why are some lighthouses painted white, white with black bands or granite? is there navigational meaning to these variations?

is it so they stand out amongst the the landscape, and to distinguish them from the sky? is there any rules underlining this colouring decision?

    thanks

Every lighthouse is painted differently to distinguish them from each other. They also have unique flashing patterns that tell them apart at night.
    Hope that helps,
