In my experience its reguarded as the 'Unwritten Rule'
Besides, could you go off with your friends sister when she looks just like him? Wouldnt be worth it.

As it was once said in Friends, mates sisters, ex girlfriends and potential girlfriends are all off limits. The unwritten rule of being a mate.

unless they are reall really hot and walk around in her place in her tight little undies and a loose tshirt..................................:D

Fair game TBH, but it is the only time that a man is allowed to be a cockblock, if his cockblocking doesn't work, tough.,

Yeah as was already said, generally no!

I definitely would if I were so inclined but I'd 100% run it by the mate first.

I'd rather not piss off my mate tbh.

It'd have to be a fairly kosher situation.

I'm not sure what I'm happier about - Not having a sister, or you not being my friend :pac:

You have to at the very least ask your mate first. But for the most part I would just consider the sister to be off limits.

It's guys who think that their sister is off limits to all men that are the total nut bars.

I'd ask me friend first to make sure of it.

So instead of asking the girl to go out with you, you must ask them to marry you? Or is it that the mate refuses to talk to you in the period between 'dating' and 'marrying?'.

I wouldn't want a friend dating my sister and here's why; I'd never tell them not to, but if he broke up with her and hurt my sister in any way they'd no longer be a friend of mine.

This is the risk a mate is taking by dating one of their friends sisters, that they are putting them in a position to choose family over a friend should the relationship go south. Family, in most situations, will win out.

Dating a friends sister isn't really an issue. It's breaking up with a friends sister that is.

Personally, I never mix family with friends. I wouldn't date a friends sister for the same reasons I wouldn't butt in on a family argument while over at a friends house.

depends how good the mate is!

started going out with a mates sister, still going with her after 6 years

depends on the mate and how serious you feel about her

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,925 ✭✭✭Otis Driftwood

It depends on the intent. If there is a genuine and mutual attraction there then I dont see a problem with it at all however if its just a shag then Id say leave it alone.

This. If they do break up the friendship is gonna be different, often to the point that it will pretty much end. i used to get on very well with my sisters (now ex) bf, we had a few mutual friends which helped. Since they broke up, I hardly talk to him aymore. Not out of any malice, I just don't. Had it been a good friend of mine, it might have been different, but it's not really a chance I want to take with my mates.

You can't jump right in and shag her. If you do end up kissing, which can easily happen, and you're good mates with the bro then you need to restrain yourself. If you do really like her, and tell him that, and you really are good friends he should give you his blessing.

Unless you've given him datailed run throughs of every shag you've ever had in which case he'll probably kick you in the nads and try to get her into a nunnery

Can't believe how many here believe in Rules when it comes to dating. Everyone is fairgame tbh.

If you've no respect for other people's feelings, this is defo true.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,385 ✭✭✭Jemmy

I know a few happily married couples who would never have met only for brothers/sisters. So yes everyone is fair game imo but not for just a bit of fun, if you are genuinely interested I think why not just don't try hide it on your mate be honest (ive seen this happen and go very badly bcoz he hid it).

It's respect, got nothing to do with rules of dating! What a load of sh*te tbh!
It's like the half your age plus 7! (Altho I've used this excuse before! :P hahaha)

Well... people who aren't single aren't fair game..

but on topic - if you really really care for this girl and think it could be something, then I'd say maybe run it past your friend first, I know people say you don't need to ask for permission, but it's sorta common curtsey if he's your best friend, you can't just date his sister without at least saying it to him first.

If I fancied one of my friends brothers and I really was crazy about them, I know I'd have to say something to my friend first, because she would mean more to me than someone I'd not dated yet.

Use your brain.. if you are going to shag her and dump her and make her look foolish in front of a lot of people she knows then obviously that is just crap. But if you LIKE her, then your friend her brother should be glad that his sister is going out with somebody he likes.

Hmm, depends the reason the brother likes him.

