So the time has come, I now have the means, motive and opportunity to get fitter and stronger and its something I've wanted to do for a while. I'm starting Monday because thats when I go back to college. 19yr male btw, 70kg, 5'10''

I plan on starting a fitness log so all of you can shout at me when I start slacking off. My aims are a general improvement in overall fitness and strength im allocating 2/3 of the time to strenght and 1/3 fitness. I was hoping some of you could share some inspiration and perhaps words of motivational prowess because I know the time will come where I'll start to lose interest and I'll need the kick up the arse to get me started again! Anything from motivating quotes to reasons why its good idea to work on one's fitness!

Also if someone could answer me this, Im about 5-6kg overweight, i hope the cardio workouts will burn that off but does anyone think I should go 100% cardio first and lose the weight before concentrating on weight-lifting? Im only asking because the weight loss will require me to eat less but if I want to gain muscle ill need eat more:confused: <-me confused....my program is flexible enough at the beginning since im only a beginner myself so I can afford to prioritise.

    Thanks guys!

first off, make sure you DO start on monday!

secondly, you should do a split of cardio and weights, personally i would do 2/3 cardio and 1/3 heavy lifting, but opinions will vary here. also, there is more to lifting than building muscle, so even if your not eating a bulking diet you should still lift as there will be several benefits - metabolic, strength, look better naked etc etc.

I'm amazed that at 70kg and 5'10" you consider yourself over weight.
If I was in your position, I would say "I am not overweight, I am underweight." Then I would take advantage of the fact that I am both young and a beginner and work on getting stronger, as beginners develop quickly.

It is harder to get strong than it is to loose fat.

guys not everyone wants to be BIG. yes the OP has nothing to worry about on the weight front but getting to 65kg would be fine IMO, yeah he would look skinny(ish) but still a healthy weight

I don't want to be BIG either, but 65kg is scrawny.

whats your point though? So what if the guy wants to be skinny, all im saying is dont knock it just because it doesnt fit with your goals / ideals. I personally would not want to be that skinny, but were not talking about you or me, rather the OP!

    I'm not knocking anything.
OP has stated that he wants to get strong and put on muscle which counters the idea of being skinny. He seems to be asking for recommendations as to which way to go first.

Its nothing to do with my ideals.
Frankly, I'm not as sure as you that OP wants to be Skinny.
It certainly seems pointless to loose the fat, just to put loads on while bulking.

okaaaaay! Better clear the air here!

No I do not consider myself overweight at all! That was a poor choice of words by me.....Im ok with myself but I want to be more than ok ye know yerselves! What I should have said is I want to trim up a bit because whatever I do with the weights I want it to show yknow?

Also I went for a fitness assessment before xmas and my BMI was like just inside the healthy bracket and your one said losing a few pounds first wouldnt be too bad just to bring the BMI down before puttin on weight in muscle. Remember that was before xmas so im assuming that 4 weeks gluttony has had its toll and me and my poor BMI and so I estimated i've gone up to 5-6kg! In hindsight I think I've overestimated!

I dont want to be scrawny at all! Im not that build anyway. I was only asking if trimming the tummy a bit first was worth it?

    Ah.

    I dislike BMI.
BMI tells me that I am overweight. Nobody else would.
Its good as a broad brush, i.e. in the extremes, but I'm not overweight.
Also bear in mind that if you bulk like a mentalist, put on say 8kg of lean muscle over the next however-long-it-takes, then diet down to the BF you are at now, BMI will tell you you are more overweight than when you started.

I reckon you are probably a bit hard on yourself with 5-6Kg.
Thats probably a lot for 4 weeks.

I would say not, as if you wan't to put on muscle, then as you said, you will need to eat.

well I was about 4-5kg in december so I've estimated! I've been around the 70kg margin give or take 2kg for the past two years so I kinda 'feel' when I'm carrying extra baggage as it were!:p

But thanks, it was the answer I was hoping for/expecting because I've mentioned I'm putting 2/3 time into the weights and 1/3 cardio where I'll be keeping it nice n steady!

    Thanks for the replies guys!
