Someone swiped the sign "Arbeit Macht Frei" over the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland.

In English the sign translates to "Work sets you free"

The Gestapo are currently looking into the matter. :D

The Hunt Museum (of Ireland) were in the news recently for housing artefacts stolen from Jewish families during WWII (though I think they may have been cleared, not really sure on that one).

The hunt museum are an Irish museum in Limerick which jews have accused of obtaining stolen jewish goods. Instead of saying 'this item in your collection' they said 'items within your collection' which meant it was a fishing expedition. The museum then needed to launch an investigation to prove provenance not just of every item in it's possession but where it was during the years 1933-1945. This cost a fortune and was paid for by the Hunt's. The accusers (The Simon Wiesentahl centre) were still not satisfied, they called for an investigation - there was an investigation funded by the Hunt museum - the W.centre were not happy with that either on the basis that the hunts funded it, then the Irish govt funded another additional investigation, the w.centre were not happy to have not been invited to be a part of that and so refused the results. Google hunt museum controversy etc. Even the president of Ireland was dragged into it.

Maybe they read the sign from the other side ? You know - backwards, and thought it was a 'Free- make you will work' sign.

The idea that this is sitting behind the couch in some house where people are sitting around drinking or getting stoned makes me want to punch the world in it's big stupid face.

Curious thing to steal alright, I have a feeling there will be a ransom demand, and shortly afterward the thieves will be found dead.

It's a crazy thing to steal. You'll never sell it and if anybody ever knew you had any involvement with it you'd be a pariah forever.

I'd say more likely is was a specific thing that somebody paid to have stolen for them and it'll be mounted in a private collection never to be heard of again.

More likely some drunken Polish student woke up this morning wearing a traffic cone on his head looks around his flat and and goes 'oooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh-whoops'

If anything was cursed, like stuff stolen from a mummy's tomb, I'd say that sign is pretty high on the list.

True, I'm really curious about where it may turn up now. It's not exactly going to be easy to conceal and transport.

Can you imagine! Most of the Poles I know are actually well crazy enough to do something like that when they get plastered. :pac:

    Considering it was recently announced that they are getting something like a €64 million donation from the german govt for 'upkeep' you would think they could offer more by way of reward;

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1236853/Auschwitz-Iron-sign-entrance-concentration-camp-stolen.html

A £1,000 reward has been offered to anyone who can help track down the perpetrators.

Usually I like a good old After Hours joke but err I don't particularly think there is much fun to be got from this. Especially seeing as there is a good chance it is some neo-Nazi's that have stolen it.

I don't understand your position Morlar. When you put upkeep inside quotes...
Are you suggesting that they have been doing a poor job of managing the place?
Or that you could manage the place for far less?
Or that genocide should not be memorialised?
Or that the whole thing should be bulldozed and the money spent on increasing the average industrial wage by 2 euro?

No my position is pretty clear, for such an integral part of so called 'World History' and considering the vast level of donations they recieve from individuals and govts they should offer a bit more than £1,000 as a reward.

Let me ask you - considering the above is that a dignified/suitable amount in your view ?

No of course not. I just thought you were being snarky. Don't mind me, I'm new so I don't really know how this place works yet. In my part of the country, people only put stuff in quotes when they're being sarcastic. Look at this guy. If he said 'upkeep', wouldn't you think he meant something else?

    Ok here is that post without the airquotes just for you;

    Considering that

    a) that cobbled together iron sign is one of the most photographed & iconic features of the place,
    b)
that the most recent €64 Million from germany was for Upkeep
    and
    c)
making sure there is a sign on the front of the building would pretty much fall within the purview of Upkeep
    d)
You would agree that it is noteworthy that they have only offered a £1000 reward ?

Sounds like the current Irish government snagged it so it would not be used against them in the next General Election.

    Eh, sound.
Ya, the reward should be bigger, no doubt.

How can something like that be stolen without someone noticing ? Surely there is a security guard or night watchman on that site, considering the significance of the place ?

I can't help wondering if this sign will innocently turn up in the painters workshop being retouched.
    Simple breakdown in communications ?

Avner Shalev, director of Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, said the theft "constitutes a true declaration of war".

He added: "We don't know the identity of the perpetrators but I assume they are neo-Nazis."

This is going to get nasty

True,we're seeing it from a neutral, dispassionate point of view.
The theft of a cultural artefact is hardly a declaration of war (although I doubt they're going to aim missiles at Poland).
