I was watching mock the week last night and Jo Brand was on it a so called comedian. Her jokes involved been old, going through the menopause and been fat needless to say they needed to use the laughtrack for her.It got me thinking that i can't think of a funny female comedian i can name 5 some what funny male comedians.

    1.Johnny Vegas
    2.Peter Kay
    3.Neil Delamere
    4.Alan Carr
    5.Michael Mcintyre

then the females i can think of
1.Jo Brand (explained already what I think of her)
2.Deirdre O'Kane(best thing she ever done was when she was in that rte drama and was riding ya man while beating the **** outta him
3.Katherine Lynch(Wonderwoman wonder how the **** she got a show)

So can anyone tell me of a funny female comedian please or do you think there's no such thing as one.

The question should be "Did Deirdre o'kane in Intermission give you a raging horn?".

    Victoria Wood:D

Victoria Wood used to be hilarious.

Her special on BBC this Christmas was shit though. Sue Perkins has made me laugh a few times

Cant think of any off the top of my head! All there jokes seem to be the exact same, s*x, men, children and and been fat. Maybe its a confidence issue with female comedians that they dont think people will go to see them if they try jokes that break the norm of their female counterparts?!?!

Well to be fair she pretty much retired from doing comedy -Wanting to spend more time with her family etc.

Dinnerladies was one of the funniest british comedies ever in my opinion which she wrote.

Other than victoria wood er.. Whoopi Goldberg?

Whereas Johnny Vegas's jokes all revolve around him being drunk and fat, Peter Kay's around his various family members being uncomfortable around new things, or acting in an embarrassing manner at a public event, while Alan Carrs all about being ridiculously camp or delivering stories in a really, really annoying camp way. They're just as funny as Jo Brand tbh.

Definitely the best female around IMO

And I think Ellen DeGeneres is alright too

She's hit and miss, can be very funny or dire.
She played at a show here in Brum last week or the week before, "Rock With Laughter" - a family show. Used the word 'cunt' didn't go down too well.

Being shocking/rude for laughs is just lazy IMO.

I'm still trying to think of funny ones.

    Jo Enright's very good

EDIT: And Ellen Degeneres, forgot about her. Though she was better before she came out, afterwards a lot of her stuff was purely about being a lesbian

Shappi Khorsandi bores me, I saw one of her shows and all she talked about is race/terrorism...

Thank you. I hadn't heard any of her stuff, or even of her till you mentioned her, and yeah, I just heard some of her stuff, and its good. I knew there had to be a female comedian out there that didn't make me think "fail."

Not so much stand up but French and Saunders have done some amazing comedy over the years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,817 ✭✭✭pebbles21

    Cathreine Tate maybe ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,555 ✭✭✭Gillington

Yeah OP I'm fairly baffled by your list of funny male comedians,be they in order or not!

Victoria Wood would be my favourite female comedian, never really got into Dinnerladies when it was on but been watchin all the repeats and they are quite good.

At a party once,my mate said aloud that theres no such thing as a funny woman which went down like a ton of bricks! We tried to get a girl and him to have a joke-off,alas to no avail!

Lisa lampanelli is pretty funny. She's an insult comic though, so she is definitely NOT everyones cup of tea. She often appeared on the 'Roast' series done by comedy central.

Nina Conti too with the Monkey but, then again, I haven't seen much else so could be just a one-trick pony....

There aren't many funny comediennes, to be fair. That doesn't mean women can't be funny though - just look at how funny some female Boards posters are.

I used to do some female DJ-ing. :p

I have never been entertained by a female comedian. Some women can be funny, but they must lose it when they go professional.

Also, terrible list. Peter Kay would be the only I'd actually like, and not for his stand up.

    Sarah Palin is hilarious

wait, what do you mean shes not trying to be a comedian?

Still counts as a man. Not a funny man even.

Is there such a thing as a funny female comedian? no there isn't. Silly question, it's like asking someone "do you like drowning?" the answer will always be no.

Just to warn before you watch, her shows generally revolve around race, homosexuality and other tabboo subjects, and she doesn't hold her punches, so do not watch if you fear you may be offended.

Mods, is it sufficient to warn beforehand? If not then please remove, I didn't mean to offend, merely to offer my example of a funny female stand up who crosses the boundaries of what is expected from female stand ups. :)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Sarah Silverman yet...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3RYrQSir7k

Also, people who are essentially saying 'women arent funny'... what do you think of other generalisations along these lines, such as 'black people arent funny' or 'Jews arent funny'? Are these also acceptable things to say, or is it just sexism that is allowed?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

To be fair, men - generally speaking - tend to have a lighter take on life.

Jewish comediennes can be funny (apart from Sarah Silverman - and she's not always bad) - that whole sarky Jewish humour thing tends to make me laugh.

The question is about women COMEDIANS. women can be funny, just not at stand up unfortunately.

Yes i agree, Joan Rivers is the queen of comedy :)

The main poblem with female comedians is that most if not all of them have routines that revolve around the following:

    kids
    men being crap
    periods
    men being crap
    shopping
    men being crap
    how it sucks getting old

and very little else, unless you're Maeve Higgins, who can make the smallest of things seem utterly hilar....

nah i couldnt even finish that sentence, she sucks beyond belief

Well they're both lies, black and Jewish comedians are some of the best around. Except Sarah Silverman, she's the worst comedian in the history of humanity

Women on the other hand suck. Although now somebody has mentioned it I do like some of Joan Rivers' earlier stuff.

Yep. And don't forget getting fat (stretchmarks and cellulite are included under that umbrella) and lady bits and their associated ailments.

    Yawn.
