Kettlebells

    Hi all
i'm a 27 year old female...been doing free weights at home now for about 4/5 weeks or so. I'm actually really enjoying it and I've got my own little routine going. Normally I do it twice, with a short rest in the middle and in total it lasts about 20 - 25mins. I tend to do this every other day.

I recently saw an infomercial on 'Kettleworx' and it got me interested in kettle bells. Does anyone know any good kettlebell DVD workout they would recommend? The reason I ask, is I've researched into the particular Kettleworx one and I get the impression while its good, its not particularly great.

I'm gonna invest in 2 and also a DVD but I've no real experience with them at all. In between the strength training i'm planning on just going for walks and I cannot get the inspiration to run for the life of me.

Oh btw, yes I'm looking to lose weight, but I have to say I love the feeling of being 'tighter' from the weights even if the scales say im the same! :(
So I guess my main objective would be to drop the pounds, but cutting a slimmer figure would be more important to me, even if this doesn't result in tens of pounds being dropped.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Aoife - i can't help with the DVD I'm afraid but I am in a similar position and, if you are Dublin-based, I noticed there is a Kettlebell workshop for females coming up at the end of January. I thought it looked like it could be quite good / useful! :) I haven't heard any feedback from their previous worskhops though.

Edit: I've absolutely no connection with the company just in case it sounds like I'm trying to plug it!

    Hey eclectichoney,
thanks for the info! But I'm too far away unfortunately, I'm from Wicklow. And I kind of like the idea of doing a workout at home, even though a workshop would probably be an ideal way to get proper form etc.

Another thing to note about these workshops is that the price includes a free 8kg kettle bell, which is a pretty decent deal. Thinking of going to the guys workshop myself. Could do with getting my form checked.

Aoife: You can get some good Ideas for workouts on Youtube. And if you Google or look on Amazon for Pavel Tsatsouline, he has some books and DVD's which seem to be well reviewed.

Best Regards & Happy New Year,

    M

I have a couple of pavels books and i cant say theyre much use.

The pictures are good, but stuff like a basic swing and a snatch is pretty hard to learn from step by step pictures.

If you can get to a class or workshop of some sort id reccomend it, otherwise just check out some videos on youtube or whatever, its fairly easy to get the hang of the basics if you start light.

right, i think i'm sorted on the vids (and along with some very kind board users, I should be up and running in a few days).
Ive ordered a few from amazon, coming from America (where I think the kettlebell is far more popular) so I was able to read tonnes of reviews.

Next question, I'm a 150lb female, 5ft 6inches and at the moment my dumbells that I work out with are 4.25 kilos each.
And I use these for the basic moves, tricep curls, squats, lunges etc.
However when Im doing my triceps i have to go down to 2 kilos, cuz i have very weak muscles here.
So....What size kettlebell should I go for? I'm thinking an 8 kilo one will do me ok. Seeing as I have some experience with lifting (not much, but I'm not a beginner).

Probably try Elverys first off, see if they have them there or head into town one weekend .

Just bought kettlegrips from Iron woodys. I was going to buy a 16, 24 and 32... I may have saved myself over €300

    Hi Aoife161

Would love you to post your typical workout as inspiration for another female starting out?

THis is one of the DVD's I got "10 Minute Solution: Kettlebell Ultimate Fat Burner".
I put it in the player tonight and did 3 routines (3 x 10mins). I can safely say.....I'm in bits. LOL.
I didn't think I'd work up as much of a sweat, but I was literally soaked by the end of the 30 mins.
So gonna keep up with this one for now and see how I get on. I still don't have a kettlebell but this DVD allows you to use either a kettle bell or a dumbell, so Im ok for the moment.

The DVD is easy to follow, but I would probably not have been able to do 3 routines on my very first attempt if I had not already been lifting. There are alot of squats! The last routine I did was specifically for the bum and thighs....I definitely felt the burn!

We'll see how I am tomorrow...hopefully not too stiff.

Go for at least a set of eights. Even if they feel heavy youll be used to them very quickly. To be honest youll be able for 12s for stuff like deadlifts almost straightaway. As long as your technique is good dont be afraid to go heavy.

Thats a bit presumptuous, have you tried ALL the kettlebells in the country?

    hey
thanks for the advice. but i wanted to know is it essential to get a set? I was thinking of just getting the one to start off, and taking it from there. From what I can see from my DVD i have, most of the traditional kettlebell moves involves just the 1 kettlebell.

Did the DVD again tonight, managed another 3 routines, feel bit sore because I was doing planks with the weight and also lunges . Hmmm....i can feel a twinge now...Not looking forward to tomorro!

A lot of moves only take one, but its good to have a set of whatever weight, I double up for almost half the stuff I do. Just to make you consider the weight you buy.. My first purchase was a single 20kg, bought cos I couldnt get a 16. At the time I was by no means strong.. Still not :), but I could swing, squat and deadlift it.. Dont underestimate your strength. And no, you wont bulk! .
