Are you a useful asset to society?

I was thinking about this recently, and how contributions we make to the community and society at large can be positive (paying taxes, charitable services, being responsible adults) or negative (destroying public property, harming the environment, wasting public money and engaging in violent behaviour).
I'm just wondering what you think your net worth is? Are you a net contributor or a net benefactor? Are you in the red or in the black?

Personally, I think I'm in the red. My job doesn't help anybody directly, my employer cooks the books so I don't know what kind of tax I'm really paying, I peed in the street when I was really drunk last night, and I don't do anything for charity whatsoever.

I didn't even give any money to Haiti.

I like to think I am, as I am a frontline health service worker who likes to work like a Trojan and take negligible sick leave - and pay my taxes. But I am a public service worker, and considered a drain on society so that cancels that out...

Sorry but you chose your career. You wont get any sympathy from me.

Tens of thousands of people have died in Haiti in the past two weeks, nobody cares about your sick leave.

Jumping the gun a bit there - Kelle's point was that even though she is doing a job which is of value to society (I think Kelle is a nurse, therefore I would agree with her) the mere fact she is a public sector worker puts her, in the eyes of many, in the "not a valuable asset to society" category.

I don't care about society, I am here for myself...

There are billions of people in the world who would give anything they could to be in position you're in and yet you are still apathetic and cynical. :(

I am a Masters students so I think I have less then a regular student money wise, but I always try and give a few cents. I am not an asset in monetary terms but....
I give blood, I always try and smile and be polite when out about, I would like to think I am a good friend and supportive to those in my life,so in that sense I think I am an asset.

I was going for perspective dudess. She was employing an element of self deprecation by quoting general heresay. By extension undervaluing her role in life. However, she is clearly an important part of society. Her use of the word consider is a weak word. Fluff at best. Surely people are allowed a measured response to a poor argument?

Where did I say you weren't? And by that token, am I not allowed respond to your posts?

I don't know anything about your history here (apart from what's in your sig - makes no odds to me though).

I'm just at a loss as to why you rather self-righteously brought up Haiti, that's all. By that logic, people should be clamped down on for saying anything negative about their lives, because others are suffering far more.

Your positives: I pay taxes on the little that I'm paid; I partake in charity work (albeit not as much as I used to at all); ... responsible adult? Ummm... nah not so much!

Your negatives: I don't make a habit of destroying public property; I mightn't have a massive negative effect on the environment myself but at the same time I could do a lot better; I don't waste any public money to the best of my knowledge; and I definitely don't engage in violent behaviour!

    Do I pass? :D

Well on one hand I pay my taxes but on the other hand I consider my current job to be a total waste of public money and am happily drawing a paycheque from it for as long as I can.

BTW, I peed on Ayers rock if that makes you feel any better. Aboriginals shouldn't have left all those signs around saying respect their stupid cave-gods. Hmm, I guess that puts me in the negative now......

I'd consider yourself a possible investment to our future. How that investment pans out remains to be seen. :)

In answer to the question. I try to be an asset, firstly to my children/wife, then to our nation and its people, in that order.

Im an asset in so far as I pay a small amount of tax on my small income, I pay VAT on all purchases, and pay a ridiculous amount of motor tax for the pleasure of driving an old shít box with a big engine. I dont make a nuissance of myself in society, dont engage in public disorder or generally behave in a manner with could be construed as unlawful!
I dont do any community work or give out to charidee though. :( Tbh, I cant be arsed. Ill be dead an eternity, might as well concentrate on meself!

redundancy has left me with no job for 1 year now. After 15 years as a tax payer... despite daily effort to get back to work. I can only look forward to the 200 euro dole every week. depression setting in . big time:(

Just for the record i would not consider anyone out of work useless. If you are a lazy pce of sh1t ok but there is a massive amount of people out of work through no faut of there own.

If you do find yourself in that position consider vol work to fill the void. It can make you a part of something and the reward is usually the result.

I was recently made redundant and it is NOT a nice feeling. However, there was just the boss and me and his business has seriously gone under and there was no other outcome! I wouldn't consider it a fail....big time, and neither should you!

Depression WILL set in, if you allow it. These are not easy times, so here is what I have done. I still have a routine every day.....getting up at the same time....taking exercise, walking works for me. I got involved in local community projects (I was always involved in musicals and drama through the years) like youth work, under age soccer (fund raising) etc. This can be tough but it is amazing the amount of people you meet up with, people you wouldn't have met before, because you were too busy travelling to and fro to work. Getting involved like this is also a form of networking, and if you have a talent to offer, you never know a job may come out of it! I know a guy who was made redundant long before this recession and got involved in the local golf club. He now has a job there and on 40k a year. Use your talents and put them to work in the community.......check out the local notes for your area in the regional newspaper and see what clubs/societies are in the locality and take it from there. Best of luck.;)
