I'm seriously considering doing it this year. Hoping to get close to 50 minutes for it. :)

Have you done any running before now? If not, a good beginners program like Couch to 5k will help you to get started, and will get you to the point where you can go into a beginners 10k program (Hal Higdon's novice 10k program is what I used for my first 10k). It's also worth entering a 5k at some stage while you're training to get an idea of how your training is progressing, and to get you used to the race atmosphere.

Also, make sure you have a good pair of shoes. Go to a running-specific store to get fitted for a pair that's appropriate to your foot type. In terms of what to wear - it really depends on the temperature and what you're comfortable with. Wicking fabrics are a better choice than cotton, they're less likely to hold a lot of moisture close to your skin. JJB have some decent running bargains at the moment, last time I was there they had some nice Nike shorts for €8.50 and some tops going relatively cheaply too. Also watch Aldi and Lidl for running gear - when they stock it they are particularly good value.

Do be warned that race day last year was quite warm (25c-ish, if I remember correctly), and the weather tends to be pretty good on race day in general, so be aware of that and drink at the water stations on the course. The race is VERY congested too (~40k participants), so it's not an optimal choice for hitting a target time (especially for first timers who cannot register as a runner (sub 60 mins for 10k previously) or a "fast jogger" - sub-85 mins for 10k previously), don't be too disappointed if you don't hit your goal time on the day because of the congestion.

And join us over on the Athletics/Running/Triathlon forum :)

wow thanks, that's really helpful! :) i don't think i would've tried running this year, no way, i'm so unfit! on the website florawomensminimarathon.ie/, it has a list of schedules, i was going to do schedule 2 (runners- beginner) but would go at a slow pace or even walk some of the distance.

and thanks for linking the programs, i think i'll give one of them a shot (i would literally be couch to 5k, or couch to something anyway :D)
