Your Hangover Tactics

So the New YEar is upon us - and so is a nights worth of boozing, partying, etc...

Que in unavoidable headache, shivering, and yelling ralf into the big white telephone the next morning. What a way to greet the new year!

What's your hangover tactics. I use a couple.

If I know I'm gonna be out drinking loads I get very well hydrated during the day. I also eat fruit for the vitamens. Then, when I'm drinking I normally stop an hour and a half before we leave and drink only water during that time. When I get home it;s more water to sober up followed by a slice of bread to put something in my stomach. A FEW hours sleep then it's an early morning jog so the hangover doesn't; have time to take effect :) (the last part is only if I';ve downed like a gizzilion pints)

Any suggestions? What do you do?

I think, bar staying in and not drinking, theres very little more you can do than what you posted yourself OP. Water is the key. Drink a litre of it before bed and its the difference between life and death the next day!

Just head back to the pub again tomorrow. A few more drinks and you'll be right as rain. Hair of The Dog ftw!

I rarely get hangovers no matter how much i drink unless i have mixed whiskey, brandy and a load of dark colored drinks. I take milk thistle daily and i drink lots of water and eat lots of fruit. If it's going to be a heavy session sometimes i take a barocca before going out to put the vitamin b back in. Drink water until i can't drink anymore before sleeping and then a banana when i wake up and a glass of orange juice. If i have a slight hangover that usually stops it.

Have a good meal before you start drinking, preferably with potatoes as the starches help break down the alcohol. Drink a pint of milk before heading out to line your stomach.

Also try and stick to just one drink for the night.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,833 ✭✭✭✭Armin_Tamzarian

Two main contributory factors to hangovers are dehydration and the blocking of the pores.
1-2 pints of water before going to bed is a big help but having a hot shower before going to bed will also help.

Obviously the drunken shower can be come what treacherous so be careful.

The next day get more water into you, a fry-up and sex usually seems to help too.
Best of all try going for a run to get the pores opened and the poison out of the system.

That's like saying the best way to avoid a car accident is to not drive. True. But completely useless as a practical method.

People also told me that drinking a flat sports drink like Powerade (not lucozade as it;ll **** with your stomach) rehydrates you quickly and replenishes electorlytes

    Excercise definitly helps.

Has anyone tried just not going to sleep? Does it work?

Stock up on plenty food before a session. After you get home have a sandwich, it will soak up more than its weight. If ya wake up in the morning dying get some exercise. If your in bed alone and sexercise is not an option go for a walk or run. Job done in my experience. BTW I also subscribe to the hair of the dog solution but thats not always practical.

Not in my experience anyway, if you pull an all nighter at a session you might not have a hangover exactly but you'll be in bits for days.

This works well a lot of the time. It's actually better if you happen to wake up really early and go back to sleep again. The second time of waking and you'll feel a lot better than the first time. I've noticed this a few times myself. I think this is clinically proven too. So you could try and set your alarm for 7am, get up, eat something, and head back to bed again. I just hope you manage to fall asleep the second time of asking, or you're pretty fúcked for the day otherwise. It's clinically proven as your body is sending messages to your brain and all that stuff..

    FYP.

Drinking and having a laugh while knowing my limits and knowing that there's no point offsetting a decent night out with a nightmare the following day.

It's not even remotely like saying that!

No-one's forcing you to drive to excess, or drink to excess for that matter!

Uh yeah...we all know that. It;s a free country.

The tiel of the thread is hangover tactics implying a hangover will be a threat. By not drinking, you don;t need any hangover tactics/solutions.

It;s like a war plan being to stay out of the war. Could be vaugly interperated as one ... maybe by French people! :D

That takes some large self control.

I usually end up getting a few drinks at last orders to have during drinking up time.

YEah but once you get yourself two pints of water you know you've made the right choice. I recon that by hydrating youself before you even get home you've pushing off the worst of the impending hang-over. Gives you at least two hours before bed of hydration :D

Just remember to do it and not forget it because you have beer goggles on!

Eat bananas the next day, drink water. Have something with sodium in it like popcorn since your body pisses that out during the night. You shall be fine after that. Nice name OP btw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,591 ✭✭✭✭Aidric

If I stay clear of spirits the hangovers don't tend to be severe. A swim and sauna always sweep away any remaining pain for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭ashyle

Sleep well into the next day, don't arise til past 2pm if possible. Drink loads of water before bed and have flat 7up nearby in the morning. Then I usually go to work/college don't eat all day (if its a biggie!) then have shocking food for dinner (ie McDs or a chinese)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭Dr. Feelgood

I swear by Alka Seltzer. 2 tables with a pint of water before going to bed works wonders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,974 ✭✭✭✭Gavin "shels"

Think the berocca will be coming out tomorrow, fecking working with a hangover is the devil. Berocca, coffee, fry-up, and then into work.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,214 ✭✭✭scotchy

    Some great tips guys.

But if you do overindulge and don’t manage to take all of these precautions before falling into bed absolutely sozzled.

Then your only man is 2 Solpadeine and a Rubex in a pint of water, and maybe a hot bath.

    :).

Well I usually feel very sick the next day so this whole exercise in the morning would probably end with me gettin sick on the side of the road......

If its a normal hangover after a night on the lash get up out of bed, have some grub, walk to the shop for the paper or something and then another half hour kip if you need it.

If its one of those hangovers that is the result of heading out and only having had a bag of taytos all day, or a hangover that is the result of drinking after getting 2 hours sleep in the previous 48 hours, forget it, nothing will cure that.:(

Why does one need to get p1$$ed to enjoy a good time?, Personally I prefer to pace my alcohol consumption and drink juice alternated with my pints of beer, getting p1$$ED then puking up is no fun at all. Seems most just need loads of booze just for dutch courage

I take two pain killers with a pint of water BEFORE bed, so I don't wake up with headache. Then I take two more when I wake up and if possible go back to bed for a few more hours to sleep off the recovery time.

If I have an upset stomach, I also have alka seltzer.

Any starchy crisps, like snax, or meanies cant go down wrong either. Of course vitamins and hydration are great too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭ashyle

I never take medicine (paracetomol/neurofen/solpadine) for a hangover cos it's usually my own fault and if I am proper ill sometime, the drugs won't work!

Thats a myth. Water is the best thing to take before going out.

Those rehydration packs are good for the following morning with maybe a slice of dry toast and banana.

Fcuk it, tis only a matter of time before we start hooking ourselves up to saline drips before we go to sleep drunk.

I think the milk lines the stomach and helps prevent you getting sick as opposed to helping stave off dehydration.
We used to drink milk as kids before going out on the lash.

thats the myth part. It doesn't line the stomach and prevent you from getting sick. Even the Guinness Storehouse tells visitors that its a myth.

dont drink so much that youre a horrible quivvering mess the next day?

getting drunk doesnt equal a hangover, getting ferociously stinking drunk does. just avoid the latter and aim for the fomer

    not too hard in fairness

Man you are crazy!, Thats not handling drink its abusing your body, If you are a man then 2 pints is plenty for your system, anything more is abusing,

Best way to avoid a hangover, drink little or don't drink. Drinking for the sake of drinking has no pleasure.

i had a major hangover today.

my kid woke me up at 9, and i only fell in the door about 3,
so i staggered to kitchen, downed 2 panadol with pint of water.

then had a yop, then had 2 jambons i got in the shop across the road.

then fell asleep on the couch till 12.

    perfect.
