Magpul G&P M4 MOE REVIEW

Just picked up one of these beautys from Hobby Airsoft, said to myself it deserves a review.

Start first with the box, just a plain jane brown cardboard, but whats inside is hinted at with the little holographic logo and the Magpul PTS across the front.
I went for the Foilage Green, its a nice mix, and it aint tan. It shows off the genuine Magpul furniture very nicely.

Comes out of the box firing at a nice steady 320-322. The one think I love is its sound, The gearbox is just so defined a single shot is just a sharp thud, on full auto ( which i will get back to later) you can hear the gearbox reset after each burst. You just know thats it quality inside.

What you get in this package is just lurvly, All real Magpul Gear. Pts rear sliding stock, MOE Front hand guard, MBUS rear sight, Moe Pistol grip. Also there is a full metal body, with Magpul logo.

I took this out in G-Tac yesterday, and my god did it sing. Range and acuracy are all top notch. It out ranged most there by about 30 Feet. They only AEG that i couldnt out range was Systema. And this was with a stock barrel and hop up. Rate of fire is just insane, on a 9.6 it compares to my TM P90 running 11V Li-Po.

The Guys and Gal at Hobby Airsoft are top notch, I have being annoying them about one these for months. You wont find better service anywhere else

Overall i dont think there is a better AEG on the market today, i have some high end gear, VFC Scar, a few TM's G&G's. None of them can hold a candle to this.

I will get pictures up tonight hopefully.

    Finally got mine last week.

Pics can be seen here.Bottom of page.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055065511&page=49

    It's all DE.
Have to say that I'm with knifey on this. The sound out of it is excellent. I had a couple of people come up to me on Saturday in Drogheda talking about it.
Rate of fire is excellent and the range is unreal out of the box.
Can't wait to fit the Guarder to see how it improves.

Solid gun but I'm not mad on the MAGPUL PTS MOE Stock. It just doesn't fit as nicely as my Crane stock on my other M4. Maybe that's jsut coz I'm used to it.
Going to fit a MAGPUL PTS UBR Stock as I think it's more solid.

All in all I highly recommend this gun.:D

Going to get one of these next week..so did you install the guarder in it? did it make any differnece?

the new hop up (gaurder) makes a decent enough differance on an already impressive gun.

should have my one by Wed...
One question..the battery? it goes in the stock tube which is up by the front sight?
And it can take a 9.6v nimh battery?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,066 ✭✭✭Washington Irving

It goes in the handguard AFAIK.
    It'll take a 9.6v mini, I think

EDIT: This is my 666 evil, evil post :p

The battery goes in the handguard - simply remove the bottom half of the moe handguard and stick it in. It'll take either a 9.6v mini or a 9.6v nunchuck - but the mini is a better fit.

    Tony at eirsoft.ie

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055122309&page=638

Ordered the foliage green one as the other one was out of stock for another 2 weeks or so at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

Just received my one today...no really chance to test it out yet. Fantastic looking piece of kit..got the foliage green one as well :)
Be aware that G&P now put the battery in the stock not the hand guard anymore.
Bit of a pain as I'd batteries which fitted no problems in the hand guard which won't fit in the stock.
I'll post back on what batteries are suitable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,397 ✭✭✭MerryDespot

    Hey Berkut,

First off - what type of stock is on it? If it's the same as the photos above then I reckon you'd have room for a lipo (maybe) and not a lot else.

Second - can you remove the handguard? If you can there's no reason why you can't have the aeg wired to the front instead of the rear so that you can fit the battery in the handguard. That would make battery choice and life much easier. More space and less hassle.

As I recall the wire fitting through the delta ring (to wire the front) is tight but will fit the wires.

thanks mate...up until recently these were wired to the handguard. the manual even still tells me to put the battery into the handguard section.. I can even see the pathway underneath the barrell into the handguard for the wire to go through..
I don't want to go screwing with it as I'm one of these people who shouldn't take things apart :)
I'll see what batteries I can get going on it.

I'd say it's worth the extra cash to get it re-wired. Easier for you in the long run, and cheaper as you have the batteries. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, then I'm sure any of the retailers will sort you out:)

sounds like a plan..I'll talk to Tony from Midwest as he'll be at LAC at the weekend.

Also could you run a 9.6v on this? Anyone doing it already with their one.
I notice that the site says upto 9.6v..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,397 ✭✭✭MerryDespot

You will get a 9.6v mini in the handguard - this is what I use. Gives very good rate of fire and it's easily managed by the gearbox. This is the way to go.

Here's another option but no foliage green colour. PTS stock with a cheek rest that holds a 9.6 battery.. $142 dollars though

Dude, to each their own - but for me it'd be easier to simply ask one of the retailers or techs out there to simply re-wire to the front (probably for small fee) than to shell out for a stock from the US that will end up costing you more (after shipping and VAT charged at arrival here).

    that's what I'm doing actually :)
I'm meeting Tony from midwestairsoft at LAC on Sunday and we'll go through what batteries are suitable. If I'm not happy with any of them his tech will re-wire it for me :D

Anyone know if this battery connector is compatible with my M4?

    http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/bb-battery/batteries/lithium-batteries/gandp-ep-power-7-4v-1200mah-20c-lithium-battery-tamiya-plug.html

It has a tamiya connector but do we use a mini version here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,305 ✭✭✭Airsofter101

Wouldn't really use a Li-Po, but yes that should fit your MAGPUL M4.
I would recommend the Firefox 9.6V 1500mAh Mini Type Battery
    http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/bb-battery/batteries/9-6v-batteries/firefox-9-6v-1500mah-mini-type-battery.html
They give me an outstanding ROF and last for a half day of Airsoft nd Iam not easy on the trigger :D

    Hope this helped,

    Ronan

Is the connector in the stock or in the handguard?

