"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me... True or not?

This came up in English yesterday, while we were looking at 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.

The teacher asked "Now who here has been hurt by words?" Everyone, except for one, put their hands up.

'And who hasn't?' says she. I hold up my hand, with a certain feeling of smugness over the sensitive cunts in the class.

What about you. Do you really think words can hurt you?
Personally, I don't care about people insulting me. I might get a bit pissed off, but I'd never feel emotionally hurt for Christ sake. Some people need to get over themselves.

    Anyone else?

Also, as if sticks and stones can break anyone's bones.. what nonsense

A Centra sign fell off the wall and landed on my foot once.............so, technically, yes words can hurt!

    Sure that wouldn't hurt?

Obviously they cant physically hurt you (unless it happens to be falling signage) but yes, words can hurt you...... especially if you're a sensitive soul like me :o

Words do hurt though. I'd rather get punched in the face than get a lashing off some peoples tounges

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭f3qh5g0z6vc7ob

I think it depends on the words or the person saying it to me.

Eg: If someone bumped into me or i bumped into them and they said you stupid cow Id pass no heed.

But if it was someone I thought loved me or I loved them eg in an abusive relationship and lets say my other half was calling me fat or ugly etc it would hurt me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 649 ✭✭✭Antbert

Of course they bloody can! Even if you're not being beaten with a dictionary. Or maybe words can only hurt girls. Alright not physical pain, but if that's what you thought she meant then that's being irritatingly pedantic.

    Yep.

That's nothing to do with feeling 'hurt', I was just confused/exasperated as to why everyone in the world seems to think I'm a gay.

    Not hurt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,396 ✭✭✭✭Karoma

So, it caused some mental distress? Why? If you walk like a duck, talk like a duck...chances are you're gay. We digress. It's cool with me and most of boardsies if you are (you always struck me as possibly gay - you strike me as someone with lots of female friends, who puts on a bit of a show to distraa...anyways. Back on topic...)

Nope. The only time I've ever cried in the last 10/11 years was when my nan died. I'm not a cryer... I don't have emotions except for grumpiness

He put a sad face in that post! What more proof could you need. Nothing denotes emotion like a sad face.

He also admits to liking bread! Clearly, he's a raging homosexual.
    PS: Whoosh!

PPS: What I'm getting at is that there's an emotional reaction to words - 'hurt' doesn't have to mean a sad/depressed reaction; it can be a bit more angry (Johnny Cash -v- NiN .)

Well i'm sure if a doctor came up and said 'Were sorry, but your entire family has been diagnosed with cancer... except you...'

That'd strike a nerve man... having to live with nobody around that you know... that'd hurt!

PS i mean no offense to any of the boardsies who take the cancer mentioning the wrong way, i'm truly sorry if you've lost a family member due to cancer.

I think the older one gets, the saying hold true. I know when i was goin to school words certainly hurt me. But i got a thicker skin since then. Therefore people now, who use the same words, get a swift and sharp '**** off'....

+1 , when i was bareley out of my teens , i was working overseas and ended up working for a sadistical monster who subjected me to verbal savagery on a daily basis for almost four months , i was relying on the gig at the time and didnt leave but such was the visciousness of the abuse that it caused me to have a near breakdown , were that to happen now , over ten years later , i would not have been anywhere near as freaked out and would have dealt with the situation much better

Great brummy you had to make the poll public. Now my tough-man veneer is gone. :(

Anyway, of course they hurt, sometimes even more than sticks or stones tbh. There's been plenty of evidence recently to show this is true. Sadly, what you say to someone matters, so never be quick to bring somebody down...you wouldn't like if it was done to you.

Everyone has a weak point psychologically, some people take abuse better than others, but at a constant level, it can still effect them. Everyone has a limit.

    It burns my ears:(

I used to be way more sensitive, even just a few years ago, but having that group of friends where everybody slags the crap out of each other is just so much easier (I went from one of those all-girly gangs of friends to about a 70/30 mix of guys to girls, life is good:))

Of course words can hurt emotionally. Would you not feel hurt if someone you loved and cared about and highly respected told you they cared nothing for you? Or were disappointed in you? Or thought you were an awful person?

Stupid question to be totally honest, everyone knows words can hurt. It's not just talking about insults.

I'd rather get physically wounded than emotionally wounded. Physical wounds heal but emotional ones last far, far longer.
