3 Broadband (statement and question)

    Hey,

    1. I live in rural kerry (NOT a bogger :P ) so i guess im lucky to have bband at all. 3 was great good speeds and stable connection. But then towards the end of december the connection has become farcical. The speed is crap and the connection has become unstable e.g. 2hrs. + to dload itunes  . I was wondering if anyone else has experienced similar trouble recently with 3.

    2. If i were to swap from three which would be the best alternative. I dont want to do the land line thing of switching calls to get bband.etc. so does that just leave vodafone /o2 (meteor not available in my area). The main reason i went with 3 was because of their large monthly limit. would viewing youtube deduct from 'download limit' with vodafone/o2 because it does with 3 ?

Thanks in advance for your comments :)

well very lucky i must say but 3 do cover alot of the country alot more than o2 or vodafone!!i havnt experianced any slow downs with 3 over christmas at all in fact it became even faster lowest speeds i got wher 1.5 mbps highest 3.52 mbps this is a constant speed no lower no higher ...connection never droped out once on me since i got it maybe cos im only 40mins from dublin..it sounds like a network issue did you try contacting 3??as far as i would go would be to try o2 please do not use vodafone there is a thread on this that shows even landline broadband slower than internet in the 90's :eek: personally i like 3 and have had very good service with them i found o2 to be useless in my area full 3G signal just barely loads pages on the net you could hav a try of o2 for yourself maybe it might be faster than where i am :D:D

oh and i forgot youtube will use up your montly usage with any broadband provider 02 meteor 3 vodafone eircom upc and the whole lot are the same !!

But you don't have broadband. You have mobile Internet access, but is not, and never will be, broadband.

I would guess you're one of thousands.

You'll need to check what's available, and what performance you get from them. Anyone else's experience will be irrelevant to you. That's simply how the technology works.

    Everything counts will all providers.

That's not true. Three have coverage in some areas that the others don't, just as the others have cover in areas that Three don't.

Vodafone mobile and landline are completely different and separate from each other. Problems with one have nothing to do with the other. He'll have to find out what's available, then try them. There's no way to know if it will work properly or not before trying it out.

just upgraded too the E5830 wireless modem with 3 and i cant believe the difference its made. i had 2.5 mb/s earlier. never experienced speeds like that from home before. i even watched a film on line earlier:D. my old dongle E160g was decent enough sometimes but more often than not spent more time reconnecting the f++king thing.
i haven't had to reconnect once tonight

well i think the coverage maps tell a differant story im not saying 3 do have the best cov im just saying more areas are covered than other providers...im well aware DSL and 3G are differant what isnt differant is that both connect through the same vodafone servers so if your on 3G Or DSL and vodafone has problems which it has on a country wide scale and cannot seem to fix it both are going to fail so.....;);) and as you said you wont know until you try it out !!! :D:D:D

    :)

I got 3 bband in middle of Dec last. Initially it was great for first two days then for the next four or five it was very slow, but still a bit faster than the dialup i had previously with Eircom (32kbps I live beside a hill) Any week up to Christmas and right up to 2 weeks ago the speeds where brilliant, nearly always at least 3Mbps. But in last two weeks I have had countless problems. There have been days that it is saying its connected but I can't browse and the other days are like today where I can browse but at very slow speeds 0.15Mbps and even at that i have to keep reconnecting as it keeps cuting out. I have rang their customer services 4 times now and still get the usual line of it may be my Pc. But i know it is'nt cos I have tried it on my daughters brand new laptop and same results. (laptop had never been connected to internet before)
I am using a Huawei E1750 and a repeater units, does anyone know if I insist on them giving me the satelite receiver would that inprove my service, or is it still down to their network problems.

The satellite service competely bypasses their mobile network, so it is not subject to the same network problems. It is provided by a 3rd party company. In general, it is likely to be much more reliable for speed and consistency than their mobile service, although it will suffer from the same latency(delay) issues as all Satellite. The indications from other users of the satellite service are that it is reasonably reliable, although it may slow down if they put too many users on it in the future.

You must keep pestering 3 until they give you the Satellite option. It is clear that your service does not meet the specification by Govt for the NBS. 3 are obliged to give you the Satellite option at the same price as their mobile service, although they will try to avoid it, because they lose money on it.

Make sure to copy your experiences to the Minister for Communications Eamonn Ryan, as his Dept is paying €80M of taxpayers/EU funding to 3 under the delusion that their service actually works. They are only supposed to have a small number of users on Satellite, but in practice nobody is getting the specified NBS service from their mobile service, so everyone is automatically entitled to satellite. Some people just put up with the bad service...don't be one of those...persevere.

Thanks for sharing your experience. You are absolutely correct in concluding that your problems are nothing to do with your PC or dongle.

The big problem is the day to day inconsistency. I am with 3 & right now I have a reasonable service but from 9am to 4 pm I could not log on at all !.

Sometimes it appears to be the usual contention issues but then sometimes I have been unable to log in at 3 am ! . I would want a longer trial as 3 were good in the beginning.

I think that the modem can make a difference as can positioning. I could barely get a signal & I ended up putting the modem in the loft which made a huge difference. Some modems have the potential to attach a external aerial.

Does the NBS apply to all areas & where can one find details ?

You are entitled to a better service in a LIVE NBS area.

Lots in Kerry. Marked GREEN on this map....grey means feck off and red means feck off until it turns green.
