Direct fired heaters

A church I go to has installed a direct-fired gas heating system. It replaced an indirect-fired gas unit which was there before. The new unit brings in 100% fresh air and blows it through ducts in the church. The place now reeks of gas, it's absolutely nauseating. Is this a the case with direct-fired heaters even when they're using fresh air, as opposed to the recirculating 'rocket'/'torpedo' heaters?
