I am a woman in her mid 50's and over the last few years I have been putting on some weight. currently 11st I tried going for a brisk walk earlier this year but after a few months of daily walking didn't see even a slight improvement. I am wondering now if I could buy some equipment for my home. I don't have a lot of room so I was thinking of buying a kind of "stepper" that would give me a good overall workout. mostly its my tummy and but is the problem. I am not a big eater so I really think its a lack of excises is my main problem. I would appreciate your recommendations on this.
    cheers

Please outline your daily food and drink intake

    e.g.
    8am porridge
    10am tea and apple
    etc

I got a stepper just to try it out, found it incredibly boring and far too easy to do. Check out www.simplefit.org for some very simple but effective exercises, many need no equipment.

well, I useually have two slices of homemade brown bread with butter and marmelade and two cups of tea.. and the same for lunch. for dinner it varies depending on what we are having.. bacon, chicken shepherds pie. hadly have any buscuits (except maybe around christmas) I do have a bit of a sweet tooth as in, I like to chew on toffees. but I am trying to cut them out.
would appreciate any advice. mostly my tummy. I look like i am about 5 mts pregnant. and please dont tell me its just an age thing. I know plenty people who are my age and older who are skinny and fit. I believe I am just very unfit. I get out of breath going upstairs.

It's not just an age thing ... as they say 'eat to look good in clothes, ecercise to look good naked'.

Diet plays a magnanimous role in shaping your body. You cannot spot reduce fat off a certain area so for example if you are concerned about your tummy area, situps will not give you a slimmer tummy. You don't go into much detail on your diet to be honest. If can be very easy to miss where you are racking calories up. At the end of the day its all about calories in and calories out. If you burn more calories than you consume you will lose weight and vice versa.

Regards exercise - do something you enjoy but remember if you do a 30min brisk walk all the good from the walk can be easily undone with just a few toffees.

As regards diet, it might be worth making a note of everything you eat for a week, just to get an idea of what your diet is really like. (It can be quite surprising when you see it all written down.) Just for a week mind, don't get obsessed with calorie counting just yet.

For exercise, how about taking up some kind of activity like pilates or a dance class? My mum, who's also in her mid 50s, recently started pilates and she really likes it. The good thing about a class is that it's structured so you get guidance and you're kind of forced into doing a set amount of exercise. The only problem is that if it clashes with your schedule, you end up doing nothing.

your diet needs a major overhaul and you need to put back on the muscle you have lost over the years - do weights.

Try this program at home as it requires very little equipment

Finally, going for walk are ok on days you do not do weights but your priority should be cutting back on the carbs, doing the program outlined as best you can and drinking more water
