Oh God yes... an Apple tablet!

Am going to Miami in June so an Apple Tablet would be a nice prezzie to bring myself home! :D
Apple just announced an event on January 27th that will no doubt dazzle us with what the company is calling its "latest creation." At the event, Apple will unveil the company's long-rumored tablet device.

This morning, Apple sent out inviations to an event January 27th, where the technology company will unveil its long-awaited tablet product.

Apple just announced an event on January 27th that will no doubt dazzle us with what the company is calling its "latest creation." At the event, Apple will unveil the company's long-rumored tablet device.

Apple sent out invitations to selected media outlets this morning, asking people to "join us for an invitation-only event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on January 27 at 10:00a.m." Fox will be live all morning long from San Francisco, bringing you all the fruit (and gadgets) that the Apple tree bears.

Reports suggest that this device has been years in the making (just take a look at this enthusiast-generated gallery of Apple table concepts, originally posted to Gizmodo two years ago), and I'm as excited to see it as you are.

I spoke to a source at Apple this morning, before the invite hit my inbox, who said the event would likely focus on three projects: The tablet device, iPhone 4, and a new round of iLife 2010 software. While we won't see new iPhone hardware just yet, we will see the next-generation software.

Apple is known to pull a last-minute rabbit out of a hat, however ... and just as likely to stuff it back in again. Last September, the company surprised fans by suddenly removing the camera from latest generation iPod Touch just before the Fall iPod event. As a result, the big stories from the September keynote were Steve Jobs back on stage after liver surgery and a Nano with a camera -- not a powerful new Touch.

Today's Apple invitation is vague as usual, but people love to look for clues in the message. The invite features spray-painted blobs amid vibrant color swatches, which could point to a device that captures "creative" activities. A tablet, perhaps? You bet your bottom dollar. Of course, it could also be a new Apple spray paint can that holds MP3s and unicorn tears. My money remains on the tablet, however.

See you next week from San Francisco at 10AM Pacific Time!

    Come in the tablet!!

I ****in love Steve jobs. I'm a total apple hype addict.

Anyone know what channel we can see this live on? On sky, you can get it somewhere between 501 (sky news) and 509 (fox news)

    I really hope they release the tablet with a €400 - €500 price-tag.

Anything more than that is madness.. I've been hearing a $999 price-tag banded about.

    See here!

And if the Apple one is too pricey (although Machead's will still buy it no doubt): http://www.cio.com/article/512466/An_Affordable_199_Tablet_for_Everyone

Live? Don't we always have to wait for Apple to put it up on it's site?

Still highly skeptical - from what I've read on rumour sites - about the iSlate. If the price is 999 dollars with an OS close to that of the iPhone, I can't see it being that big a success outside of the diehard fans.

Well this is definitely going to be the release of the iSlate (as I heard it's going to be called).

Really curious about it, and have lots of questions.

Is this the future of Laptops?

    What price will it be?

Will it work on 3G phone networks and if so will Apple tie you into a carrier like with the iPhone?

How practical will it be, eg, how can you watch a movie without holding the screen, can it stand up?

Finally, battery life....I hope it's better than the iPhone!

While I am looking forward in seeing the new tablet and iPhone OS 4 I do sometimes wish they would go a little bit back to their roots and update the MacPro.....! I really need to update my PowerMac and just know as soon as I hit that order button something new will hit the shelves..!

Steve jobs top man at apple and Disney. Disney bought marvel comics a few months ago. The new islate will be a KIndle type device that can display colour comics perfectly.

Yeah, it's invitation only.. the most I'd probably expect a as-it-happens feed from a journalist in the room on MacRumours etc.
Still highly skeptical - from what I've read on rumour sites - about the iSlate. If the price is 999 dollars with an OS close to that of the iPhone, I can't see it being that big a success outside of the diehard fans.
You're spot on. That's exactly it.. Apple have put a patent in for the 'iSlate'.

The price is a kicker.. but it is an Apple product (and despite the fact I love them), it wouldn't be Apple unless it was overpriced. I can see the cost of producing the screen being the kicker.

The OS will be identical to the iPhone.. why break something that works well? Not to mention on a larger scale and with more power behind it.

None of these will be answered until next Wednesday I'd say. My own predictions:

Is this the future of Laptops? No.. tablets have been around for years. It's Apple first attempt at a tablet but nonetheless, it might strive towards replacing the laptop but it'll have a long way to go.

What price will it be? Unfortunately.. I'm guessing somewhere between the $799 - $999 mark (or over here, €899 - €1199 mark)

Will it work on 3G phone networks and if so will Apple tie you into a carrier like with the iPhone? I'd probably expect it to work over 3G but wouldn't be suprised if it didn't. And no, I don't think there's a possibility in the slightest that it'll be locked to a carriers. It'll be sold in Apple Stores Worldwide with varying prices - that's it!

How practical will it be, eg, how can you watch a movie without holding the screen, can it stand up? I wouldn't expect it to stand-up on it's own out of the box.. it's meant to be used on a surface and upright wouldn't make immediate sense to me (outside of watching a movie). However, I'd expect accessories to do this if you wish.

