Anyone up for a bit of duathlon?

OK, I expect a bit of a slagging for this....

I know this is Cycling and not A/R/T, but it's the off-season and I'm running out of cyclocross races so I need a new type of event to come last in before my season of road racing misery starts.

I found this on the runireland site, and it looks fun.

    Race 1: Sunday 17th January 2010
    Race 2: Sunday 28th February 2010
    Race 3: Sunday 28th March 2010

The races are nice and short (2.6km/13km/2.6km) so it doesn't seem the sort of thing which requires months of careful preparation like we normally do around here.

    Who's up for it?

Are there any other closet duathletes on here?

    (apologies for the Dublin centricity)

Keep in mind these are new races, not run before so they may or may not be well run.. hopefully they are. Another option would be the Wheelworx series in Punchestown, one each month also.

I seem to have the 17th January off...could well be on for it Lumen.

I might be on for these, did a couple last year. I can't run very well but those distances don't look too bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 403 ✭✭MadHatter

I'll probably do a couple of these. Unlikely to be January though as cycling and especially running has been curtailed of late with injury and illness. But I'll see how I feel on the day. Having done a few duathlons already I can confirm they are "fun" and somewhat addictive, I find the bike leg a blast as I'm not a racing cyclist so it's great to let rip once in a while. However they are bloody tough events!

I know these are new events for this year and it could be a bit of a lucky dip in terms of organization etc, but I'd like to get down and show a bit of support for them as they are a good addition to the calendar. There's a thread here on A/R/T forum with more details of the event.

Run ? How boring. A real duathalon would be a road and mtb event.

E.g. Start at Balinastoe, lap of the track on mtb, then out on the roadbike in a circuit from Balinastoe, south, then west over the Sally Gap, up north, east over to Enniskerry and back down south to Balinastoe.

I am in....also if that interests you there is this in April which should be fun. It's like a mini Gael Force West.

I hope to do these events.

I did one Wheelworx Punchestown event a few years ago. It was enjoyable - the return leg on the bike route is downhill, a welcome relief after the climbing of the outbound part.

Again, I wouldn't want my silence on this issue to be taken as "tacit approval". Denounce and reject! Denounce and reject! Down with this sort of etc...

I'd be up for that. Will be working in Dublin come January.

    Splendid, misery loves company!

I've signed up for all three races.

According to the proper thread, you can't get one-day licences on the day, so I went a bit crazy and bought full Triathlon Ireland membership for 2010.

Anyone got any man bra recommendations?

Go for an all-in-one. I have a Descente tri suit, it is very comfortable for both cycling and running. You would probably want a medium, maybe large though.

Not really the look I'm aiming for. I am hoping to find something a little more like this (I have the Speedos already):

I'd already verbally committed myself to this a month ago. So I'm in for the first one anyway.

I've just signed up for the last 2 of these races, cheers for the heads up Lumen. This will be my first event so the transition/race demo was a major plus.

As the date of the 1st one has moved to Feb 7th there might be some cancellation places available. If interested might be no harm in dropping an email to the organisers to see if they are going to open up registrations again.

I'm mostly focused on style concerns, tbh. Should I wear my club jersey, or will that bring shame upon them? I have some tri shorts, but how will these look under running tights (it'll be cold, no doubt)?

I also can't find a TT helmet that fits, and may be forced to fashion my own from papier mache and duck tape. Which will look fantastic, I'm sure.

Hmm, I would be on for this. Glad to hear first race has been postponed though as have taken no exercise in past month other than falling over on way to pie shop.

What. There's a Pie Shop. Where? Why did no one tell me?
Do they do sweet as well as savoury pies?

I might do a bit, who know might even do a triathlon before the year is out

Is it cheaper to join TriIreland through a club or is the same if you go solo - as most of you will know, it's cheaper to get a CI licence through a club than to go solo.

I think if you sign up to the newbie race they give you a bit of a chit chat/walkthrough beforehand.

    Cool -

I dont want to write this in the wrong sounding way but will the newbie race be full of unfit people just doing it for the craic

I would be looking at about 4min km's for the run and decent speed on the bike - its hard to gauge which to enter

You'll no doubt be going faster than me then. :)

Speaking from ignorance, I'm not sure the chances of transition area carnage are much lower in the non-newbie race.

I just hope they have full-length mirrors in the transition area.
