Autechre are doing a UK/Europe tour in March.

Anyone know if they are coming here?

Just find out where they're playing in the UK and fly over, flights will be next to nothing if you book far enough in advance and you'll probably get a far better line up.

They're not dance, they are electronica. You don't dance. You're supposed to just stroke your chin. Sean Booth pronounces it "awe-tek-r" :D

    Aw-Tech-er

Correct (under "What's In Those Names?") :D

And contrary to electrogrimey's flattery (aww, shucks :p), I think I said one thing to him about one particular song in the past :p I'm really into 'em, but I don't have all their albums yet, still tracking a few of them down. My little heart skipped a beat when I read the first post here, though, I'd kill to see them.

Might even take OV's tip about going to see them in the UK... Hmm...

Where'd you find the details, OP?

With regard to the name, I saw one of the guys involved that there is no right way to pronounce it, and you can say it anyway you want, as it's just an amalgamation of a few different words.

I've read that loads, but it still seems way too structured to be that random. With all the technology that goes into their music, it's a little too appropriate, I'm not sure :p

I'd say highly unlikely they'd play old material... agree though it would be feckin unreal to hear their early work live, a dream come true I would say.

Wow that is a great track. I really have to check out more of these guys, the Garbage EP is one album/EP I go back to regularly, very moving half hour of music and each track progresses to a different level as you listen through them.

What's the consensus here in relation to Confield? I never bought it as I heard it was difficult to enjoy but that it would eventually click and in some cases be considered the very best from Autechre. Interesting to read reviews on Amazon which very much reflect this... can't decide whether to hit add to basket or not though.

I've quoted a mixed bag of reviews below, some love it and some hate it.

Let's not get pretentious, let's not talk about micro-whatever and the hidden complexities - ignore all that, just know that this album is, perhaps, one of the greatest ever released.

Confield represents the most varied, while still cohesive, collection of tracks that Autechre have put out. I'll admit that, like a lot of the best music, it takes a while to get in to but it's certainly worth it. From the exquisitely minimalist opener, VI Scoise Poise, with its ball-bearing beats and soft synth strains to the progressively more frantic closer, Lentic Catachresis, this record is amazing.

Admittedly, it's not as overtly tuneful as their previous albums (maybe EP7 excepted) but there is nothing more beautiful than hearing the distorted synth sounds slowly break through on Pen Expers or the bell-like sounds on Parhelic Triangle gradually coalesce into a recognisable melody.

Another thing, this album sounds fantastic production-wise - pristine yet still rough where it needs to be, beautiful synths and satisfying beats (at least, where those percussive sounds can actually be called beats).

I'm treading well-worn ground when I say that this isn't the best place to start if you want to get into Autechre but, hell, it's a great place to finish.

    (REAL NAME)
It's a commonly stated fact that after a fairly lengthy period of absorbing and digesting Autechre's music you will just "get it", and it is absolutely true.

I've been dipping in and out of their albums for a while now, and it is here on arguably their most harsh, cold and difficult album that i have found that so called Autechre nirvana.

The tracks are long and at first repetetive and noisy, but unlike any other artist out there once you understand the structure of the sounds you're hearing you will revel in the length of the tracks and the sustained pleasure you get from feeling the buried melodies and rythms. At first you won't believe that 2 men can put together this kind of fabled new angle of musicianship that manipulates your mind in such ways, and you'll believe people like me are hearing what we want to hear and don't know what we're talking about, but give it a chance.

