Swap Makalele with Keane and you've got a proper team.

Keane was a 90's player in my opinion

    No Ronaldinho? Impressive.

No Figo? He was pretty useful at the start of the 00's.

Would have Rual in instead of Henry. Rual in Europe throughout the 00's has been more impressive than Henry.

    Figo, Ronaldinho???

    Messi Ronaldinho Ronaldo

    Buffon

    Thuram
    Cannavaro
    Maldini
    Lahm

    Messi
    Essien
    Zidane
    Ronaldinho

    Rual
    Ronaldo

The number of quality players left out would create another top team, plus different formations would allow other players in.

I feel dirty for leaving Nedved out. :(

If you want to get technical about it then Zidane, Makelele and Thuram arent really European neither. I suppose one could even argue Nedved also considering his age.

He wasn't being technical, they played for national teams outside of Europe.

No they aren't and that's a different arguement anyway, they played for a NT in Europe.

Now this is a thread title that is a bit confusing. Is it European players or players that played in Europe. If its the latter then just change it to Best Team of the '00's as all of the world-class players played in Europe anyways.

Yes brother, they most certainly are.

    Zidane - Algeria
    Makelele - Congo
    Thuram - Guadeloupe
Nedved - Czech (Though Soviet Union when he was born 40 odd years ago)

Well Zidane & Co. played for a France a European country. Messi & Ronaldinho played for South American countries & Essien played for a African country. See what I'm getting at?

Thuram, Zidane and Makelele all played for France IIRC. France is in Europe.

Well looking at the opening post he hasnt picked any players from outside of Europe so I'm pretty sure it means just European players.

Tell me where in Algeria was Zidane born then? Marseille, Algeria?

Well Messi and Ronaldinho hold Spanish passports.

So the wording used was all fcuked up tbh.

Anybody leaving out Ronaldo is either lying, or allowing dislike for his personality to get in the way.

From '06 to '09 he scored 81 goals in 145 appearances for the top European team of that period, and this season he has better than a goal a game for Madrid. A team with Ronaldo is going to be a lot more threatening than the same team with Nedved or Figo in the same position, nostalgia aside.

    :confused::confused::confused:
Czechslovakia was not part of the USSR. They were communist but were still an independant state and competed internationally just like East Germany, Poland and the others.

Anyways, Russia do play in Europe as did the USSR at the time.

No Mar-sigh, Pakistan. His father's father was supposed to have conceived his father in Tramore anyways on a sailing excursion. So whether he is African or European is debatable. Personally I think we should apply the citizenship rule to some of these guys. Zidane is currently living in Dubai so if he is not in France for 183 days or more he should be excluded from the list.

................yeah, anyway. He was born in, raised in and played for France. He's as European as croissants.

Pretty sure the OP was talking about players from Europe (or who played for European national sides for those who want to get technical).

    Buffon
    Thuram---Nesta---Cannavaro---Maldini
    Makelele

    Xavi
    C.Ronaldo
    Zidane
    Shevchenko--Henry

the only one I'm not sure about is the CM position. I've gone with Xavi because he was the fulcrum the best team of the decade, but I think Vieira, Keane, Pirlo and Ballack are equally as deserving.

    Still better than Lahm IMO
Or Maldini at left back with Cafu or Thuram on the right.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,983 ✭✭✭leninbenjamin

Lahm's a great full back, but he's quite lightweight defensively at times. The German league's defending isn't exactly its strong point these days either, defenders get away with murder in it, I don't think he looks half as good out of it.

There is only one winner for the LB slot though, Maldini, and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves. Over the entire decade no one has displayed the sheer defensive ability he has, and no one has come anywhere close to his consistency as a player.

Agreed - I'm absolutely aghast to see Lahm included in peoples' teams tbh

Thought it was a case of European based players, so:

    Buffon
    Thuram Nesta Campbell Zambrotta
    Vieira Xavi
    Ronaldo Messi Zidane
    Henry

Otherwise drop Figo in for Messi I guess.
