Its that time of the year again, when players play inter-county again. The tournaments that precede the League are the FBD League, the McKenna cup, O'Byrne cup the Walsh cup and maybe 1 more I am forgetting.

Any news from our own counties? Generally experimental teams are fielded but the season starts here. Soon enough we will be talking league then championship.

    Let the games begin:)

Well the whole shebang kicks off again today with the McGrath Cup, only the few absolute die hards (plus the Season of Sundays photographers) will be in attendance.

I have the fixtures for the Waterford Crystal Cup (Munster Hurling) and the McGrath Cup (Munster Football)

Does anyone have fixture links for the various warm up tournaments in the other provinces?

EDIT have now got O Byrne Cup (Leinster Football), Walsh Cup (Leinster Hurling) Kehoe Cup (Leinster Hurling tier 2), McKenna Cup (Ulster Football)

Meath have a challenge game against Louth in Haggardstown today and then we're away to Longford in the O' Byrne Cup next weekend.
Time to root out the thermals methinks.

How did the Meath Louth Challenge go?
any new names on the Meath panel?
Will they be missing many college players for O'Byrne cup?

What are the chances of any of these pre-league tournaments actually finishing pre-league , given the weather ?
Will some counties continue in them after the league start-ups playing second strings , or will they pull out altogether ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,706 ✭✭✭premierstone

Was just thinking the same actually re. the McGrath cup plus the fact that there are college teams involved who will be playing Sigerson, I think there is a good chance these competitions may not be played at all.

All O'Byrne Cup games this weekend are postponed, and the poor old Dubs have been up training at 6 twice a week!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 793 ✭✭✭tatoo

Looks as if the weather will relent for long enough this weekend to let some of these games go ahead , though it's still looking pretty ropey in the North , North West and parts of Leinster .

Any news on any of these? Weather calling off some games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,477 ✭✭✭grenache

The McGrath Cup and Waterford Crystal trophy for football and hurling in Munster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 683 ✭✭✭Gingy

Heard that the games could be called off again this weekend. If they don't go ahead, I'd say a few provincial councils will pull the plug on them altogether. Getting too close to the league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,693 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

There's a more detailed thread here (perhaps mods could merge), sorry I didnt see this one when I started that thread.

I wonder if the provincial councils have considered restricting the competitions to county teams and excluding the colleges only for this season in the wake of all the postponements. It would mean the competitions could be run off over fewer weekends and have the tournaments completed in time

Weather permitting, the game should finally go ahead tonight at 7.30 at Staker Wallace's pitch in Martinstown, near Kilmallock. Hopefully JP will have the tea and sandwiches ready for us after the game. :D

Could happen but I think the colleges that enter them would be a bit pissed off if that happened.

There are a number of threads about various provincial early season tournaments, I have merged all of these threads together following a few requests

    Cavan 0-9 to Donegal 0-11

Gareth Smith from the St. Oliver Plunkett's club scored 7 pionts. There was no Marks for either team and a few free-kicks for use the open hand to pass (it's makes no sence at all, they have used the open hand for years now and it will be hard to change that)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,798 ✭✭✭Mr. Incognito

Kerry won with an effective B team with Seamus Moynihan taking over the reigns, interesting. I'm thinking he might be a future Kerry manager.

Most players grew up with the fist pass, certainly men in their late 20s onwards.

Not really. Managers would be experimenting at the monent anyway, giving lots of different players a run, so the manager could field an almost entirely different lineup the second day if he wanted. Good chance to give fringe players and impressive club performers a runout.

Limerick had a facile win today against WIT. Conor Mullane was superb at full back. Jim O'Donovan caught ball after ball at midfield. Ian Ryan and Seanie Buckley also impressed. Pa Ranahan shone from half back. Be interesting to see what kind of team Mickey Ned puts out tomorrow against CIT. No doubt with the likes of Colm O'Neill in tow they'll pose a sterner test.

Typical this time of year game. Kildare had very few attacking threaths, should be a tasty game next sunday against laois ;)

Meath beat Longford 2-13 to 0-13 in Ballymahon. We were unlucky to be behind at half time as we hit the crossbar twice. We were 4 points down at half time but scored 1-5 in the first 7 minutes of the second half and never looked back. Jamie Queeney and Joe Sheridan got the goals. Peader Byrne got some magnificent scores as well.
Referee was very poor and gave far too many soft frees so it was a very stop start game. But a decent performance (in the second half anyway) for the middle of January.

    Dublin next :D

Nothing like seeing you lot this early in the year to start off the year on the right note, shame I won't be around for it next weekend.
