only kill dozens?

That seems like laziness. Sure they'll kill tons of Americans, attepmt to kill hundreds of English folks, but us? We get a half hearted attack. Probably sent via an post, 2 days late.

What would we do? I dunno, if nobody you know was killed & your route to work wasn't affected...probably very little bar a national day of mourning
