Insuring a Modified car in Ireland - Is it possible anymore??....

    Hi Guys,

My car is modified and mods declared to insurance co. (remap & Induction)
Just got my renewal quote today and it's a bit steep so I rang around a few insurers and brokers.
every single one of them said that they dont insure modified cars, wouldn't touch it!
I did a bit of research and from what I heard/seen the more likely ones were Axa, Aviva (Hibernan), Britton and St Pauls
None of the above would quote me on a modified car.

I guess I'll have to stick with what I have, but I dont reckon they will let me do any more mods to the car.

Anyone here got any tips for me??.....

I really wish we had some of the UK insurers over here who understand the Modified car market.

    It is possible

    www.goldenpages.ie

Take an hour and call every insurance company there
    Now you say:
    I rang around a few
A few isn't good enough, call them all!

And when you get a few quotes call them back and start them bargaining against each other.
It is possible, you just haven't tried

    OK, let me clarify.
    I didn't ring every one.
I spent 2 1/2 hours ringing brokers and companies and NONE of them would quote me.
Now if you happen to know of someone that would please let me know, otherwise keep your smart comments to yourself.

    Nothing smart about my post

If you called around for over two hours then put that in your post so

Well sorry I didn't specify the amount of time I spent.
    Anyway
Out of interest do you have a modified car insured at present and was it difficult to get quotes?

Did you try travelers? - http://www.travelers.ie/iwcm/Ireland/products/privatecar/index.html

They have a list of brokers on there sight that can usually get good deals with them, they underwrite 123.ie's policies.

They used to be associatted with st pauls but not sure if there the same or seperate now

Yeah tried a few of their brokers but no joy.

But just found a crowd in cork that will do it with an engineers report
Arachas - seem reasonable so far.

Im insured with quinn (al mods; brakes, exhaust, suspension, induction kit, delcared) only put €50 on my policy to add them.... last year I was so sick of dealing with Quinn I looked round at my options... and i realised i didnt have any!!! noone will insure the FTO at all never mind with mods!!

My advice? get a quote for the standard car... insure it and add the mods to the policy the next day! :D they cant refuse to add them once you have a policy!!

insure it as a normal car

they will never ever find that its remapped

and... induction kit? common, say u got diffirent air filter thats it
from this what i know, they dont care about air filters unless u will tell them it makes your car modified.

Lucky for you - Quinn wont even insure my car standard!
Focus ST 2.5 Turbo is too high performance for them!!!

I'd rather insure it properly tbh
And it's a full forced cold air induction kit, not just a different filter so it's pretty obivious that it's modded.

Very hard to find someone to insure a moddified motor...think I've rang them all at this stage..........So I'll watch this thread with interest.....

Hence why I've kept my celica standard....and even that was a job since it's a jap import....

mik da man - u have to find out yourself if the diffirent air intake system is a modification which affect your insurance rate

    shouldnt!

and by the way this is not full cold air intake system ;)

it sucks plenty of hot air which has a lot less oxygen capacity, looks great but isolate it! u will feel the diffirence, especially in the summer time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,036 ✭✭✭BArra

Quinn do insure ST's mik, they first told me they dont insure anything over 2L for anyone of any age...

then i said thats a problem as my ST is parked on my driveway, and they soon changed their policy

got reasonable enough quote, but im hoping it drops a bit when i hit 25 this april, that or ill be off to travellers insurance

Did you already have a quinn policy?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 244 ✭✭miss enzo

you could insure a micra or summit and then insure the ST! they told me I couldnt insure anything over a 1.6 till i was 25..... got the FTO when I was 22 and they didnt bat and eyelid!!
Once you have a policy they will have to give you a quote (and nothing too crazy) on the ST.

What are you details.... Age, NCB, previous cars?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 9,980 ✭✭✭mik_da_man

    I'm 28 with 9 years NCB!
Had a different focus and an astra before.
Had the astra insured with quinn years ago.

The prob is that I dont have another car to just insure with them so I can switch.
Looks like I'll have to go down the route of engineers report and so on....

Might just give quinn another bell and speak to a Manager, not too sure if they can refuse to quote me cause of the car I own

Actually i work for a car insurance company and they can refuse. especially if its the next day. they will ask for your no claims bonus and see the mods covered on it or they can ring your previous company and ask them, if they tell your new company then they'll cancel the policy for non-disclosure and your insurance will sky rocket / you just wont get insurance. with another company.

That's the standard policy.....You're not looking for one of them....

You need to go for the Non Standard Risks policy link when looking for a quote, NOT the normal one. This will include modified.

With all companies, modified is not the norm so you need to do more to get a quote.

Have you tried First Ireland? I'm insured with them on a (declared) remapped 2004 Jap Import RX-8. I'm 24 with 4 years NCB and 4 penalty points. Premium is €1550 with €250 excess. Worth a shot!

XS Direct didn't like my mods
I did get a quote from Arachas of €1200 with all mods declared subject to an engineers report
Looks like the best I'm gonna get

having worked in the insurance industury and having a backround and trade from the motor industary i can completey agree that irish insurers do not have a clue about current trends and vehicle modifactions
and with a lack of education comes ignorance
an insurance company is legaly obliged to quote you so try that on them next time they refuse you a quote.
take note of when and who you spoke to . if your not getting any joy form the inital person ask to speak to a superior.
remind them of there obligation to quote and reference the insurance ombudsman

its like going to a doctor and him saying he does not treat sick people
my advise is to ask to speak to somrone in charge of the underwriting as my experience is that most of the employees are trained only in phones and sales. very few have any qualafactions

if that all goes tits up a garage policey is my advise
1000 to 1500 for the year and your free to drive what you want
great if you have a few cars or heavily moddified car and less hassle from those other ignorant *unts the cops

axa quinn and rsa will all deney any claim thay can . if there is found to be modifactions carried out
this can lead to a number of issues especialy if your unlucky enough to have a crash with another vehicle and or injurys.

i had an experience of axa denieying a cliam because of an induction kit fitted to an interga . i had to say it to the engineer that because of the poor quality install that the vehicle would be under preforming . he did not want to listen . so i offered my advise to the owner he took the vehicle to be tested for proformance and sure enough it was well down on power
he went to the ombudsman and he ruled in the customers favor it was a long drawn out battle but he won in the end
axa had to review there policy wording because of this .
    ****in robbin pricks anyway.

To get a trade policy you're supposed to be in the trade. It's not meant for any joe soap. If you were stopped at 3am by the Guards, what would your excuse be? You were working on the car until the early hours?