I know alot of my friends would kill me if I went near their sisters. But I don't think that makes sisters off limit's, I just wouldn't go for their sisters.

They wouldn't kill me because I treat women badly, but because they know me, and I can be a bit wild at times!

So it is fair enough, to date someones sister, but I would clear it with the friend first!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,591 ✭✭✭✭Aidric

I dated one of my sisters closest friends for a year and a half. Before we got together she approached my sister and asked her if she had any issues with it which of course she didn't, why would she? There was a bit of awkwardness when we subsequently broke up but nothing we couldn't deal with as adults.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 639 ✭✭✭Seillejet

I married my mates sister and he was my best man.

I remember she was seeing someone else before we got together and I was like what is she doing with that d^&k and he gave me fair warning to steer clear.

However I was mad about her and when he figured that he was cool with it. That said I didn't enter into it lightly and wouldnt recommend doing so if its just a ride you are after.

Only one of my friends has a sister of any note, he'd have a **** attack if I went out with her mainly because he knows of my slutting about younger days. Thankfully I've calmed down and so would he after a few weeks :)

I had a friend for years and I went away to the West and stayed at his parents holiday home ,right after that weekend his sister took a mad liking to me ,I was in his house one night we ran out of beer and he went out to get more .She came home from the pub and she described the night out (bla bla all men are b's etc ) and as she was doing this she took off her high heels then her coat ,then her top ,then her skirt and stood there chatting away in front of me in her underwear .Up until then I had never realised she had such a fit body. She was dead sound and gorgeous and I never took her up on her offer because I knew he would go bananas. I used to meet her out a lot and it would be the same thing with her.

She came up to me 15 times in one night in a nightclub and even waited once until I had finished kissing another girl to start chatting me up.I even was with one of her friends and she still was interested !. It may sound like she was a stalker but it wasn't like that ,she was great company.:D

    No go, no go.
Although I've kissed a couple when I was young. My mates weren't too happy but relaxed abut it, just drunk at party stuff.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 204 ✭✭A racy brainrot

I kissed one of his friends recently. (again, we meet up a lot)
We did the famous both go upstairs at the same time, and kissed.
Any sound or creak, and he would just stop because he was afraid of my brother!!

After that we were both sitting beside each other talking on the couch, and my brother started this whole "what are you thinking now about my sister" .. all that kind of stuff.

He said to just leave everything as it's for the best.

I'm the youngest in a family of all brothers, so naturally there is a protective streak in all of them, but from my point of view, a sisters point of view, a brother needs to lay off
    we're all adults now.

I liked my friends sister until she turned out to be a FRICKIN' BUNNY BOILER. What are you gonna do then, eh? No easy way out. Friendship in the toilet.

It's worth pointing out that every relationship that doesn't end in life long commitment ends in failure. I know that's self evident, but it's very easy to forget.

I had to look this one up

    Bunny boiler

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bunny boiler is a pejorative term for an obsessive and dangerous individual, referring to a former lover who stalks the person who spurned them. The term is normally used for a woman. The phrase derives from the 1987 film Fatal Attraction, about a woman who begins stalking a man with whom she had a one-night stand, during the course of which she cooks his daughter's pet rabbit

Fatal Attraction. When it was first shown on TV, I remember all the lads next day in school going , not because of the rabbit boiling, but Michael Douglas almost snapping his pleasure tool in Glenn Close. Teacher had a right handful getting us to concentrate that day :D:D

    re the OP:

    NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course that's just me. I'd never go near a good friends sister regardless of how hot and/or into me she was. It just feels wrong. I mean even if the friend says it's cool how can you be sure? Not worth potentially messing up a good friendship IMO.

Bingo, you always think they are is kind of weird Freudian **** going down.

I really hate spineless blokes who fancy a lass but don't have the nuts to make a move who then go on to cockblock and talk **** about any chap she might be interested in.

As for mates sisters? Never have, never will.

Now...my sisters mates on the other hand....
