Thoughts? Visually it looks very promising, but
The Doctor using a gun and a hammer?
I'm not convinced yet, but I'm sort of hopeful. Also,
VAMPIRES? To go with the Twilight doctor maybe? :p

Lots of stuff going on, so it's hard to tell so far (although it wouldn't look as dark as we might have hoped).

It does seem though that we're going to get a sequel to:
    Blink
    which could be very interesting!

Weeping Angels, Vampires, looked like a new style Dalek, and was that Yvonne Hartmann I saw?
Promising indeed. Also in keeping with meeting a historical figure every year, he's going to meet
    Vincent Van Gogh

Has that YouTube video been yanked already? It's not playing for me. Loading, but not playing.

Had the same problem, just move the little bar in to 10 seconds and it will load.

I think that video's broken; here's anothe source:

Thoughts? (I'm not spoiler tagging because the video itself is spoilery)

    - I see there's at least one kissing scene between the Doc & assistant. Sigh.
    - More Daleks. Sigh. Though daleks in ww2 does cause interest.
    - Are those reptilian creatures ... Silurians? That could be awesome.
    - Blink aliens return & harass soldiers. How very "Aliens" :D
    - Vampires. Well we had witches, so it couldn't be any worse than that
    - Overall there's a strong looking aethestic. It looks a bit more ... cinematic? Are they using new cameras or something?

    0:24 - River Song

Yes! Really wanted to hear more about the Doctor's take on the Time Traveller's Wife. Loved the book and, as such, have avoided the movie. :)

Looks good... Very happy that the Weeping Angels are back... I'm more positive about the series, because Moffat is in charge now, but I think Matt Smith has big boots to fill after Tennant...

How are we feeling about the
    Geronimo!!

I'm unsure of it as yet.
Also unsure about the snogging, but it's inevitable.
Glad to see River Song but to be honest I don't want to see it as a big massive romance. It narrows down a lot of options!
Loving the Blink angels being back.
    Loving the vampires.

    Generally, really f*king excited!!!!

Done right, this could be incredible. The problem with The Doctor & Rose was that she was always going to be looking at him as a semi-deity. Introduce River Song as an equal and it has the makings of a great story arc...

(disclaimer: I'm drunk on whiskey which always brings out the ould romantic in me)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,664 ✭✭✭doctorwhogirl

True that Sleepy, and River Song is a much better character than Rose on the whole.

I just don't want it to consume the next few years of the series! From what was hinted at in Silence in the library etc... they were pretty intense!

But I'm sure it won't be! Moffat wouldn't go down that road. And don't get me wrong! I do love a *bit* of romance in the series, just don't want it all to be about River Song.

I'm still grappling with Geronimo here. It just sounds like something out of a B movie... but then again it could grow on me, as did "fantastic"....

I hate to break it to you but from what I recall, it gets destroyed, but apparently is conveniently replaced by a new version, just in time for the new line of toys

Not an immediate fan of it myself, but to be fair it may only get sparing use. Don't like catchphrases as a policy though ..

There's definitely something abou thte way that's shot that makes it look very nice.

but he gets a new one, remember River Song will be needing one in the near future.

    This too shall pass.

Looks like it could be quite good. I wouldn't panic about the kissing etc etc just yet as we don't know the context. If you saw Donna and Doctor 10's kiss out of context, you could read the same into it.

I think Matt Smith, coupled with some good writing and good production could carry this off :)

Bugger. Well maybe he'll tone down its overuse - the Library duology seemed to suggest this may happen (when the sonic screw driver didn't work on wood). I'm watching Season 6 episodes and the use of the sonic screw driver (by Troughton's Doctor) is kept to a minimum so far and not used as a cheap cop out to excuse the writer from thinking about plotting.

I wonder what Matt Smith's thing will be:

#9 was mentally scarred from the Time War and generally a bit tetchy.
#10 was a goofball-happy person with tendencies towards a god complex (and how)
    #11 ... uhhhh :D

i don't know the romance with river stone might be good. Might explain where the drs grandaughter came from in the very first dr who series.

might also explain the person wilf was seeing. Might she be the Drs mother/sister/daughter?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 554 ✭✭✭spongeman

I think under Moffat he will be fine. Looking forward to it already.

Blink 2 is a risk though...it has so much to live up to.

