Nobody really knows. Apple are due to update the macbook pros very soon though, based on their previous update cycle. There is an event introducing a new product this wednesday, so an update may be announced then. Or they could simply update the website quietly any tuesday from now.

You have €500-600 to spend and you're asking in a Mac forum?
Nice and shiny as Macs are and all but they're way over priced and are often glorified fashion statements. (I know Macs are good solid machines but a lot of people do buy Macs just cos they're pretty)

You'll be starting at around €900 for a Mac. Also you'll have to use OSX not windows. While OSX may arguably be a better, more feature rich OS you'll have to figure out how to use a new operating system. You can also run Windows on a Mac, if that's what you're used to along side OSX.

€400-600 will get you a perfectly good Dell Studio 15. They aren't crap but they're not as well build as a Mac. Standard plastic as opposed to machined out of a solid block of aluminium. Toshiba, Acer and Asus also make good Windows laptops.

I guess you can use the tired car analogy with Macs. Your Average Dell or Toshiba laptop is a Ford or Toyota while a Mac is a Rolls Royce.

Office (Excel, Word etc) will cost you extra. Perhaps consider Open Office. It's a free alternative that does much the same thing. Office and Open Office are available on both Mac and Windows.

Also bear in mind that OSX is not as heavily supported as Windows when it comes to hardware and software. If you pick up a game or some software it'll more than likely run on Windows but you may need to find a Mac compatible version. Games in particular are thin on the ground for Macs.

If you're in University you may be able to avail of a discount offer with one of the big OEMs, usually Dell. They'll also give you access to software like Office too.

Another option, and this returns to the OP, are the small ~10"Netbooks. An Asus EeePc costs peanuts and are available in various specs. Many of the cheaper ones run Linux instead of Windows however so it may not be as accessible at first.
Personally I love Linux but it can be prickly for new and novice users.

Apologies to the locals for the Mac bashing

It's true: Macs look nice. They also work nice. Verus a cheap Windows PC - which often resembles a piece of sh*t. And works like one too.

    Macs are win-win.

Meh, intel CPUs are still intel CPUs.
Now if they could only run half the software I want! :)

Wait for the apple announcement next week. I recently bought a macbook pro. It's sweet! runs OSX & windows 7 side by side on the same screen. Get at least 4GB ram though.

Have you looked? :p I don't know what software you use, but for the vast majority of software needs there is a Mac application available. "Macs don't have software" is a very, very old myth. Quantity should not be confused with quality.

    Specialist Engineering software mostly.
    ProEngineer
    Solidworks
    Fluent
All of our CNC machine Software.

Its a totally picky point but you'd be mad to buy a Mac if you're an Engineer! :D

A lot of engineers (various fields of eng) I know own macs and love using them. Whenever necessary you can easily run any version of that virus invested malware loving operating system (virtual or bootcamp).

Seriously though, the reason you cannot pickup cheap new apple laptops is that they refuse to use 4yr old processors such as Intel Celeron or Pentium Dual Core /core duo that you still see on shop shelves. My older macbook still runs quicker than any €400 PC and I'd expect the same from an expensive PC laptop.

Please compare like for like specs rather than saying PCs are cheaper. We recently had to purchase a work station for an Engineer at work and the Mac Pro was cheaper than a same spec Dell.

Ah now if were a workstation you'd be better off building it yourself.
My current system would have cost 4k on Dell. I build it for 1300.

An intel Mac does everything that a PC will do if you run windows on it, and you have the added benefit of OSX snow leopard.

With a budget of €400 - €600 you are better off getting a ULV laptop. Although slightly less powerful than a standard 15" laptop with a smaller screen, they more than make up for it in terms of portability and battery life.

I have one and it's built better than my brother's 15" Dell laptop which I am fixing here.

Check out laptopmag.com for reviews paying particular attention to the laptops with 11" screens on them. They are more powerful than Netbooks and so better suited to everyday tasks and watching movies.

Stay away from the likes of PC World, Dixons, Harvey Norman etc because they will sell you machines that are at the end of their shelf-life.

    Good luck with it.

Also a few people have stated that Apple stores are keeping staff overnight tonight to set up something new. iPads? New Macbook Pros? Who knows..

I've been told May 18th, so you might be better off getting a Macbook and trading up later.

If there isnt an update today I might just have to buy the current model.
My powerbook g4 is getting old and knackered at this stage.

I too am trying to improve on my G4 Goodness.

But I still can't figure out why the MacBook Pro is 1149 and the seemingling identical MacBook is 929. I'm looking at the specs online and the only deciding factor seems to be the backlit keyboard versus normal keyboard. Have to decide if some lights are worth 220 Euro.

One is made out of plastic. The other out of aluminium and is slimmer. There are other differences but that's the main one. See them both in person and you'll understand why the Pro is worth the extra. ;)

I'm hoping for the update too, but all the signs say no. No leaks. C2D MBPs still being manufactured in China up to week before last.

If it's not today, I think we're looking at June at the WWDC.

Apple has been dumping the existing MBP models in the Refurbished Store at an unbelievable rate for the last few weeks.

    Austrailia Store
    French Store
    German Store
    Irish Store
    Spanish Store
    U.S. Store

Previously if there were 5 items available it was alot, but recently they've had almost the entire range of models available in all stores.

Is there any way to tell which are existing stock and which are actual refurbished models?

iPad pre-orders are supposed to be going up. But MR also had some page 2 rumours about MBPs going up as well. We'll see.

Store is still down. Probably the iPad pre-orders - iPad is now the homepage, don't think it was before.

Nope. I'm wrong. Now just the ''Buy Now'' pages are down.

    From macrumours:

Update: 9 to 5 Mac now reports that the cited source may have been a hoax, although it notes that it has received multiple tips of a MacBook Pro release in the very near future.

CompuB are saying that it will be a couple of months before the iPad is released in Ireland

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,693 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Yeah, which means no pre-orders for us. I bet the store is just down for the US iPad pre-orders. Irish store will probably remain unchanged.

Store should be back by 1.30pm our time - 30 minutes from now. That's when iPad pre-orders are due to begin.

MBPs? I'm not optimistic. Apple are probably still pissing around over what chip to put in them. I don't know why I even care about them being updated anyway - I bought mine back in the summer. The longer till the next update the better I'll feel. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

Why do they need to take down all global stores to update the iPad pre-orders for the US only? Seems very odd... and haven't they updated US pages in the past without bringing everything down?

They'll probably add it to the Irish store with "pre-order coming soon" underneath.

Yep, nada. Way to go Apple... taking down all stores globally to update the US only? That's pretty retarded...

Not even. No difference there either.

Might be a bug. Will be up shortly no doubt.

The iPad is available to pre-order on the US store.

    Nothing for us.

    Pfft.
