I have an iPhone with O2. Got it last June. Today they released new iPhone plans and the ones I am on are no longer available to new customers. Basically the new equivalent to mine (advance 350) is €5 a month cheaper and the data limit is now 3GB. The think is if I wish to change to the now available tarrif I have to sign a new 18 month contract!

I was on meteor billpay before and I could switch from legacy plans to new ones no prob from next billing date. The only stipulation was that I had to wait 6 months to go to a lower plan.

Not to mention that it is mentioned on the page with the updated iPhone plans in the footer notes, if it wasn't clear enough in their updated T&C's.

    edit to add link: http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/connect/O2/Home/Explore+Services/Price+plans/Pay+monthly/O2+Advance+tariffs

Meteor are just the best. I miss them so much.

I requested the new 350 tariff today. Thinking wow fairplay 02. Only to come onto these forums then linked to the 02 forums to be told I have to sign up for another 18 months.

I just rang them back to say reverse that plz.

Done, and hating 02 more than ever.

Yeah i know that's ridiculous and bad business practise, and on top of that they have a cheek of calling it unlimited browsing when infact it's 3gb fair usage policy and offer valid till 31st of march, i will be jumping ship soon.

they just want to get more and more customers before vodafone launch iphone and i doubt it that step will gain them anything anyway. Stupid.

I love the ad on the radio.

iPhone ONLY on 02 which is crap because I know 2 people with iPhones from Vodafone already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

It is really screwing the existing customers so much. I know something like this shouldnt get me so worked up but come on like. A new 18 month contract to change price plans. What a mess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,519 ✭✭✭irish1967

Ok .. Just say you are happy with your iPhone on 02 and don't mind the new 18 month contract cause you had no intention of changing anyway are these new iPhone plans good? I am on advance 175 now for €45 and think I will change to 150. Am I right in saying that calls and texts to 02 mobiles won't be subtracted from my monthly allowance ?

That is correct, Free calls and texts to O2 numbers and 150 minute and 100 texts to other networks.

I might consider doing this, although I intend to upgrade my iPhone in the Summer (assuming Apple release a new one) and would check first how signing a new 18 month contract now might affect upgrade options...

This may be a stupid question, but does this mean if I was to sign up for an iphone today, I would have a data allowance up 3gb from now until 31st March, and it goes back down to 1gb from April until the end of my contract?
Or is it just if you sign up before 31st March, you get 3gb data until the end of your contract?

it sounds like it will be upped to 3GB, under review untill 31st of March. If O2 like what they see, it'll stay, otherwise it may be dropped again.

The data limit is unlimited. Fair usage means if you abuse the system i.e constantly exceed 3GB you may decide to charge you. As for the date, this is a date where we review the promotion and it maybe changed. I do not forsee this happening though.

Daryll once again I will say ye are a rotten sneaky crowd to call 3GB unlimited. Then to have the cheek to force people to sign a new 18 month contract. Lowest of the low.

I would advise anyone thinking of moving to O2 not to even think of it in a million years. Coverage is awful, have a reputation of putting on radio ads that are complete lies, and even after many many promises failed to introduce iPhone basics like visual voicemail and tethering. Go with one of the other networks.

    +1 totally agree.

However,I have no beef with Darly or his colleagues(assuming they are not the decision makers) , they can only work with what they are given, and within the scope of the o2 policies.(Just in case they think I'm aiming this at them)

Okay so 3GB is unlimited - but I wouldn't exactly call it "sneaky". Let's face it anyone whose going to consistently use more than 3GB on a mobile device isn't exactly green when it comes to tech stuff, and would want to be a bit of a dumbass not to have noticed this before signing up.

And as usual people like to think they have the right to rip up contracts they signed last year because other people are now getting better offers.

I don't really understand what you mean when you say 3GB is unlimited. It certainly is not. It's 3GB and thats what it should be called.

As for your other point, are you feeling ok? I do not want to rip up any contract. They have shelved the price plan I signed up to and introduced a slightly better equivalent. As far as I know no other operator asks you to sign a new 18 month contract to switch from a legacy price plan to a current one.

Ya there is nothing I can do about it I know but I still maintain it is really bad form.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

Apologies, that should have read "Okay so 3GB is limited"... typo!

Regarding the other, it just seems like a common theme that people sign contracts with O2 and then give dogs abuse when O2 try to hold people to them. O2 make their money by keeping people in contract - that's why people got iPhones for a couple of hundred euro.

The new tariffs are clearly meant to entice new customers, or get existing customers to renew their contracts.

Why can't existing customers get the same deal as the new customer? Without having to sign for another 18 months? When I was on Meteor I could do this. Not sure if you can still do it now.

Im sure o2 are lowering it because of demand( as they can now afford it) and competition( Vodafone). So why not pass it on to existing customers. It is the little things that go along way, and make us want to stay. As an existing customer I want to feel wanted. 02 are useless at this, in 02's case its the little things that piss us off. They do not do the little things for existing customers. There making people hate them with a passion.

This is why I can't wait to leave them. But the only thing holding me there is the iPhone and I hate that. And I know Im going to struggle getting the 4g when it comes out as new customers will be looked after first. But hopefully by then we will have other options to avoid 02.

Roll on the day when all the networks have the iphone.