Like the look of this A LOT. Can't wait for this series. I seem to be one of the few people who enjoyed last nights episode (you probably already saw my OTT, horrendously long post in the thread) but still think RTD reached his peak a long time ago and that a revamp is desperately needed.

This looks like it could be phenomenal and even thought I've seen very little Old Who I can still see that it looks a lot more old school.

    Basically bring on Spring!

I am so looking forward to this. Stephen Moffat is an amazing writer. The faith is there :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,759 ✭✭✭Killer_banana

I meant to say earlier; I'm not sure if I'm happy to see the Daleks back. obviously they couldn't be gone for good, they're one of the Doctor's greatest enemies but they've so many 'impossible' come-backs in the past few years I had hoped that they would be gone for a good while this time rather than reappearing next season. Still I like Steven Moffat as a writer so there could be a very good explanation for their return.....if RTD hasn't used all the credible ones. :P (I do like RTD but his return storylines were a bit desperate at times).

Looks like a tardis redesign on the cards too. No interior shots of it in that clip and it was getting redecorated by explosions when last we saw of it. Oh yea and crashing. :)

If you want to see the exterior design blogtor who has some nice shots of it.

Interior... was always on the cards, I saw interviews with DT where he said the set was falling apart anyways.

I'd like something a bit more old school. And maybe something more of the interior beyond the console room - sure it was never much a feature of the show at any point, but what harm can it do? I reckon that the Doctor might switch to the secondary console room if the first is messed up.

I'm sorry, but he still looks like Harry Potter's big brother to me.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Me too. Was just watching Castrovala- another Mastery-regenerationy story, funnily enough- and the massiveness of the Tardis is a big point in it. And the white clinicalness of it has somehow gone from being old fashioned to cool looking for me again.

Also I want the roundels back!

Same. I mean if they jettisoned 25% of the TARDIS now (as I recall they did in 'Castrovalva') it would have no meaning as we've never seen any of it. It'd be good to see a long journey to some necessary part of the TARDIS, like the Cloister Bell once was (hell even give us a companion's bed room or the costume room).

    Roundels ftw!

We did see the costume room! In tens first christmas episode.

But yeah, you could do an entire episode, set within the depths of the Tardis. I'd love that in new who. think what they could do with CGI backgrounds.

I'm unsure of it as yet.

I've rewatched the 10th Doctor regeneration scene a few times and the new Matt Smith preview a few times, and each time I have to mute the sound when he utters that word. I can see it becoming extremely irritating.

He's got a helluva hard act to follow. The previous two guys were seriously talented actors external to the Dr who arena. Tennants Hamlet was well worth a punt. And Eccleston has put in some bloody great performances over the years. The new guy is an unknown quantity on that score. Plus you had the good looks of Tennant. He had the kind of look that appeals to all, men, women, kids. The new guy is younger and looks more awkward. Maybe Im wrong but I wouldnt have down as good looking? Maybe it'll actually help him. Fair play for him trying it though. Big weight on shoulders time.

Well Tom Baker wasn't exactly a looker either and it did his popularity no harm. Matt Smith is a bit awkward looking but that tends to suit the role.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,217 Mod ✭✭✭✭Wibbs

Very true. Baker was a well proven actor with a lot of charisma though. He also had an appealing face, not in a sex symbol way of course. That mad eccentric grin etc. Plus the show was a different beast back then. No hanky panky with the doctor at all. You couldnt have say william hartnel or someone like him today. Then again maybe it needs to get back some of that?

Tom Baker? He wasn't that well known when cast, and his previous roles were fairly minor from what I read (I think I saw him in a Sinbad movie once)

i'd say in order to continue it's popularity it'll need to because yes, the show will have got loads fo new kiddy followers, but like Harry Potter it'll need to grow with them.

No he wasnt well known outside acting circles. Mostly a stage actor, though he did play rasputin in a big movie at the time and the sinbad thing. He has screen presence it has to be said. The mad eyes etc. I wonder if the new lad will have that presence. Too early to say yet though. Hes kinda like a peter davidson type. In that he has to fill a helluva big pair of shoes.

Like the interior stuff. Very steampunk at first glance, which is tres fash ATM anyway.

I have to say despite the fact i adore tennant in my opinion its looking good. Its his first year doing it and he's an extremely competent actor so I'll wait and see. Beside David tennants first few episodes were far from brilliant.
