    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    This makes me sick
A 16-year-old girl who was raped in Bangladesh has been given 101 lashes for conceiving during the assault.

The girl's father was also fined and warned the family would be branded outcasts from their village if he did not pay.

According to human rights activists, the girl, who was quickly married after the attack, was divorced weeks later after medical tests revealed she was pregnant.

The girl was raped by a 20-year-old villager in Brahmanbaria district in April last year.

Bangladesh's Daily Star newspaper reported that she was so ashamed following the attack that she did not lodge a complaint.

Her rape emerged after her pregnancy test and Muslim elders in the village issued a fatwa insisting that the girl be kept in isolation until her family agreed to corporal punishment.

Her rapist was pardoned by the elders.

Sick sick stuff! But how did she survive 101 lashes? Was Jesus not subject to 40 and another one would have killed him.

Suppose you shouldn't believe everything you read or hear.. Bible included

The Listowel thing isn't really the same at all.. the rapist was sent to jail, and the victim wasn't punished by law.. just humiliated by idiots

The irish version of the story would read something like this:

Man sentenced to 101 lashes after a woman accuses him of sexual harassment/rape. Turns out the guy simply said hello to her on the bus.

Maybe they use a smaller whip for women?

Maybe how they whip has changed in the last two thousand years?
Pretty sure Jesus was whipped with a whip with hooks for flesh.

It just doesn't surprise me that the people in this case are Muslim..

I didn't say the cases accorded exactly,I said there were similarities.
Whereby the male population deemed the female party to be the guilty one. The same medieval ,patriarchal thought-processes apply in both cases. Religion doesn't apply. (religion has just happens to have been hijacked by those very same thought processes)

So if there's a couple of murders in Ireland do you brand all Irish murderers just because the last one was the Irish too? I bet you don't have a clue about the Muslim culture. The different sections of the faith etc? Some extremists do exist, much in the way that the IRA and similar are around. Just because something is different or you don't understand it, there's no need to mock it.

I'm not looking to hijack the thread or get into an arguement over this, but it just p1sses me off when I see people saying, sure what do you expect, they're Muslims, or anything along those lines.

    To sum up:

TOTAL unfairness in the case of the 16 year old.
(still in a country that is only showing itself up for the idiots that have allowed this to happen)

And as for Listowel, unfairness to in the treatment of the victim.
She too should not/still be not treated as "asking" for what happened and thus held not responsible (by some, coincidently - supporters of the culprit!).

Whats common in both cases is that to varying degrees, unfairness is disgustingly forced upon the victim, where as the culprit is overlooked and by some excused - again each case to varying degrees.

    Nuff' said. Moving on...

They won't ask for aid. We will embrace them in the name of political correctness to slowly turn country by country into Muslim States of Europe. And when you want to organise Christmas in your child's school, you will upset them and in the name of the same political correctness you will be ordered to take the cross off the wall and be fined for being "racist" and "xenophobic". It has already started in UK.

I don't think anyone is denying that parallels between the two cases can be drawn, rather, they see a such a gigantic chasm between 50 people shaking hands with a man guilty of sexual assault, and the lashing of the rape victim 101 times, that they feel any such comparison is misleading, sensationalist, and unnecessary.

incorrect the vast majority of the male population here in ireland would deem that behaviour completely unacceptable and disgusting.

that behaviour in bangladesh is the done thing over there and they are fine with it.

    miniscule similiarities if any

Absolutely. However what each case shares (again, to varying degree) in the willingness by others to forgo decency and replace it with stupidity.

Much in the same way as (previously mentioned) we wouldn't like to be branded paedophiles due to the acts of some priests etc. As you see from the story, it's the elders that let the rapist pr1ck go and ordered the girl be lashed (please no jokes - too soon!).

More like: Woman recieves 101 questions on her sex life after claiming she was raped then it was decided she was too sexually promiscuous to be raped and it was probably her fault anyway.

The example case cited above just honestly further convinces me yet again why church (religion) and state should always be kept separate.

Ok but the question here is would the same thing occur in other countries with a different majority religion? I think not.

The Muslim religion in general does not hold women in the same regard as they do men and so this invariably leads to what has happened to this girl. No one is saying that this is how all Muslims think or believe, but they all hold a similar thinking regarding women,be it on the extreme level as above or the progressive Muslim (who still dont treat women as totally equal).

Are you seriously comparing Ireland with Bangladesh?

If a man had raped a women in Ireland in 1996 do you think he would have got away with it and the women received 101 lashes?

My old job had me reporting in many Muslim countires and the treatment of women can sometimes be barberic.

i have been unlucky to witness some very disturbing situations happen to females young and old. its part of life over in some these countires for women to be put to the lions den for bringing shame to families.

but people who compare this to cathiolics is way off the mark. im sorry but until you have seen a woman getting lashed, stoned or hung for being victim in ireland or in christian country its then we can compare.

You're correct to point out how not every single thing in Bangladesh is the same as here in Ireland. That's very astute of you.
You made a remark about how women are treated in Muslim society and I pointed out how we had parallels in our recent past here in Ireland.

If I was asked to guess what religion the people were in this case, I'd guess Muslim..

Not because I believe all Muslims are bad, just because I'd expect it to be that religion in which it happens most often

From rereading the story, we have only her word that she was raped.

Could be two young people got freaky, she hastily got married a short time later (read: pregnant), was divorced because the man who married realised it wasn't his, then tried to claim she was raped to avoid punishment (AFAIR, if you can prove rape you aren't punished).
