Lots of people seem to enjoy this series on RTÉ2 last year.... not me, but a lot of people did.

Just heard an ad on the radio promoting it for Sunday night. Just checked the TV listings and got this:
    Raw
    Season 2 Episode 1

    RTE One 9:30pm-10:30pm (1 hour ) Sun 10 Jan

    New series.
New owner Fiona Kelly prepares to reopen the restaurant, and hires Geoff as head chef. He sets about trying to recruit his former colleagues, including his boyfriend Pavel, short-tempered cook Jojo, her brother Shane, and laid-back barman Bobby - but it quickly becomes clear that some of the staff are finding it difficult to put their old disagreements behind them.
Drama, starring Aisling O'Sullivan, Damon Gameau, Kristof Pavel, Charlene McKenna and Keith McErlean

I didn't mind Raw. It was slick and well produced by RTE standards albeit a bit of mindless froth at the end of the day. Did anyone notice the blonde girl that used to be in was the wife in Moon?

Why on earth are they moving it to RTE 1?

It'll have to be suitably watered down or it just won't wash. Some of the reasons why it was a good as it was the first time will not suit its new audience at all.

Every time the ad for this comes on and we get a clip of someone giving out to a girl for quitting her job and she replies "I don't belong there, I belong in the kitchen" I think it's hilarious. I always smile at my girlfriend and tell her to listen to the girl on the telly.

Does anyone know where I can watch the first series? Can't find it on YouTube!!

    Thanks

Because they have no faith in RTE TWO and they don't understand their audience.

Indeed and it suit RTE TWO on Tuesday nights.

Garbage. Some of the worst scriptwriting and acting i've seen in a while. It's Fair City with less sets, less actors and swearing.

Dr Kathy or whatever new name is doesn't seem right. Not sure what exactly is wrong, but there's something.

The whole thing seems a bit boring.

They've basically ruined what used to be a good thing on RTE 2.

They are just setting up the series. I would never have said this show was up to much anyway.

Was pretty poor alright, I thought last seasons acting and style were a lot better. Most of the "funny" bits were cringey. The new waiter was amusing though, mainly for his crude line delivery

It was ok, I'll stick with it.

It feels strange being on on a Sunday.

I didn't think it was too bad now, a few good performances, mainly from Jo-Jo, her bro and the foreign waiter. The new boss was a bit disappointing, her speech on opening night was far from inspirational, it was badly written and badly delivered. There's definitely potential though and I will continue to watch it.

Yeah the speech on the opening night was bad, about as inspirational as a slap across the face with a wet fish.

Her "haggling" in the market was so cliched

Anyone know what the song played in the middle of the program was? Driving me nuts

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 592 ✭✭✭Black Magic

    Which one!

Very disappointed with tonight - seemed to lack the pace and energy of the first series.

It was a bit too convenient that they all managed to get back to the same restaurant.

So obvious also the series will revolve around Bobby falling for the main girl character, yet this time she will fall for the new guy working there.

    Very disappointing.

I thought it was OK as it was reinventing the show in the absence of the main characters from series one. It did however seem as if Dr. Cathy Costello had come back to life and decided to buy a restaurant, and that surprised me because I've seen Aisling O'Sullivan in a couple of plays and I never thought it was Cathy on stage. I am interested as to who the blonde is.

What I really didn't like was the market scene, the ridiculous mini plot over the lease that was resolved within 5 minutes, and the arrest scene. I did like that Dublin looked much duller than the last series (although that might just have been the weather), which was certain appropriate.

Pavel and Geoff were the most unconvincing 'couple at work' I've ever seen.

A quiet office moment, where Pavel gives Geoff a touching gift, and he plods out the door as if he was delivering it on someone else's behalf?

I know most couples who work together have strict rules about PDAs in the workplace, but there was just something missing there.

