Do multi-pack cans/ 2-litre twin-pack bottles of coca cola....

...taste weaker than individual cans/ 2-litre bottles??

Ive been drinking the stuff for years and years and because of this I really can taste when the stuff is weaker than usual.

The coke from the individual 2-litre bottles that you find in the supermarket tastes better than the coke found in the 2-litre bottle found in the twin-pack (or triple-pack). It is not in my head; on more than one occasion I've been handed a glass of the twin pack stuff and have correctly judged it to be from a twin pack bottle.

I've also, on many occasions, purchased 6-can packs, 12-can packs and 24-can packs (where each individual can has a yellow ring around the top of the can, with the words "not to be sold as part of a multi-pack" written on it).
Now, I have also purchased 24-can slabs from garages....these are the cans that the shops put in the fridge...the individual cans that sell for approx 1 euro each....the ones that dont have any yellow multipack label on them. The individual cans from the garages, taste sweeter and generally nicer than the ones from the 24-can multi packs from the supermarkets.

I appreciate why you might say it's all in my head; after all, how many people say that coke is nicest, firstly, out of a glass bottle, then a can, then a plastic bottle? Most people would say this in my experience, and this is actually all in the head in my coke-experienced opinion. I think in this case it is because
    1. glass bottle= nostalgia...smaller amount of coke implies nicer
    2. can = you can't close it so you drink it before it goes flat
3 bottle= goes flat if you don't drink it quick enough

And it pisses me off when I see a shop trying to get away with selling multi-pack cans or twin pack 2-litre bottles of coke as though they are not from a multi-pack/ twin-pack.

Please, somebody confirm to me that they agree that the multi-pack cans and twin pack 2-litre bottles are of lower quality than the individual cans/ 2-litre bottles!!

I drink an awful lot of Coke, and can easily tell the difference between large bottle / canned / small bottle Coke, but have to say there's no taste difference between multipack and single bottles or cans.

The difference between bottles and cans or different sizes is down the the container itself and the pressure in it, I highly doubt they go the trouble of making more dilute Coke for 2l bottles that are going into a multipack, they just print a different label on them later.

When it comes to the drinking of coke in the 2l form, I give this advice. Don't close the bottle. Keep it open. You'll lose the fizz by opening and closing it. Don't bother arguing with me, I've proven it to anyone who tried to in real life. Don't believe me? Try it. Even stays good overnight.

    eehhh, no.

But the bottled stuff definitely isn't as nice as the canned stuff.

What if a 2l bottle of coke lasts you more than one or two days?

Open, pour a glass, close. If you're constantly opening and closing a 2l bottle enough to lose all the life out of it then you drink way too much coke.

At last someone who tastes a difference in the same drink. I dont really drink multipack cans so cannot comment on that but the cans that were out around xmas with a santa claus tasted terible compared with normal can, however the biggest difference in drinks is between 2 litre bottles of 7up. There are two types of bottles.

    This shape

    http://www.britishfooddirect.com/images/8717700001023_200.jpg

    and this http://www.shelflife.ie/img/November%2009/softdrinks1.jpg

There is a massive difference, the stuff in the first bottle tastes like cheap own brand crap from a shop while the second bottle tastes like, well 7up. Anybody else notice this?

and I'm not stupid enough to be comparing diet/7up free with normal 7up, both are supposed to be normal 7up.

Law of diminishing marginal utility:Consuming more of a product within a given period will at some point result indiminishing marginal utility.

Multi-pack cans and 2-litre twin packs are a lot of coke.

Even if you only grab a glass out of the bottle in a day?

How would you know? :P :pac:

I think they are the same, I cannot taste the differance anyway, athough I do prefer a can of coke to a bottle of coke.

Shouldn't 'Atari Jaguar' be an option in the poll.

Modding has gotten slack round here since dr.bollocko left.

The can and the bottle taste different because the acidity of the drink interacts with the container, or so I'm told.

Maybe they taste different because some retailers buy from outside the country: coke bottled/canned in Germany might taste slightly different from the stuff bottled here. The syrup is the same afaik, but the water supply might be different or something like that.

I was told this by someone working for coke in Ireland, of course it's possible he was pulling these facts out of his ass to make it look like he actually knew something about his job.

No, it's all in your head OP.

Seriously, the hassle to switch over an automatic production line to a weaker product would cost more then it's worth

I've started many threads with polls and there's always someone who chips in with this.

Yes I believe the syrup is the same but the sugar and other additives vary from bottlers. I know that some discount stores import Coke from foreign countries and it does taste rotten.

Our local newsagent imports Coca Cola
Well at least the label is in Arabic

Tastes rotten! And the owner still charges the same price as the other shops who get their coke from Dundalk and Northern Ireland. No price reductions at all

And then I'm supposed to support Irish shops. And feel guilty about not buying Irish when some shops won't even buy off from Coca Cola Ireland in Dundalk

Picture a different scenario. Two people go to the cinema and sneak in 2l of coke. Because cinema prices are stupid. Anyway, one person compulsively closes the bottle every time they take a drink from it. The other person doesn't. The first person will find the taste gone from the bottle a good while before they get to the end of it, whereas the other person will not have such a problem.

Coke tastes really different depending on the continent too. It's awful in China.

EU Coke has less E numbers too afaik. Apparently it's the 'healthiest.' :pac:

If they taste different then there's probably a difference in the "nutritional value". Might be worth comparing both to see if there's actually any difference in them at all or if it's all in the head.

A can of coke is nice but Pepsi is way feckin nicer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 667 ✭✭✭Linku

Most other countries don't use real sugar in their soft drinks, and use corn syrup or sweeteners instead, which is why Irish/UK Coke usually tastes better. People go crazy in the US looking for Coke with real sugar, which I believe is sold in Mexico, and in some shops in the USA during passover because the regular US stuff isn't kosher.

I think here is the country that uses real orange in Fanta Orange, presumably as it competes with Club Orange. Fanta abroad always looks lighter and tastes weaker.

Of course it's nicer, it has to compete with Orangina.

When we went on holidays to Spain, my parents would bring back a car load of Spanish wine, and I'd get a crate of Orangina.

Haven't had it since I was a young 'n though.

Nope, but have no gripes with people cunning enough to have gotten in there when times were good. Hate c'unts that got into the public sector back in the old days though, by virtue of nepotism.

Always thought that about the cans, never voiced my opinion though for fear of men in white coats calling to my door.

    However, the order of preference:

    Glass bottle
    Can
    Plastic bottle

Definitely isn't in anyone's head. Its all down to how its packaged. Same with anything, the aluminium affects the taste, etc

OP I think it might be mostly in your head.

    Something to try at home:
Take the wrapper off a 500ml bottle of coke you buy in the shop. Without the wrapper it tastes different. This is clearly all in your head

Just saw the thread o.p and i was going to mention this last week on here. I never buy multi pack cans of Pepsi but at the moment im living out in the bush in oz so brought 2x24 packs of pepsi, i usually only but the bottles. Anyway when i went to drink them they were without a doubt a lot weaker than the bottles:(.