I posted the new tariffs here.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/uploads/attachments/33908/103150.bmp

From what I can make out this is a typical marketing ploy by O2. There money is made in the contract you sign, if they manage to get existing customers to commit to an 18 month contract, they screw vodafone's iphone customer base.

Could boards.ie approach Vodafone for a members discount, I think were worth it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,680 ✭✭✭mondeo

02 are ignorant morons, fed up dealing with them on the phone. Useless shower.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 602 ✭✭✭philiporeilly

Not only do they force you into a new 18mth contract but you also sign that you will not tether using your device with your allowance.

This is the first step needed before they can start charging you €19.99 per month to tether using data you already pay for!

It's signing new contracts that make people stay, as far as O2 are concerned. :) Much more efficient than trying to woo a fickle, cash-strapped public.

I've got 12 months to go on my O2 iPhone contract and I'm counting down the days until it's finished. From the terrible coverage and reception to the continuing lack oftethering and the new price plans that require you to sign a second 18-month deal, O2's treatment of iPhone users has been shockingly poor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,384 ✭✭✭Eire Go Brach

ehhhh thanks dade. Dont know what I would have done without you. But I knew the answers. I was just putting them out there/ complaining, ranting. Bit of an 02 Fanboy?
Yeh we all know there for Business purposes and they all do make sense for slyly holding onto customers. But what about customer loyality? What about actually trying to keep the customers that moved to 02 for the iPhone? In the long run it wont be good for 02 as most of us will only stay with them as long as we have too.

Was asking the brother about this(from o2). He was saying that it would be hard to hit 3gb from using the iphone alone. They put a fair usage cap of 3gb as there are some people that have tethering on their iphone and would abuse the offer. The new plan is 200% more allowance, but guess it's not enough

Most people would go nowhere near 1GB not to mind 3. 200% more allowance maybe but it's only of any use if you can tether. You can't and could be charged for it. So in real terms for 99% of customers it will make no difference to their data useage.

    i agree with ziggy.

you can easily hit over 3gigs on an iPhone. When i'm working in the states (as i regularly do) i can easily hit 5 gigs on my iPhone alone. now i know i must be in the minority here but it's possible. my company pays for my unlimited data bundle there (part of my job) and the iphone isn't my only means of internet access meaning i don't teather either.

what people are complaining about is O2 advertising this as unlimited. it's not there's a catch, it's limited to 3072megabytes.

that's like saying i want to buy a top of the range ferrari no expenses spared, i ring up the ferrari dealer, explain i want top of the range with all frills and he says certainly sir, pop down and i'll take your money then upon arrival of my car i find it doesn't have sat nav or something. it's saying your service is one thing, but it's actually another. it's very misleading.

if they offered this new offer but instead of marketing it as unlimited and marketing it as it is i.e. a 3072meg limit then there wouldn't be anyone complaining.

also people need to stop spouting this bull**** that 99% of users won't use up their cap, it's the same on the broadband forums here. it's a moot point.

that 1% are boards users and heavy internet users, it's no wonder you get them talking about it here.

In regards to unlimited data, you could complain to Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland online at http://asai.ie/complain.asp

Very quick online form to fill out and they respond very quickly. I submitted one this week and got a letter posted to me following morning saying they are looking at it.

Before Xmas O2 advertised unlimited calls and internet on the radio, which was 1Gb and no mention of fair usage policy. I complained to ASAI and they contacted them. Within 1 week of complaint O2 had pulled advert from radio.

    "Dear Jean,
    Thank you for contacting O2.
The unlimited data would be available until the end of your contract and yes you would have unlimited usage.
Please note all iphone plans are for an 18 month contract. If you wish to move over to O2 bill pay I would recommend that you call in to your local O2 store and an agent there would be able to advise you further.
Feel free to contact us if you have any further queries.
    Kind Regards,

    Ruth
    O2 Customer Care
CCMA Contact Centre of the Year 2008"

Where have you guys found this only till March 31st thing?

I did see there was fair usage policy, but I didn't see a limit there - that's fair enough, I might not have read into the details enough - but that's annoying. I specifically signed up for o2 because it was unlimited data.
Anyway, how can I monitor my usage to make sure I don't go over this now?

Not when we have proper competition. I for one can't wait to leave 02 because of the way they are with the iPhone.

Does it make a difference whether you're downloading via O2 or via Wi-Fi in terms of the maximum usage?

At home my coverage is crap, so my iPhone automatically uses the Wi-Fi connection.

Since this is Eircom's and not O2's, is it considered part of the 3Gb allowance?

Unlimited aka 3Gb is available up until 31st March 2010 according to the contract. http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/connect/O2/About+O2/Terms+and+Conditions/O2+Advance/Tariff+terms

What's worrying is that out of all that small print that deadline is the only thing underlined so it could be just a quick promo to catch people for 18mths before Vodafone launch.

In regards to monitoring your data etc I would recommend you get the "My Bill" app. Its created by a great Irish iPhone app developer Vinny Coyne and it shows all your usage and bill info.

My thinking is that, between logging in via wi-fi at home, at work, in resturants etc., people can avoid using their O2 download allowance.

The 3GB limit is only on 3G anyway. They offer "unlimited" in Bitbuzz WIFI hotspots as well, but using your Eircom home WIFI doesn't affect any of your allowances from O2.