Last season they did a fairly good job of handling them, but maybe it was easier then cos there was tension/friction in the relationship. No doubt some will be reintroduced and make them a bit more interesting again.

Ahem...anyway...on a more general note, I totally get the criticism this show recieves...but it's still a big guilty pleasure for me :pac:

The one that's also in that ad? It's apparently Neopolitan Dreams by Lisa Mitchell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXtidnWQHRQ

If it was the one where they were showing Tiny (think he's called) painting the outside of the building I'd like to know it myself....

Maybe it was the track from the Surf ad - was expecting them to start doing the washing and plug the product!

Was hooked on the first series; definately needs the old 'whoosh' noise of the pan going up in flames, before and after the commercial break - as per series one (not season one, as that phrase is beginning to get on my nerves!)

The location shots of Dubbalin buses and the Luas are becoming a bit of a cliche. My tuppence, etc.

PS: Anyone know what sort of camera it's shot on?

If it's the one that's playing when the guy who used to work in the bank (sorry, name escapes me now) walks in off the street and is then heard playing on the radio inside, it's Love Etc. by the Pet Shop Boys.

Total layman here, but it's always intrigued me how different types of show have different types of look, and how they give them a different feel.

Like shows like, say, Fair City, or Coronation Street or Eastenders seem to be shot in one way. Sort of in a fairly 'plain', direct way.

And then shows like this and other dramas on BBC or The Clinic seem to be shot another way, given a different treatment. Maybe more filmic.

The latter is way more to my taste.

Same here, LookingFor. It appears to be High Definition cameras or something, and a different sound quality too, but it adds something to it definitely...

    Anyone enlighten us?

Like most here, thought it was ok. The new owner wasn't great, think someone else mentioned the speech bit, that was just shockingly bad.

Surprised they started and finished the lease bit within 10mins, that story could've gone on for a few episodes. It was actually a really interesting twist, and they just ruined it by wrapping it up as soon as they threw it in.

Overall though it was alright, will definitely keep watchin it.

I thought it was alright. Usual decent enough Irish drama, starring the usual suspects that appear in all these things.

I thought it was a lot poorer than it was last season.

Now I know season one had its cringey moments but this episode seemed piled high with them and far too convenient (and unbelievable plotting). All the staff come back within the first half hour. Bobby goes from "leave me alone" to "I want us to be best mates" in 2 seconds with no visible reason for his change.

Too many 'speeches' and 'moments'. Perhaps moving it to RTE 1 has meant they have to bring it in a new direction but it seemed like it's lost any edge that it had at all.

Shame really because the director has done good work in the past but the script was the main thing that let it down.

Charlene McKenna looked her usual gorgeous little self though. ;)

I thought that this was to show how unlikely a couple they are and Shane's discussion with Pavel after being told he wasn't part of the team by Geoff.

What annoyed me more was some of the cringy dialog like "Are you ready to be taken out of your comfort zone." and "Yeah, Bring it on". Ok the auzzy character can get away with "Bring it on".

They could at least have had some cursory mention of Shelly Conn's character and her husband and why they left, apologies if I missed it.

Didn't like the opening credits, preferred the cold open of last season's version, and I felt there were too many songs played during the show

It was seeing that dialogue in the ad that made me decide not to watch it. There seemed to be only two possibilities. Either it was a deadpan satire about two nadwits who talked in cliches from five years ago, or the script was a clumsy mess. I bet on the latter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,316 ✭✭✭Reginald P. DuM

You are not too far wrong Meeja, the script is the principal flaw in Raw. I will give it a chance to improve however, being the optimist that I am.

As a minor aside I think it should also be remembered that much of the speak in modern Irish workplaces has descended into this cliche drivel you speak of. We touch base daily as we go forward, in the search for continous improvement, ever striving to go beyond our comfort zones to increase the profitibility of our organisations. Etc etc. Raw shouldnt be any different should it? Don't answer that!!

As for Ep02, bring it on I say. ;)