Either way that LiPo would fit it and give a rof about equivalent to a 9.6v mini or maybe a bit less, not too sure but make sure to get a good LiPo charger as they can be volatile if mistreated:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,397 ✭✭✭MerryDespot

Dude, I wouldn't be too concerned about the size of the connection - you'll easily pick up a mini to large convertor in any of the airsoft shops. I'd be more concerned about where you're putting your battery - did you get it rewired to the front or is it still in the stock?
To each there own mate, but I think you're making life much more difficult for yourself by keeping it wired to the stock - limits you to a stock tube lipo really - front wiring makes life much easier and gives you a much better list of options for batteries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

thanks guys...I ended up going the lipo route altogether and didn't bother getting it re-wired... someone mentioned that he hated the battery in the handguard due to imbalance and I'm inclined to agree..bloody front is heavy enough as it..

Anyone get the Magpul MS2 sling and adapter for the M4?
Every review I've read rates it very highly and according to a lot of them it's far more comfortable than the real steel version and only 2/3 of the price :)

Yeah I have it on mine.

The sling can be very handy for switching from single point to double.
So you can just throw the gun behind you and switch to secondary.
Also comes in handy for switching from RHS to LHS depending on where you're cover is.

All in all I highly recommend it.

    Now go get one :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

is the adapter compatible with any M4?
Also..how the frak does it go on the rifle? do I need to remove the stock?
can't really see from the pics :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 733 ✭✭✭thehorse

i bought one of these a few weeks ago and it was a nightmare. The AEG broek after 1 hr of use on the first day i used it.

I sent the gun back and got a replacement which seems to be fine for the moment.
I wouldnt say the range is 'unreal' but its a little better that other aegs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

what's the barrel length in these?
ehobby state 240mm which definitely seems wrong to me while other sites say 304mm...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 304 ✭✭Solid Snake

Scarecrow:Yeah you'll need to remove the stock and stock tube.

Handy enough. Take it into a dealer and get it done for you if you don't have the tools.

I wouldn't say the adapter is compatible with all M4s, I got the mount for the Tokyo Marui version and it fit perfectly, I know they had another one for other models. Will try and measure the barrel when I get home but I'd say it's standard for an M4.

TheHorse: Dude you must have had a dud by the sounds of it. Did you get it downgraded here? I've had lots of people come up asking about it as it had great range. Hope it works out for you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

I'm the same..not that impressed with the range either..
I compared it to my JG36C and on semi both are firing around the same distance.
On auto it beats it by about 10-20feet..

Was using a hot power 7.4lipo but the rating was only 12c..
Before deciding to rewire it I ordered the G&P 7.4lipo off ehobby which has a discharge of 20c...
Great call on my part :D firing rate is slightly above a 9.6nimh so really very happy with it now...no need to re-wire..
link below in case anyone was wondering which battery it was..

Yep they are....both have the same motor, gearbox etc...the only real difference is the magpul gear..

Here's a good review on the defender

Anybody upgraded the barrel on this?
Thinking of putting in either a precision/twist barrel and I'm looking at the TK 256mm one.

    http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwolf/airsoft/Accessories_Precision_Barrels_AEG_AEP_Tanio_Koba_Hop_Twist_Barrel_for_Marui_P90_256mm.htm

And I've also noticed that on ehobby it says 11.1 lipo is supported...is the gearbox upto that :)

Also I'd appreciate if someone who has upgraded theirs might list them so I can do that same :)

these have the m120 motor right? With a 9.6V nimh the ROF is insane anyway id say a 11v lipo would be ridiculous. I would not risk it in my G&P.

    Sc@recrow wrote: »

I'm afraid not, my one was shooting at 1300 rpm out of the box on a 9.6v and 1100rpm on an 8.4v so I mostly played with a 8.4v after maybe 8000 rds the gearbox sh1t itself and has been a hassel ever since. I'm replacing the gearbox today with a brand new vfc one,,,,,,,,

I've also replaced the inner barrel with a mad bull python one and changed the hop up rubber with a gaurder clear, with good results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

anyone have any good links on changing the hop up.
I've seen a few youtube videos for changing an M4 but noticed that my pins are in different places...don't really want to go at this unless I'm really sure I know what I'm doing..
I've a guarder clear that I'd like to put into this..and maybe throw in a h-nub as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

got Deburca to put in a guarder hopup and it makes a nice improvement.
Next up is the Tania Kobia twist barrel.
As I've a silencer on the M4 I can put in a 459mm TK barrel which gives me about 2-3cms clearance inside the silencer...I'll let you know the results as soon as I do..apparently the TK barrels are a huge boost in accuracy and distance for AEGs etc under 330fps so I'm looking forward to seeing the results.
