Someone swiped the sign "Arbeit Macht Frei" over the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland.

In English the sign translates to "Work sets you free"

Instead of saying 'this item in your collection' they said 'items within your collection' which meant it was a fishing expedition. This cost a fortune and was paid for by the Hunt's. The accusers (The Simon Wiesentahl centre) were still not satisfied, they called for an investigation - there was an investigation funded by the Hunt museum - the W.centre were not happy with that either on the basis that the hunts funded it, then the Irish govt funded another additional investigation, the w.centre were not happy to have not been invited to be a part of that and so refused the results. Google hunt museum controversy etc. Even the president of Ireland was dragged into it.

It's a crazy thing to steal. You'll never sell it and if anybody ever knew you had any involvement with it you'd be a pariah forever.

I'd say more likely is was a specific thing that somebody paid to have stolen for them and it'll be mounted in a private collection never to be heard of again.

Considering it was recently announced that they are getting something like a €64 million donation from the german govt for 'upkeep' you would think they could offer more by way of reward;

Are you suggesting that they have been doing a poor job of managing the place?
Or that you could manage the place for far less?

that the most recent €64 Million from germany was for Upkeep
and
c)
making sure there is a sign on the front of the building would pretty much fall within the purview of Upkeep
d)
You would agree that it is noteworthy that they have only offered a £1000 reward ?

I can't help wondering if this sign will innocently turn up in the painters workshop being retouched.

The theft of a cultural artefact is hardly a declaration of war (although I doubt they're going to aim missiles at Poland).
