Had -11 on the way into work this morning (Gaydon, UK) but down the road in Oxfordshire they had -17C!

Funny situation (although potentially not funny) going home yesterday evening along the M40, the inside 2 of the 3 total lanes were cleared of snow and traffic was moving about 70mph. Some plonker in a C class coupe decided it wasn't quick enough and pulled into the outside lane with about 5 inches of snow at 80mph and ended up pointing the wrong way kissing the armco. Tool.
    ;)

Isn't that one of the places where it gets so cold that there are enclosed bridges between buildings so people don't have to go outdoors?

Yea, a lot of the buildings in the city have heated walkways between them. Twas -26 a couple of days ago. Now that was chilly stuff. Whats worse is that over christmas it heated up to just above freezing, melting some of the snow, which of course has now frozen leaving nasty icy roads and paths. Great craic!

Be careful of yer diesel cars. The lows temps past -15C will turn your diesel to waxy type substance. Don't try to start your car as you could damage it :/

They've been selling them for years. They even throw in a free car when you buy one.

Depends on the manufacturer's additives I'd say

    from a google search
Like most fuels, diesel is a mix of hydrocarbons, and the components have different freezing points. For Number 2 diesel, as the ambient temperatures drop toward 32 degrees F (0 degrees C), it begins to cloud, due to the paraffin in the fuel solidifying. As the temperatures drop below 32 F, the molecules combine into solids, large enough to be stopped by the filter. This is known as the gel point, and generally occurs about 15 degrees F (-9.5 degrees C) below the cloud point.
This wax then forms a coating on the filter which results in a loss of engine power. The same thing happens on starting an engine when the temperature is below freezing. The filter becomes almost instantly coated with wax - usually, enough fuel gets through to allow the engine to idle, but not attain operating RPM. There are two common ways to overcome this: one is a diesel additive, the other is a fuel heater.
In Alaska and other colder climates, lorries are running regularly at minus 51 degrees or lower so as you see it depends on additives and heating but to freeze as in turning solid you would need laboratory conditions as nature cannot go cold enough to freeze to a low enough temperature.

I need some compost as soon as the thaw comes, will pobably drop into B&Q and get 3 bags and leave them in the boot, to help with the traction.
I have to negotiate a small incline to get out in the morning and at the moment its a nightmare, all the FWD cars just zip up, no problem ! This morning an almost 60 yr old neighbour had to give me a bit of a push to get up the incline !
