Where's the food and beer? Some party... :p

Okay, just so everyone knows this event is starting 1pm EST. That's 6pm our time.

A good roundup of the rumours here.

What's the deal with a video stream for this? Are they easy to find or is it best to rely on text updates?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Norderburse

Apple don't usually stream video from these events, but it'll be on iTunes a couple of days after. Engadget, Gizmodo and all the usual suspects will have live text updates though.

I don't belive the tablet is the Newest Creation, I even doubt it's existance outside r&d..it's unconfirmed design does not make any sense, without a stand, keyboard and mouse

    My predictions,

the first apple cloud, osx online http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/08/apple-cloud/

    the first touch screen mac

launch of iphone mini & iphone pro, video calls for the iphone

Been looking forward to this for so so long.

    Don't know what it is.
    What it does.
    What it looks like.
    How much it costs.
    If it even exists.

    But I want one.

Can't believe this hasn't been posted here yet.

McGraw-Hill CEO Confirms Apple Tablet Is Coming Tomorrow
“Yeah, Very exciting. Yes, they’ll make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while. And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable. So what you are going to be able to do now is we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95% of all our materials that are in e-book format on that one. So now with the tablet you’re going to open up the higher education market, the professional market. The tablet is going to be just really terrific.”

Controlled leak or slip-up? :pac: /me waits for conspiracy theorists to show up

Engadget have released supposed shots of the tablet.

    Here

Looks good. Home button ala iPhone, not too surprising. It feels like Christmas - can't wait!! :)

I'm actually more hoping they update the macbook pro line... me wants a new laptop!!

Ooooh its out today, how exciting :D 100 bonus points to the first person who posts actual real links, images and info.

I'm excited about the (rumoured) tablet, though I don't see myself getting one for a good while at least it'll be interesting to see what it's all about.

Also hoping for iPhone 4.0 OS. And maybe some info about the iPhone 4G but that's probably too optimistic of me.

Oh do you think they are going to be announcing lots of things? I was only expecting the iSlate... New Iphone OS would be nice alright

I've only just got my first macbook - and i think the iSlate will be expensive so can't see myself making a purchase any time soon. Can't wait to play with it in store though

I just walked down past Yerba Buena about 1 hour ago. Plenty of AV trucks and security. looks like as big an event as the initial iPhone release party in 2007. The jPad is almost here....

If the iTablet/iSlate (please God, not the iPad  - horrible, horrible name...) shares more in line with the iPhone, it's likely we'll see iPhone OS 4.0, which will most likely scale to the tablet as well (and there have been such rumors already).

Depending on what the rumored tablet most likely resembles OS-wise (full Mac OS X or iPhone OS), we may see announcements of upgrades to the existing products that are relevant (so, if the tablet is more of an iPhone, I wouldn't expect to see anything at all about the MacBook Pro line at this event).

Then again, there could still be no tablet at all and anything goes :).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭merkuree

Interesting article. Not sure if the stats for games strengthens the case that the jPad will be a games platform or that games are just a good way to test all of the components under load and discover bugs. It is interesting.

Maybe there will be a lower end consumer jpad and a higher end business jpad?

I have heard talk of a new iTunes, be it 10, or 9.whatever, to facilitate the slate and all the new media (newspapers, books etc) that it can utilise.

I can't see the MBPs getting a redesign yet. Most likely just a refresh. Which might not be worthy of an announcement at this event. But maybe as part of the warm-up.

I'd say that hinges very particularly on the news yesterday that Apple may not have secured rights to sell TV shows at 99c per episode or subscription-based services

I'm more interested in a MBP refresh than anything else. The iTablet just seems like a larger iPhone that you can read newspapers on? I can't see the appeal. But then again Mr. Jobs will probably make me want it somehow.

I'm in the market for an ereader anyway so this could solve my problems of not liking any (that are available in the EU). I also want a computer I can use while sitting back on a sofa. My Macbook Pro still kind of feels too big and work-ish to realistically use in such a manner.