It could well revolutionise the print industry - not entirely with one device, but it might standardise a platform and user expectations for digital print.

Also, Apple are UI gods. I can't wait to see what this thing looks like.

Bob Iger is the top guy at Disney, Jobs is on the board and is the major stockholder.

Excluding cost etc., I think the type of screen is going to be another major factor in how this machine performs. If it's a traditional LED, or even OLED screen, I can't see people giving up the print copies of Time etc. due to the inherit eyestrain that comes with them. If they could get Pixel QI screens I could maybe see it taking off, but that still leaves weaknesses for other types of applications.

I got my iphone3g on Day Two of the frenzy that accompanied the introduction almost two years ago.

As it was day two I only stood in line for six hours which was okay, it was a beautiful day in Seattle. And they brought us water and snacks as wee waited.

But myself and all the others who signed two year contracts with at&t two years ago are wondering what we will be enticed with to get us to sign up again.

While the tablet sounds really exciting its the new iphone that will really get my attention.

If there is indeed a tablet I've already written off as a disappointment.

    For the following reasons.

I'd want it to hook up to my mac pro station, use as an external screen and use it like an elaborate Wacom graphics tablet.

If it's just going to be a bigger iPhone then I don't really see the point. If it has 3G how can I use my sim that I have unlimited data plan on? You can't have have dupe sims can you?

That being said if this device is a 10" iPhone it would be great to ditch my old and ugly samsung netbook in favour of this.

Anyone think the iPod touch will se an update? The one we were meant to see in September?

iPhone is what I am more excited about. Apple have me by the balls on that one.

Here's an interesting patent I just remembered:

    http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/15936/

Could we see something similar for the iSlate?
Is this the future of Laptops? No.. tablets have been around for years. It's Apple first attempt at a tablet but nonetheless, it might strive towards replacing the laptop but it'll have a long way to go.

There were MP3 players around before the iPod. There were smart phones around before the iPhone. Both have revolutionised their fields, with competitors striving to capture Apple's success.

Another rumour to throw into the mix.

Apple and Harper Collins negotiating e-book deal for tablet - Wall Street Journal via Engadget

An ebook reader could be interesting depends on how its implemented. It would probably be just another feature of the iTablet rather than it being just an ebook reader.

There's another rumour that some of the major news organisations have a big 'digital content' announcement for 'sometime in the next 10 days'.

If anyone can force an industry ahead by tens years it's Apple.

TV content from sources other than cable tv providers is becoming increasingly popular in the us.

We just got a new bluray player with Netflix (and YouTube) built into it so we can access our Netflix account directly on the TV. Pretty cool.

Microsoft is going to try some similar service I heard.

Also the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes and Noble Nook are really getting popular as book readers.

So my guess is that the tablet is going to include enhanced itunes movie and tv abilities. With a hdmi connection to tv's. And an arrangement with some top book seller to carry their content as well. Border's is another high street US book retailer who hasnt entered the book reader market yet, so maybe them.

Seriously though, there's rumours saying now it's going to be pretty big for gaming as well.

Two thumbed gaming on an iPhone I can just about credit. Two handed gaming I would be very surprised by. Might be good for RTS and minigames, but that's all I can imagine.

I think there's definatly a market there for the tablet. A lot of people use laptops just as media devices at home, as has been pointed out, apple don't tend to release products until they're very highly polished and real quality. Apps are bound to be a big hit as well.
I would be surprised though if its just the iphone OS on steroids on it. Think it would be a bit of a waste of potential considering the size difference. Also heard that there will be some sort of 3D (seems to be the current buzzword!) interface based on this patent
    http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/05/apple-patent-application-points-to-3d-multi-touch-manipulation/

Any idea what will be coming to iphone 4.0?

Yeh it'll most likely be the iphone OS on steroids, but it'll be the 4.0 version and not the current one if it is. Since the 4.0 version is said to look fairly different from the current version, we still have no idea what the tablet's OS / UI is going to look like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

Yeah, in hearing that 4.0 is a bit of a leap too.

Surely the hugely faster processing power of the tablet would mean there is potential to do more than what can be done on an iPhone?

I've also heard the NY Time are going to the show to announce some content partnership. I'm sure this will be bad news for the kindle and Sony reader.

My money's on an iPhone OS, as opposed to a Mac OS. Because I suspect the machine will be powered by an ARM Cortex rather than say an Intel Atom. Now, I guess the way the core of Mac OS X is set up that there probably is an ARM build of Mac OS and an Intel build of iPhone OS, but realistically I don't see it happening. Also if the tablet ran Mac OS, you'd expect stuff like Word to run on it. Personally though I would like to see a relaxation on loading apps to it if it does run iPhone OS.

Nice up to date selection of leaks and rumours here.

I'm particularly interested in the prices mentioned.
It will cost $599, $699 or $799, depending on the screen size and internal memory – What a predicament! All the while we thought this will be unveiled ranging from 900-1000 USD and then this? I say sweet, although there’s some “IF” which depends mainly on the specs and size of the tablet.

I remember hearing the high price ranges up untill reading this but I have
only heard Apple were buying up the 10" screen stocks......so....
