Anyone hear any rumors about O'Driscoll going with Cheika to Australia?

    Complete, total and utter nonsense.

There is a small chance that if he doesn't retire at the end of the World Cup, he might spend one year in another club, but even that is highly unlikely.

    Link or GTFO.

The chances of that happening are nil, nada, zero.

He might leave after the World Cup but there is no chance that the IRFU would let him leave before hand.

I'd say he's the type that would like to play in another country for the experience but not now.

I thought it was Kearney, Heaslip, Fitzgerald, D'Arcy and Nacewa?

This thread title is diliberately misleading and should be changed.

Would they really all go this close to the World Cup?

I mean even a one year deal to be back beforehand could see them lose their places in the Irish team except Heaslip IMO. He's the one player out of those four that has the least competition.

It would be one hell of an experience for them though. I mean if you're going to go someplace new and exciting like Australia, it's probably better to do it when you're young.

I thought it was Kearney, Heaslip, Fitzgerald, D'Arcy and Nacewa?

i heard this too, from a highly reliable but uncited source.

I also heard that cian healy was leaving for toulon.

Any chance he'd take Hurley,Williams,Murphy and Buckley instead?

Interesting if true. I could see that working out for Ireland in the long-term if it goes ahead.

Healy is not the finished article yet and whilst his loose play his top notch. His scrummaging potential could be exploited further as they really take it seriously in France.

Still though if all of these potential signings are true and Cheika is raiding Leinster, they'll have to buy a new team.:p

Heh, we'll have to wait and see.

If it wasn't for the World Cup, I'd actually expect a few to go for a little while.

The other option of course, is a sabbatical like the SH players.
Any chance he'd take Hurley,Williams,Murphy and Buckley instead?

Buckley to France would be great for him I reckon.

Prehaps we could buy Munster

Although - that would leave us with an aging team thats past its peak :p

so maybe we should just buy back our original team and then dominate the magners league, Heineken cup and newly formed World Club championship for the next decade.....yup that sounds like the best idea

Well I was kinda taking the piss.

There's no way you could afford all of them really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 910 ✭✭✭Ciaran-Irl

I heard that Munster is being sold to some business Tycoon in Beijing. Musgrave Park & Thomand Park are being dismantled and airshipped out there. All the players are changing their names, but they will be paid 100 million each per year.

Reliable source, but I can't disclose the source.

    Big deal around here, me.

All that will be coming to an end next season with the salary cap intro.

    Not with the salary cap.

At this stage those boys are all coming up to the 500k a year mark. Possibly even more.

O'Driscoll will finish his career with Leinster, he won't leave, even after the world cup. He needs to finish his career here to avail of the tax cuts and he can prolong his career by staying here given he won't be playing every game.

    I know.

I was making the general point that if any of those players left for the SH it wouldn't be for money.

....what the hell? has everyone gone cabin crazy from being snowed in or what? Similarly and in keeping with the cast iron sourcing on the thread thus far; Mrs Miggins down the road told me that Johnny Wilkinson is set to sign for Cork Con and Victor Matfield is moving to Steaua Bucharest. Paul O'Connell is joining a lady boy troupe in bangkok (maybe I dreamt that, phnarr) and Eddie O Sulllivan's a shoe in for the Leinster job.....daft, daft, daft....all of the above are about as likely to happen as BOD moving to Oz or indeed becoming the wizard of same.....

Makes no sense. Cricket and bowls are still around. they're first for the chop.

EDIT: Try not to pick on League it's just a small parochial sport. Kind of like the GAA in a way.;)

(I don't actually mind League and there are aspects to it that I find more appealing than Union.)

My God, what have I started?? This 'rumor' came from a news programme two weekends ago suggesting that a number of big name rugby players might be poached by Cheika when he leaves for Melbourne. Big franchise, loadza money! Seems some others heard of it so it not a scurrilous rumor as one person intimated. I don't reckon he would go in case he missed out on 2011 World Cup. Will be his swansong so I reckon he will want to stay around.

True. Although if you look at what Gits or Elsom'd be on it's probably the same as up here. In Ireland certainly.

I wouldn't expect them to, given that. But take Rob Kearney, he's 23 or so. In 2012 he'll be 25/26. Would be an ideal time for him to take a break from rugby oop North and play in teh SH for a season. Change of scenery/lifestyle/etc also, you'd play a lot less rugby for a year.

I agree that it's fairly ludicrous, but then again, the likes of Carter and Elsom's one year sabbaticals show that it's not impossible for players to go away for a year. I know they both went for money, but at the end of the day, would a season playing for the Waratahs do the likes of Keith Earls, Fitzgerald or Kearney any harm? Certainly they might not see it that way.

Also, Kearney's got contract negotiations coming up doesn't he? Wouldn't hurt for him to look like he's flirting with more than one team.

Tis basically common sense gone wild. Cheika's the ex-Leinster coach (in-waiting), Leinster have lots of good players, and Cheika might take over a rich club.

Lads, I have it on good authority that the O Driscoll story is actually true. His bird has been offered the role of Pippa in Home & Away and Drico is moving over there to be with her.

Exactly. If I were a professional rugby player, that's definitely what I'd do. Imagine being 25/26, living in Melbourne and playing Super 14 for a year or two? Or living on the Cote d'Azur in southern France? Amazing life experience, even if it does temporarily inhibit your international career.

No way. Union is basically non-existant in Melbourne and many believe it's a massive mistake establishing a fifth franchise there. Also, if it's controlled by the ARU then it may overstretch their already-thin and limited resources. The Rebels will definitely not have loadza money...

On the other hand, there have been rumours that they could be the first privately-owned team in Oz - anyone got any info on this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43 Maaa!

I also heard that the franchise would be a privately owned one which made it plausible that they would have the money to attract big names. Hopefully its all just conjecture and the boys will not be departing. Mind you I heard BOD was learning the didgeridoo!

True. Although if you look at what Gits or Elsom'd be on it's probably the same as up here. In Ireland certainly.

Their two superstars make just about the same as our top internationals, depending on the currency rate e.g. 400-500k (open to correction).

Of course, Gits and Elsom are being so much to keep them there for the international team. Any Irish capped lad obviously couldn't play for Oz and would therefore lose a larger part of his salary. He'd be paid a club wage that would be nowhere near what the above two make in Oz.
