I heard that on the radio.

    This bit baffles me:
She said originally the cost of introducing the HPZ vaccine scheme was estimated at €16 million but the new price was €3 million.

i dont understand how it could be so totally overestimated

It's possible that the cost of the vaccine has gone down, we may have negotiated a better deal, or it may be that the way the scheme is going to be implemented has changed.

hmmm ok. its still quite a big negotiation though! about 80% reduction.

not complaining though, its a good thing :)

Welcome decision, but it will not be retrospective, and women are bound to die from the year and a half delay.

Sales of Mercks Vaccine Gardasil have come under pressure from Glaxos recently introduced Cervarix. Could be that they are more prepared to negotiate a price.

    Anyhow its great news.

Well it's not that much of a saving.

The original cost of the vaccine was 10 million euro, not 16 million as now claimed by the Minister.

The plan now is to only vaccinate 1st year girls, instead of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year girls. So effectively only 1 third of the people who were originally going to be vaccinated are now going to be vaccinated.

So the cost is 30% of what it was but 33% of the people who were going to be vaccinated are now going to be protected.
