This is mainly towards students but also to anyone else who's moving or planning on moving country.

So are you going to get a job in Ireland after your degree or would you prefer to work in a different country.

I myself want to get out of Ireland as soon as college is over. There's no way I'm living here the rest of my life.

always thought i'd love to work abroad when i get my degree, and travel around, see as much as i can. there are loads of places i want to visit! I would still hope to settle in Ireland though, parents can just about turn on the television let alone work skype. Want to be close to my nieces and nephews too :)

I honestly can't wait to get out of this country.
There isn't enough opportunity here in my desired field, so I'll probably move away as soon as college is over.

I had dreams of travel and possible moving when I was in college, but out almost 4 years now and been in this job since the week after I finished my exams (Stupid Celtic Tiger). I like what i'm doing but i'm 24 and I don't want to miss out on travelling the world so I really want to start saving and take at least a year out.

It's very hard to do once you have a gf, renting an apartment, car, job....all the way to grown up crap. Almost wish I had taken a big loan, delayed it by a year and done all my travelling. Would have it mostly paid off and all by now.

My job brought me and my young familly here three years ago. I think it is a great country - I know its a bit crowded around Dublin, but there are some fantastic places, the people are generally very friendly, and its a great place to bring up kids.

I appreciate the problems currently faced by this country, and it will take some time for it to pull through. However these things go in cycles and it will get better.

I, for one, would happily see the rest of my days out in Ireland.

I lived out of Ireland for a year, while I enjoyed it it, it wasn't for me and imo did not compare with life in Ireland so I plan if atall possible to live here. I actually hate the thought of having to move away again.

I do like visiting places though and even a few months somewhere through work(which is possible) would be enjoyable but not permanently abroad.

i like it but i really miss living in countries with proper summers. It's the main gripe I have with here, the weather in summer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

    I am.

I stopped threatening to leave years ago because I realized that I was either talking out of my arse and would just stay, or I would end up flouncing off backpacking and come back and bore everyone into a coma with tales about it for years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,346 ✭✭✭✭homerjay2005

yes. IF i keep my current job, it allows me to travel alot and past few years ive spend 1/4 of the year in other countries, so that does me.

this country is no better one to be depressed however Ireland is a great country overall, despite our shocking weather.

Me too! I still love it here despite all the doom and gloom. Only the Irish get my sense of humour...id be fooked anywhere else!

No chance. Lived abroad for a year and a half. It was only then I realised how crap Ireland is. As soon as I'm qualified, I'm emigrating.

Seeing as I'm doing Irish in college, yes I plan to stay in Ireland. Stop knocking it so much it could be a lot worst!

Well I'm not too sure what I'll be doing with myself in the coming years. I'm trying to decide whether to continue my eduction (post-grad) or get a job. However if I want to work or continue study in my chosen area it'll most likely mean having to move abroad, probably to the UK. If I stick with either plan I reckon I'll be well into my 30's (I'm 22 now) before I could even have the oppurtunity to return home.

I want to be beginning to settle down/have a family by that age so whether or not I come back will be dictated by personal, and maybe career, circumstances. Travelling's all well and good and I hope to do of much as it as I can when I'm young but tbh Ireland's my home and I couldn't imagine anywhere else I'd like to get old and raise my family!!

Unless I get a job when I am qualified then I am out of here.

Yeah I got some friends in Amsterdam, so once I qualify I'll prb head over there for a couple of years anyway.

 at the people that says Irelands bad. We actually have it fairly well here, people like to complain about nothing.

That might be true, but sure nearly everyone from all over the world thinks where they grew up is the biggest kip ever. :p

Forget to add that I'd like to bolt it out of here when I have some bit of an education in a few years.

I always thought that I'd stay here but I'm honestly not so sure anymore.

A large part of the early section of my career involves a lot of further training and exams (if I stick with my degree) and it just seems to be that little bit more difficult to get on the relevant training schemes here. I'd probably have more luck in England/America/Australia.

I think I will. I want to go into running a trecking stables for tourist and locals and that can be done anywhere. Why go through the hassle of moving when you would get as good here? For me anyway.

I lived in Korea for a year and a half teaching English, came back home to do my masters in July 2008. I always thought it would be great to go back out and visit some friends I have over there but thought I would have to wait for a few years to save up for it.

However having not being able to find a job here I am going back out to my old job at the end of February for another 12 months, so if you guys make it to japan to teach English (I prefer Korea, free apartment, free flights to and from and better food) you can give me a shout and I will pop over for a boards meet up :)

It depends what Irelands like when i finish college, if i really can't find a job i might go to America and stay with family there. I wouldn't mind living here the rest of my life though.

I'd move to the states, it's got a lot of companies I'd like to work for but the thing that stops me is their barbaric approach to health-care.

And the serious lack of annual leave. A mate of mine only has 10 days of annual leave a year!
I'd leave Ireland if the opportunity presented itself

left last year for a while and Im off again soon hopefully. just need to brush up on some language skills so i can work and im out of here. id come back to live here in the future though but right now, its not making me happy.

I doubt I'll ever move back. And I don't feel any way sad about that any more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭Misty Chaos

    I highly doubt it.

For one thing, I'd like to live in a country where drinking isn't fooking central to every blooding thing!

And I'd like to live somewhere that gets PROPER SEASONS, not the normal seemingly perceptual season of dullness that goes on in Ireland ( no, this record breaking cold snap doesn't count )

That and I only see limited opportunities in my field anyway once I finish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 561 ✭✭✭iguy

I would never leave Ireland,no matter what the circumstances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭OctavarIan

I'll have a fair idea next August what I'll be doing. Although it's all dependent on if I get a job after I'm finished in college. Opportunities in my field in this country are few.

I lived abroad for a year, came home last summer, before I left Ireland I thought I'd never come home,a few months into being away I sorta thought I wanted to come home and eventually did and its proven to be one of the worst decisions in my life,so as soon as I get the oppurtunity, save up and sort out loans I'll be gone.

These are not easy decisons to make,so make sure you think long and hard about what you're doing!

I will do uni here but I plan to spend no more than two years post-uni in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,370 ✭✭✭HalloweenJack

I'm currently getting ready to go on a one semester Erasmus in Madrid at the end of the month.

My long-term plans involve doing a post-grad in Manchester when I finish my degree in 2011 so that'd be another year away from here.

Hopefully, after that I'll have an idea of whether I want to leave Ireland.

Currently, I don't want to spend the rest of my life in Ireland. I have a love-hate relationship with the place.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,856 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

I'm gonna travel as much as possible whilst young and care-free, but when it comes to settling down and raising a family, I'll have to come back to Ireland. It's where all my family is, I couldn't raise a family of my own without that network.

If I had no family, then I'd certainly have no trouble living elsewhere.

I lived in London for 2 years and came back here in the Sumer of 2008 with a wonderful girl. I tried starting up my own business in IT and development and struggled for 18 months trying to make ends meet.

Despite the help of family members who were very good, I just wasn't making any money and I was living an unhappy existence which took it's toll on the relationship I had, eventually resulting in a breakup which was very sad.

I have decided to pull the plug on my business and try to get out as soon as I can as there is very little opportunity for someone with my skills.

If I could go back two years I would have a very serious chat with my younger self but hindsight is always a good thing. I think it's time to get my life back in order and at least take solace in the fact that I have learned a lot about life, love work and business.

I'm considering emigrating after college. I'm not bitter about living in Ireland or anything but it's too expensive and the weather really gets me down.
