how did ye get on with the interview. i thought mine went ok, i should have shown a bit more knowledge on the questions about the financial markets but it was no disaster like.

I got an email on Friday (12th) telling me that I'd gotten through to the next round, but no details or even a date as of yet. I'm slightly concerned about it being next week though because I'm in the UK for interviews most of that time.

Anyone have any advice for the first round interview?

Its largely competency based (like 90%). Just rememeber examples of teamwork, problem solving, comunication etc and stick to your talking points. She'll be ticking them off as you go through. Q at the end about current financial markets. I stupidly said the agriculture and commodities didn't look to good...maybe if I say it again this year it'll sound better...

    Best of luck.

Anyone know how many are called for the first round interview?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 Rachiexx88

have no idea how many have been called but considering interviews are over 2 weeks must be quite a lot! maybe 100? anyone any other tips for the interview! glad to know it is mainly competency based.

Would you need to know a lot about stockbroking and that? I have an interest in learning about all of it but don't know too much right now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭SGKM

I did it back in 2007 for the 2008 Grad programme... didn't get the job with Davy though.... From what I remember the first round was handy enough - mainly codependency based stuff, you should know a fair bit about what Davy do, issues that they are facing, where they derive their revenues from (there was a big article about the Irish stockbrokers in the Sunday Times business section about 2 months ago -try find it!), know what sections of the business are performing and what sections are in sh1t.

Know the ISEQ - be able to talk about a short term, medium term and long term investment strategy. Know some equity prices for a few (Irish) plcs (current, historic and forecast - Davy / stockbroker reports are class for that - feed them back their own opinions) and ideally a bit about their respective industries as you can take a view on that share. Know commodity prices (oil), exchange rates (€/$ and €/£), have a view on Nama, the IMF bailout, the banking mess, the Irish economy - trends and where it's heading. You should be keeping up with Irish business news - the Times, Indo, RTE business sections are good, so is businessworld.ie...

Make sure you know what area you want to go into and why you want to work there!

What areas are you guys going for? I'm well placed to help out people going for one of the 4 areas...

I put down Private Clients as my number one and Corporate Finance as my second choice, don' mind which one I get! Thanks SGKM, it helps a lot! :D Maths Student, I would imagine that if your background isnt in finance or economics then they can't really expect anything too technical from you! But clearly as you have an interest they would expect some current financial issues knowledge.

I'm interviewing next week, anyone have any idea of the salary involved?

    Hey SGKM,

Will take you up on your offer! Applying to Private Clients but not coming from an Accounting/Finance degree, do you know if they recruit many graduates from other disciplines? In saying that I have a good deal of personal experience investing in markets and previous work experience in a relevant role.

Would have opinions on most of the issues you mentioned above, any other area's they might look into?

Finally do you know how many are taken on in the programme?

    Regards

I don't know to be honest, I don't work for Davy so can't give an accurate answer to that. My understanding from being in the 'industry' is that coming from a related/relevant field can definitely help but if you're not and can justify why you should be taken on then you should be okay.

Fantastic advantage - make it known. It demonstrates an ongoing interest in financial markets

I can't imagine them going into any more detail for the first round. If you can talk about everything I mentioned in my first post I'd be surprised if you didn't sail it! The second round will be a lot tougher and more technical.

Back in 2007 for a 2008 start I think it was 8 in PC, 2 in CF and a few more in Research / IT. Maybe 15 in total. My guess for this year would be 7 or 8 people in total but that's as good as anybody's guess.

If anyone wants to PM me with specific questions feel free.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 cherry89

they were interviewing 200 people the last two weeks and they said that they'd get back to us the week of the 24th but that it would be in the later part of the week so any day now really.

25? That sounds wrong...sure theres another round of interviews after assessment centre.

    Where did you hear 25?

    Hi MWT,

I simply asked HR on the day. Was told around 25/30. The next round is group exercise and presentation on a stock (candidates will be notified in advance), with 5/6 people a day. A handful will then be dropped and final interviews after.

They couldn't give the final number they will be taking but said around (subject to business needs) 12.

    Hi Jbopping,

They said 25 overall, not each department. They only took on just over 10 graduates in total last year. In the presentation slides which showed all of last years graduates there wasnt much more then that and the majority are training as execution traders now.

    Dantheman,

    whats pfo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 maths_student

I got nothing-PFO nor offer! Anyone else still in this situation?

Yeah I got invited to assessment centre for private clients and two guys I know got invited to it for research. They emailed us all at 7.00 on Monday

Any one else still not rejected or accepted yet?-still waiting myself. Their HR is a bit of a joke really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭bah1011

havent heard anything either. Is it safe to assume the worst at this stage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 707 ✭✭✭ulinbac

2 others and myself have been rejected since Thursday.

As NardDogg said, their HR is a joke!! Any other company I have dealt with have responded within 48hrs and interviewed a lot more than they did over the 2 weeks. Their responses were over a week late and that is not acceptable.

Anyway, time to prepare for the next interview. :)

    Gl Ulinbac,

What interview do you have coming up?
Has anyone here heard anything from/got an interview for NCB Stockbrokers?

I was wondering the same thing about NCB, I'm in the same boat, still waiting. It's 2 months since I applied, very poor showing on NCB's part to leave us in the dark this long. I'll contact them on Monday.
