a team at 4-0up with 10mins left, is a fairly good bet (percentage wise)
but stake amount vs odds was terrible if the unexpected happened.

which it did, if the story is true that lad could be suicidal.

    What fairness?

A young lad loses £4,400 and in all fairness it's funny - don't know what world you are living in pal, but in mine that's seen as an idiotic and selfish comment to make about someone who has suffered that misfortune.

I feel for the poor lad and I hope he learns from his mistake.

He tried to win £44 with a risk of £4400.
He taught it was free money and money for nothing and then posted it on a forum looking for sympothy.

I'd bet that he has made that sort of bet before and will do again.
Stupidity is an understatement for his bet.

Undoubtedly the lad does this on a regualar basis and has been stung. I don't think anyone who makes that bet can afford to lose that amount, if they could then they wouldn't need to earn £44 on a football match.

At the end of the day it isn't funny.

I remember good few years ago a guy lost 125,000 on tennis match all to win 250 quid at the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭aidan24326

The guy made a stupid mistake but I don't think it's funny.

As much as it was a dumbass bet, the chances of Mali coming back from 0-4 down with 15 mins to go were absolutely minsiscule. When the clock ticked into the 87th minute it was still 4-1, so to lose the bet from there was ridiculously unlucky. Hopefully he'll have learned a valuable lesson though. Regardless of what you stand to win, whether it's 44 pounds or 44 grand, you never bet more than you can reasonably afford to lose.

If anyone remembers the Tottenham-Man Utd game a few years back, when Spurs were 3 up at halftime and lost 5-3? One of the big bookies (cant rem which one) reportedly took an online bet at halftime of 16,000 pounds at 1/16 for Spurs to win. United got 5 in the second half. Ouch.

"Hello young Jonathan. This is Mabi De Almeida the Angolan manager. I am very sorry to hear about your current situation. We here at the Angolan football association are both embarrassed and disgusted by the disastrous 12 minutes that evidently cost you a lot of your hard earned money. We are very happy to inform you that we are 100% committed to making this situation better. Thanks to the hard work of first team coach zizi makololooo and team doctor Kawabi Tuzububu we have come to an arrangement where we can compensate you.

Star Striker Manucho has verbally agreed to give you his most prized asset. A signed Hull city shirt from last season. Sadly Manucho has lost the shirt where he scored his only Hull goal against Fulham so he will donate his second most prized shirt (the shirt where he took a shot that was only 5 yards wide of the goal). We hope this helps you a little."

    blimey....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 951 ✭✭✭Verance

Sorry lads, but wasn't this a value bet? Surely if he placed this bet 1000 times it would lose less than ten times?? Think of the lucky people who got on at 100/1!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭nice1franko

Spot on, Verance. In reality, this is happening way less than 1 in a 100 hundred times so it's a +EV bet in my book. Can anyone even remember a game where a side has come from 4-0 down to equal within the final 12-15 minutes??

Where he went wrong is: he put his entire bank on it. A silly -but not uncommon- mistake.

If he's a serial 101 backer with his entire bank then this was inevitable really but, still, I think he's getting more grief/ridicule than he deserves. Specially from his own, I'd expect it from non-gamblers obviously.

    Some stupid comments here tbh.

    A) If you read the thread properly (or at all!) you would have found that the guy "did the sums wrong" and thought he was going to win GBP440. Yes it was stupid for all the reasons listed but having no sympathy only reflects badly on you and actually contributes little.

    B) The odds of 1/100 are wrong (IMO). Out of the most recent 100 international matches that have had the score of 4-0 with 12 mins to go, I'd be very suprised to see a comeback. Having said that, it doesn't attempt to justify the bet but its a bet you could make with buckets of confidence. (Obviously not with ALL you money BUT!!...he technically thought he was getting odds of 1/10)

Ah right. I only skimmed through the a few posts on the first page of the thread (cos it's huge) but in the OP he says:
I have a problem. I can't help it, 4-0 up in the 78th minute offering 1.01 (1% profit for 12 minutes work, in non-betting talk). Fukking bent africans...

and then a few posts down it seems a mate of his offers condolences with
Im actually ****ing shellshocked John, The amount of times we have talked about these 1.01 **** ups and you do this.
Need any help mate im here.

So I was under the impression he knew full well what he was doing. Maybe he'd started telling little white ones to to try and save face or something?

Anyway, let this be a lesson to all you kids out there....... don't play in African football markets!! :pac:

So why didn't he take a tenner and make two bets for draw/lose.

Would have guaranteed 30odd quid on the win and windfall for loss/draw.

Someone please tell me it wasn't that simple :p

There's not a chance in hell this was corrupt. We'd know all about it if it was.

African Nations Cup has turned into a good tournament with some of the world's best playing in it. To suggest corruption is to go straight to sterotyping people. This is Grade A football that's live on TV and very heavily monitored. If it was corrupt, Betfair would have already announced suspicious betting patterns and bookies the same.

Was there not a match in League 1 or Championship that went 4-0 at half time and then ended 4-4 a couple of weeks ago? I don't see anybody calling fix on that one which was a game of much lower profile and which wasn't on TV.

And the recent 4-4 draw was between Peterborough and Cardiff.

Mathmatically speaking, the odds of the team scoring 4 goals in that time, must be miniscule, so I'd imagine the odds were good in that regard. If he placed say 300 similar bets and won 299, he'd be making a healthy profit.

However, he didn't. He put all his eggs in one basket and bet money he couldn't afford to lose, which was foolish.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭nice1franko

That's because they had the whole second half of the game to catch up and not just the last 12 minutes after being scoreless for the first 78!

    There's a big difference.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭myflipflops

That's because they caught up in whole second half of the game - not just the last 12 minutes, as in this case. There's a BIG BIIIIIIIIIG difference.

Indeed, leaving it to the last 12 minutes makes it was LESS likely that it's a fix. Most fixes are 1-0, 2-0 wins where an odds against price gets incredibly heavily backed pre match and then strolls home quite easily. A good example would be Bury 2 - 0 win against Accrington Stanley on the last day of the league 2 seaons ago. Massive move for Bury and they win at a stroll with a penalty and a 2nd half goal. That was one of the last English games to have an investigation into it and players found guilty i think. This game had no big gamble and no reported suspicious betting either pre match or in running. Letting a 4-1 lead slip in 12 minutes on purpose would be pretty obvious to spot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭nice1franko

    Yeah, ok, maybe you're right.

Regardless tho, the odds of a team coming back from 4-0 to level in the last 12 minutes of play are pretty slim. An awful lot slimmer than the 1/100 price he got which, IMO, still makes Calamity John's bet a good one (his bank roll management sucks though).

I'm not referring specifically to the qulaity of football on offer (although i think there's lots of good football played), i'm looking at it from a gambling perspective.

There is nearly 6 million traded on Betfair on this Ivory Coast game with a couple of minutes to play. That makes it Grade A in my book.

no,it just highlights the huge gambling epidemic there is in the world, just because it's on the tv doesn't make it grade A,it's pure sheite bar a couple of games,
