Calorie Question - Which is worse?

    I've been trying to be good since Christmas and I was doing pretty well. Its been a bad weekend though with a lot of extra food that I should be avoiding. Just wondering though, is it worse to eat say 1000 extra calories over a weekend than it is to eat 1000 extra spread over the space of a week? Just curious really! Back to the homemade soup and wholewheat pasta tomorrow :)

    I don't think you'd put on any more or less weight from eating 1000 extra calories, no matter what period of time you spread it over. Though I think it's easier to pull back from two days of unhealthy eating and get back on track than it is from a week of it!

    Well from my understanding of metabolic pathways it would definately f*ck with your metabolism less (you wouldn't put on as much weight) and be less of a strain on your system if you ate it all in one go rather than in dribs and drabs over the course of a week. But I might be wrong, I'm just going on hormonal effects and the likes.

    It really depends on a lot of things.

    There is a good case for eating one high calorie meal once a week or so if you are consistantly eating low cal, just to reset your leptin levels and reassure your body that it's safe to keep burning fat.

    Ideally, you'd set your calories just below your maintenance, so your body doesn't even notice you losing weight, but that's hard to do. Adding in 1000 cals over the week can result in adding in a lot more than you realise.

    In my case it was a blatant case of nutritional misbehaviour! I was surrounded by a crazy amount of sweets and biscuits and desserts for the weekend and my good behaviour went out the window.

    What Im hoping someone will say is "God no Trotter, your body would have been so shocked at the sight of the 3 packs of biscuits that the fright means you'd only absorb 2 biscuits worth"...

    So.. anyone??? :P:o:D

    Er no, that's not going to happen. Especially if you have practice at eating biscuits.....

    But the "cheat meal" does have its place.

    I am one of those people who eats very well all week and then has a total food blow-out on the weekend. I'm trying to stop this (it's mainly when I get drunk so I'm cutting down on booze big style!) but I have to say that as long as I go back to healthy eating the next week it doesn't affect me much at all. Yes the scales may say I've gone up as much as 3lbs over one weekend, but then I'll be fine again in a day or two and back to my normal weight. If you are actually looking to lose weight I would not recommend the extra 1000 calories ANYWHERE in your diet, but if you are just maintaining weight then the odd slip up won't make much difference. In fact, I've read in various places that it keeps your metabolism ticking over if you DO vary your amount of calories from day to day.
