Are you a 2012 believer?

Just asking the question, do you think the world's going to end in 2012?

I personally don't, but I imagine on the 21st of December 2012 I'll be anxious. Wonder if it will be chaos, I can see this doomsday prediction getting a lot more attention than previous ones, a movie's been made 3 years prior to the date.

Needs a poll tbh...otherwise believers won't post in fear of being taunted.

And fair enough they are cause it's a load of **** and everyone who believes in it is an idiot. :)

    No, not at all.

I believe that conspiracy theories are a great way to make money out of gullible people.

Of all the conspiracy theories, I think 2012 pises me off the most.

I also find myself sayin 2112 out of habit :pac:

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I'm not saying I believe this will happen but the Mayan calendar is part of history which cannot be put down to a "conspiracy theory".
Although the whole idea seems far fetched our understanding of the calendar ,which predicted every solar and lunar eclipse up to now, tells us the calendar ends on that date mentioned above.

They run out of stone or just get bored? Or did aliens tell them a secret..ha either way it ends there!

No of course not. We had enough of that Armageddon sillyness at the turn of the Millenium; the Chicken Little crowd just keep pushing the date back. There have been hundreds of years that the world was supposed to end, and (obviously) it never happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭dr gonzo

Nah not at all. I always find it strange that the exact people who believe in 2012 seem to be the ones that would be the first to call the Mayan people backwards, they were of course far from it but did they know something we dont or can in any way predict a cataclysmic event? Of course not, if they could they probably wold have prepared for the drought that ended their civilisation.

They had to end the calendar eventually. It just happened to be 2012.

    Nothing will happen. At all.

In my opinion, the director of "2012" will be a bit red-faced on the 1/1/13.

The Mayan calender does end in 2012, correct.

I bought my my nephew a nice Liverpool calender this year, believe it or not, it ended on the last day of December. It predicted all sorts of stuff like footballers birthdays, bank holidays, even christmas, but then it just ended... The new calender will be out around december next year, and ill probally buy him one of those too when the time comes. Not everything is the same, easter will be on a different day, and other such holidays will also be changed.

Our knowalge is limited on the Mayans, we know the calender ends on this date, the reason why is known. Its one of two things, a new one starts, or doomsday. Im for the former, I do believe that we will see some change, poles shifting a tiny bit (as they tend to do), a different constellation or a change in the behaviour of a current one etc. Something will happen, the Mayans were not stupid, but the scale of which is blown out of proportion.

Personally, I wont be buying xmas presents till after this day....hopefully we see some nice riots and I can "pick a few presents up" for a bit cheaper :D I do see it as a widely believed enough to cause some sort of problems...probally riots somewhere, doubt in Ireland we'll be here praying to our Lord Danniel O'Donnel

Pole shifting, even a tiny amount(if thats possible) takes millions of years apparently so thats already been ruled out.

It's a general prediction that isn't specific enough. If I took a **** on Mary Harney it could be considered the second coming of Jesus.

Sorry, I didnt mean Pole Shifting as such, I was refering to its movement. It moves about 40 km every year, which is 4 times faster than its movement 40 years ago, this is what I ment by pole shifting :)

For all we know 2012 marks when the earth counter balances and goes back on itself or the rate of movement speeds up considerably.

However, if it does continue its rate of acceleration in the coarse it is currently taking... we can say goodbye to Russia in 50 years :(

So anyone who believes in this, how exactly do they think the world will end? Will the earth explode? Will our planet get tossed around the solar system like a cue ball after getting hit by an asteroid? Will the world start ending at midnight Australian time or GMT?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,347 ✭✭✭Closed ac

NASA has stated that there will be some unusual solar activity in this upcoming solar cycle, peaking at around 2012.

whoa, that's a lot of people. I would have thought that those who believe in an negative anthropogenic influence on climate are scientists, who deal in data, evidence, facts etc. and that the God believing ones are the ones who don't need data or evidence, just really old books, so that's an awful lot of people!

I believe in 2012, as a year that will come and pass, but not the prophecy crap, would believe in God before that!!

Makes me laugh though all these folks who state that those who believe that anthropogenic climate change isn't happening, as if any of them have looked at a single shred of the actual evidence. They're just afraid the actions that we will have to take will affect their cosy little existence.

No there's going to be massive earthquakes and tsunamis that will kill us all!

Which could result in a freak Solar Flare, that could cause alot of damage.
Not world ending though, but certainly unpleasant.
Oh how fragile our little world is.

No, I'd say that the chances of the world "ending" (whatever that means) are almost nonexistent. And if it does... oh well. These things happen.

Even people who do follow the Mayan calender don't believe the world will end in 21/12/2012, what does that tell you?

There have been countless predictions for the end of the world, the onlyt reason this has been so hyped up is because it's in the very near future. It ain't going to happen.

Oh, and FYI, I liked the movie, so there :p

I just wonder what date these fools will pick for the next apocalyptic prophesy when this one doesn't come true. Better ask the Jehova's witnesses next time they call. They are always good for this end-of-days nonsense.

There's 2 schools of thought for those who believe in the 2012 predictions.
The optimists believe there will be an event bringing about a change in human consciousness.
The pessimists believe that this date will bring an apocalypse signalling doom and the end of mankind.
Being an optimist ,I'll go with the first option and venture a guess that we'll be visited by aliens on this date ,to herald a new dawn for mankind.

Seriously though, I reckon by the year 2000000000012, we could be in a spot of bother. Sol could be coughing out all sorts of trouble at that stage.

But will we be around to see it? And will there be Boardsies tapping away?