There is nothing in the music world that compares to the sense of elation that washes over you as you suddenly grasp each and every thread of this seemingly 'white' noise. It can literally take your breath away and make you gasp on the spot. You'll believe the mind, and Autechre, are wonderful things.

dont let yourself guide by your first listen... this is a new way of comunication and it needs to be learnt before rating it.
i am a big autechre fan... so you may think o well as he is a fan he wont say anything bad about it... ok you are right... but this album is just incredible... not easy listening thats true... but give it a try... after a few weeks it will come one of your favourites, this happened to me, i never thought any album will beat chiastic slide or lp5 but this one does...much more radical than ep7... even. music will never stop progressing if there are people like autechre

Having heard Autechre on previous ambient compilations albums, I thought I knew what I was buying. However, with Confield I was sorely disappointed. If you can imagine the sound of a million ants scurrying about their nest and amplify this a million-fold, you're almost getting the intensely repetitive sound that exemplifies Confield. There is barely any melodic composition to this album and it is no more than an exercise in drumbeats, aural pain and listener endurance. The album quite possibly encapsulates the sounds experienced by a paranoid schizophrenic's appreciation of cocaine-fuelled monkeys playing a giant drumset. Mince.

By P. Hogg (UK) - See all my reviews

This album is so much up its own arse that i cant even give a track by track review. Since 1997 Autechre have gone down this sparse avenue leaving all the fans of tri repetae, amber and incabula behind. There is the odd flash over brilliance now and then but you are the bored and irritated with the dross in between to care. Believe me i am a massive fan of Autechre but i content myself to listening to all the albums from Incubula to Chaistic Slide where the majority of fans feel there best music exists. Dont waste your money

Having peaked with the gorgeous math'n'bass of LP5, Autechre started their slow, sorry slide into irrelevance with this turgid headache of an album. Almost unlistenable at points, this is electronica for pretentious art students who see artists who write proper melodies as sell-outs.

By A. Winfield "Palimpsest" (UK) - See all my reviews

There is no denying that this album is not for everyone. Infact most people will listen to this and hate it. However, I am one of the lucky people who happens to love it. Here is a description for each track:
    1. VI Scose Poise - Great opening track which leads into Cfern superbly. Sounds like a ball skittering around throughout, with a nice melody fitted into parts. ****

    2. Cfern - Excellent track with more traditional beats than anything else on this album. Ambient melodys and layers throughout. *****

    3. Pen Expers - The best track on the album, and one of the most satisfying pieces of music I have ever heard. Extremely harsh beats throughout and a synth that drifts underneath, over and in between for the majority. The synth is utterly gorgeous. *****

    4. Sim Gishel - A decent track with bass line that grows on the ear. Not the most melodic track, but a refreshing listen. ***

    5. Parhelic Traingle - A deceptively fantastic track that has perfected malfunctioning beats throughout. The melody that creeps in is cold but beautiful. The moment the beats fade out to leave the melody alone is stunning. *****

    6. Bine - A great piece of music that has bassy, echoing beats and a nice underlying melody. ****

    7. Eidetic Casein - Dangerously close to being a letdown. Listeners who love every other track will probably wonder why this was put on the same album. It's OK but not a patch on the rest. **

    8. Uviol - On first listen this track is not overly satisfying. However when you discover the beautiful melody and its wavy ambience, you will love it. *****

    9. Lentic Catachresis - It is likely that 1/100 people will like this, but I happen to be one of the lucky ones. A staggering achievement in drum programming, and one of the most abstract pieces of music I have ever heard. A blistering way to end an album. *****

If you like this, you will also like Chiastic Slide and Draft 7.30 by Autechre.

Confield is my favourite. It's not like Amber or anything, and it's harder to get into. But when you get into it, it's brilliant.

I say do whatever you want to get to listen to it, but don't give it your final opinion until you've given it a few good listens.

I don't think an mp3 off the web somewhere will satisfy my quest on this one so reckon I'll grab a copy and decide for myself!

going to see these in France, not expecting much as their last few live shows have been all about their latest stuff, brilliant but you just cant groove to it,tis a pity, i question why they are releasing another album as diverse as quadra!! its just not listenable, complex stuff but at the end of the day we all wanna sit down to listenable stuff, just my 2 cents

I heard from someone who got a promo of the new album that its their best for many years and very listenable again - this was from someone how also had no time for Quaristice. So on that basis I'll be definitely getting to the gig in April.
