at the moment the college has made no decision about it and is open for classes on Monday. The advice i was given by course leader was just to tune into wlr and keep and eye on the wit website for updates

all right smart arse. we still have a student body and dangerous foot paths etc! have fun getting up in the bad weather!

The college will defo be open next week and the lecture are due back, as for classes going ahead.. too hard to tell now, but i would imagine if you missed monday / tueday due to bad weather your probley not going to get any hassle for it.. there is bound to be lecuture not able to make it in next week. If they do decided not to go ahead with classes it will be posted on the wit website over the weekend & probley on the radio too!

It could only happen at WIT that it will stay open when almost everywhere else will be closed.

****ing joke if it's not closed until at least Wednesday like.

I've been down in waterford for the last week with work and the weather isn't too bad really. And unless you're driving backroads all the way then the roads will be fine.

Don't over react about the weather just cos you want a week off college lads!

no overreaction when ders an inch of ice on the road outside my door and a load a snow on de path's!!!!:D

its not an over reaction, the schools are shut so colleges should be aswell, we all know most lecturers wont turn up but it would be nice if it was said officially ha

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭homolumo

hard to know how it will pan out. the amount of snowfall is expected to be highest in the SE but could vary widely. if the snow is significant I imagine WIT will be closed. we will get rain/sleet anyway which means the roads will be treacherous so there may not be many people able to get to WIT esp those from outside the county. just have to wait and see.

well cork isnt too bad with the snow as of yet(still very icy), but things will change 2morow, but tbh WIT isnt alone, the education minister shut all schools, but didnt say anything about colleges so i assume every single college is going to be open/having lectures

i hope its closed!!! im doin an adult education course so I study by night and its a joke when you come out from the 3hrs of college and the car is frozen!!!

yeah its much worse up in dublin, UCC/CIT arent closed AFAIK, its handy to have the time table etc before hand, and the weather is expected to be really bad sunday/monday/tuesday, tuesday being the worst day

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 neddy112

WIT should be closed as should most college for at least a few days! how do they expect people livin out the country to get back down with the roads! and as well as that there is frozen water pipes in our student house so no heating, toliets or shower! not a chance of going back with this weather

looking at the current forecasts Waterford could be one of the worst affected by snow. to be honest I can see a lot of people missing Week 1 Semester 2.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 90 ✭✭FV-Emperor

WIT isn't alone in not postponing their start of semester, so anyone else who wants to knock the college, just think before you shout your mouth off.

I reckon though it is a bit poor that no college has addressed the situation by even saying what they're thinking. Bat O'keefe came out and said the Primary and secondary schools are shut so why are the colleges themselves not saying anything?

All the people who commute to college and get buses in are going to be in difficulty anyway. Its real difficult for me to get down from kilkenny, I hear the main roads are good but the other ones that I have to travel on to get to the main roads are CRAP, ice is real bad. Can anyone say what its like at the moment in Waterford, ice and snow wise?

I live near college, all roads are grand really small bit of ice in quieter roads thats all. All main roads and commonly used roads are perfect.

snow here in Waterford this morning as forecasted, not much, a nice covering, more on the way.

Any news on whether WIT is opening tomorrow?
Whats roads like to WIT from Manor Village?
    Thanks in advance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

Roads are treacherous and I'd really advise against anyone travelling down. It would be irresponsible for the college to open tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭MitchKoobski

WIT remains open tomorrow, just came out on WLR.
keep an eye on the actual website though cos they could always change their mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

I'm actually amazed at that. I'd still recommend that you don't travel too great a distance to get down though. I'd imagine that the first few days will be woefully disorganised anyway and you won't be missing much!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 724 ✭✭✭shapez

All main roads a slushy but driveable. Roads in housing estates are bad and people should drive/walk very carefully. Back roads are pretty dangerous and will become worse over night. If you are drving from Cork, you should be ok on the main roads if you are careful, likewise with other surrounding counties like Wexford, Carlow, Tipperary, Kilkenny.

Unfortunately the WIT is open tomorrow. However, if you live in the countryside and just cannot make it in. Stay at home because you can be sure that WIT staff and lecturers will be in the same situation.

You should check the main WIT webpage www.wit.ie for updates later today.

just announced on wlr open as usual if anything changes will be notified by text.....thought we already established SU knows nothing :P

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 24,056 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sully

SU website? That yoke? Seriously now, that thing seems to be on a mission to get worse every year! The SU sent out a text saying its currently open but as usual dont drive if its not safe to do so.

I think the text thing WLR were on about is not the college in general but specific courses (call the switchboard, it says it will send out texts to a certain group of students).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 236 ✭✭shanemul

The SU are being kept in the loop and being told what the college is doing. How do you think they have the update on their website and WIT don't

Shame because id say not many people take any notice of the WITSU website. Its never been used properly and looks like a 6th class kids painting :p (and thats an improvement on previous years!)

WIT should update their news website for those not looking on here or WITSU.

And the 3 lads at the top ofthe page like heros! lol :D

I can't believe they're keeping it open. The roads out by my place are lethal, I doubt i'll make it anywhere tomorrow. 4 cars crashed on my road at the moment.