Yep, just looks like a novelty, over-sized iPhone. The e-reader thing may be it's saving grace but that will depend very much on price - anything above €600 would put it out of the reach of the mainstream and would see it go head-to-head with more functional laptops.

looking forward to hearing the news later on, my guess is:

    - Apple will only announce one new product, they rarely ever announce two new things as they want the lime light on the one product.

    - If there is a Slate/Tablet/Pad, it will be focused on the educational sector. There may be an evolution of the iTunesU, giving some extended educational purpose for iTunes. The tablet will be geared to academic book downloads, uploads to institutions and generally academia.

    - The OS will be based on the iPhone, but extended, not just an upgrade of the iPhone OS.

    - iPhone 4.0 OS, could be announced, but not released, mainly to offset the impending competition from Android.

    - There may be an update to iTunes, but this is unlikely at the moment.

Despite what most mac fans (myself included) are now thinking, the Tablet will not be a must have accessory, it will be geared towards to a specific use - eBooks, eSchoolBooks etc.

Im not convinced on any form of tablet offering a wow factor. People dont like to read of backlit screens utimately. how often do you open a large doc on your computer or laptop only to print it cos its easier on the eye to read?

Yeah, that's the killer issue for me. And given that Apple will undoubtedly want you to be able to watch iTunes videos on it, I can't see it sporting a Kindle-like screen. I've no interest in reading a newspaper or book off a glossy screen.

Interesting Mr Professor,as someone who post regulary in Investments and Markets we are all talking about the Death of Print Media. I cant remember the last time i bought a newspaper/mag, i read them on my iphone or imac.

Anyway i called steve last night gave him my credit card details and told him to bang me off one of those new tablets when he gets a chance:D:D

I suppose you all heard of one of the CEOs of one of the largest publishing houses last night on cnbc basically telling everyone what was being launched today and how they have been getting their publications ready for the new apple tablet computer, im sure steve was thrilled!!

I'm looking forward to the iTablet.

Don't need another MB / MBP (have a Dell Hybrid running Windows 7, a Mac Mini running Tiger, a MacBook running Tiger and my NC10 running Leopard - Hackintosh).

My sig gives my thoughts on the iTablet price... if it's $750 or under, I'll buy it when I'm in Miami during the Summer!

There's almost certainly an update to the iPhone OS -- if you go to http://developer.apple.com/iphone/ you get redirected to a "we'll be back soon" error page.

UPDATE - it's back now, and unchanged; so perhaps this was unrelated.

Nah, I find watching it "live" and commenting here can be pretty funny, especially when the truth doesn't even come close to the hype and we all start b*tching and moaning about things :D.

I'll be on here commenting when the Apple Event starts, but have to leave again about 6.45pm. It should be largely done by then..!

But in saying that, I bet the Apple Tablet will be announced last in a "one more thing.." declaration.

Not a chance! Jobs will just have finished going through all the sales figures for macs, ipods and iphones. He'll just be starting to touch on hardware revisions or, if you're lucky, iPhone OS 4.0 by 18.45! :)

There is so much hype about this, I'd be very amused if nothing actually happened.

That said, I am so online for the liveblogging. I probably won't end by buying it yet (a Macbook and IPod touch has served me fine thus far) but I'm fascinated to see what it might be, especially with the talk of a 'surprising user interface'. But if it is a low-tech, IPhone Phat, I'll be a small bit disappointed.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,781 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

Actually I'd be happy if it was not a fully fleged macbook in tablet form, but more of a ipod on steroids - if it was very reasonably priced

Price will be a concern, and I do suppose it will be trying to be a bridge between an IPod and a MacBook. I'm just a bit wary about how useful it will be - my Ipod is perfect for music / internet portability, and my Macbook is perfect for general computing stuff. When do I need something in between (of course, when it comes to Apple, you don't really need anything :pac:)? Again, I'm still extremely curious to what will be announced in a few hours, but am just concerned that it will either be a bigger / smaller version of something many people already have. Hopefully it won't be!

Was thinking about it but last year's wait was around 7-8 hours. Too long to risk it IMO. Macrumors does have a link directly to the video to avoid even having to log onto Apple's site to see the keynote in case there are spoilers on the front page.
