So its been a while since I watched TBBT.

I laughed once - as Penny tried to make cocktails for the guys and Sheldon asks for a Diet Coke, and then uses a cocktail name to order a Diet Coke.

However overall I still think this is a really really bad sitcom. So lets debate this again :D

Sorry their should read there in the poll.

The Big Bang Theory (How many stars?) 573 votes

***** 5 Excellent up there with the best sitcoms ever
    0% 0 votes
**** 4 Not quite excellent but verging on genius
    27% 159 votes
*** 3 Ultimately average at best
    43% 248 votes
** 2 Stale jokes, bad acting but watchable for some good moments
    18% 107 votes
    * 1 Possibly one of the worst sitcoms of all time and highly overrated
    10% 59 votes

FGS....didn't you learn your lesson from the last poll where your negative musings were CRUSHED with a record poll vote + a two thirds majority saying how great TBBT is?

It's the best sitcom on tv right now...the ratings are off the chart, it's demo numbers are huge, it regulary tops it's timeslot, it's guaranteed a fourth season, it's considered a juggernaught in the biz.

Give it up Elmo, and i *know* your a Gossip Girl fan!!!!!!!!

Just because the majority like something doesn't mean it is good. I am all for stats and stuff but when it comes down to it quality should also count.

Nah, never got into Gossip Girl sorry, What I Like About You maybe. :D

But the poll is looking better this time :)

    I can't stand it.

The Big Bang Theory is one of those shows that wants to have its demographic cake and eat it. At times it seems to pander to geek subculture, with throwaway references to various comic book characters, computer games and scientific principles. At other times it seems to mock the very people at whom it is ostensibly aimed.

The geeks are portrayed as socially hopeless, irritatingly pedantic, and often insultingly aloof. You have to wonder whether it's a show for and about geeks, or just about them. Of course the creators want it to appeal to the widest audience, but does mainstream appeal have to come at the expense of such a negative portrayal of these type of people?

It's the usual low-brow sitcom that the US networks excel at making. There is no depth to any of the characters. The geeks, as I said, are walking stereotypes, as is typical dumb blonde Penny. It would have been nice if they'd challenged some preconceptions, but sadly they couldn't be bothered.

Its because the title of the thread was wrong and the poll was completely unscientific, unlike this title thread and a Star system of voting on the poll. The anti-TBBT's will win :D

I gave it 4 stars. There's quite a few sitcoms better than it. Mostly British sitcoms and a handful of American ones, but it's still up there with there, no doubt.

I've never understood the appeal of this show. It's awful, the characters are Saved by the Bell style nerds, Penny is the same character as Bridget in 8 Simple Rules. In the interests of fairness I watched the last couple of episodes to see if the later series have gotten any better but I didn't even crack a smile once. I could however predict the next line about 20% of the time.

She's going to say Yikes! Christ they're milking it she is quite obviously about to say Yikes! Stop rolling your head woman and say the damn word and get it over with. Huh! Perhaps they are actually going to avoid going for the obvious 'joke' that was telegraphed in several scenes ago. No, she just said Yikes! It was even less funny than I'd anticipated it to be.

I gave it two stars entirely because it's such a car crash that sometimes if you flick on to it you just find it really hard to look away.

    I like it.

I gave it 4 stars because it's not the best sitcom ever made, but it's really entertaining. Certainly one of the best American offerings in a long time.

I don't look for nerd racism so I wouldn't know whether it's offensive.

    I watch it for Sheldon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

I've noticed since Penny started dating Leonard she is being seen less and less in her hot pants and low cut tops. Oddly, purely coincidentally of course, the show has really been going downhill imo since Penny and Leonard started dating :pac:

I'd mirror the sentiments of others in that the show seems to lack focus on who it's demographic is. Half the time it is clearly pandering to geeks and nerds, but the other half of the time it's mocking them and portraying them as how jocks and cheerleaders probably view them.

Maybe it's because I've finally gotten around to watching through all the seasons of Curb your Enthusiasm back to back and watching TBBT in between and I'm realising just how not funny it is. Unlike Frasier even there's no punchline to the episodes, they are just a series of minor sketches with laboured jokes, and Sheldon slowly becoming a caricature.

I'll probably put the next season on layaway until it's finished and see what the consensus is then. I don't imagine I'll be wasting my time watching it week by week.

Pretty bad alright. I'd watch it with the sound off for Kaley Cuoco though.

Two and a Half Men is wildly successful. So is King of Queens. Does that mean that they are also exempt from criticism?

People don't know what they want. People voted for the Nazis and listen to Coldplay.

Because it gives people a choice.

Yes could mean anything, as could No, Meh could go above or below 3 stars.

    Anyway it is pretty even.

The only good thing about that episode. But I debated that in the last thread :D

This just shows how low US sitcoms have gone in the last 10 years.

The poll is too broad imo. I mean there is a big difference between "Not quite excellent but verging on genius" and "Ultimately average at best".

I'm somewhere in the middle of those two options. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it but anytime I do it makes me chuckle. So I'd pick good but not great if that were an option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Just take 4 stars as being It is nearly as good as the top comedies but not quiet there. The use of the word genius is off putting but 5 stars is genius. 3 stars is just simply average as it is between poor and excellent.

    ***** 5 Very Good
    **** 4 Good
    *** 3 Average
    ** 2 Bad
    * 1 Very Bad

Or you are giving it 4.5 stars, Or I would need a 10 star system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭The Sparrow

Yeah it is the use of genius in four star that is offputting.

    ***** 5 Very Good
    **** 4 Good
    *** 3 Average
    ** 2 Bad
    * 1 Very Bad

That is a much better rating system and I would vote 4* based on it.

It really worries me that 46% of people feel this show is either verging on genius or else one of the best sitcoms of all time.

    WHAT. THE. HELL?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭iguana

Is Kaley Cuoco really that good looking that she alone would attract an audience? Really?

She's undeniably attractive but she is hardly stunning or beautiful. And she seems too charmless to be pretty or cute in that 'girl nextdoor' kind of way. American television is full of beautiful women, I think in comparison to most American tv stars she's incredibly average.

I really think people are really over analyzing it by nit picking on characters, plots etc. It's just a simple 20min show that gives you a little giggle here and there. No different from Two and a half men etc.

It deserves 3.5 stars IMO just because it's not all about sex or using witty euphemisms for sex, but I gave it 4 due to the options on the poll.

It is an absolute joke voting this as being one of the all time best sitcoms. Fraiser, Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers and Fr. Ted would be considered as a few of the all time best sitcoms and there is absolutely no comparison between these and TBBT. It is just another American sitcom with a few cheap jokes, with no depth in the characters or storylines.

    The options in this poll are woefully done;

    4* = 'genius'
    3* = 'average at best'

I dig the show, it's probably my favourite thing on at the moment and I've seen every episode at least a couple of times. Given that there is apparently nothing between 'genius' and 'average', I had to vote it as 'genius', although I don't think it's quite that.

It's definitely not one of the best of all time, it's not in the same league as Father Ted or Fawlty Towers, but it is a good show.

Whatever the result of the poll, popularity isn't a measure of quality, just look at X Factor.

As far as Penny's attractiveness goes, her face is not the feature I'd have gone for!

This was explained genius is not genius it is almost genius 5 stars is genius. #

5*Very Good (One of the best i.e. Genius)
4*Good (Nearly one of the best i.e. Almost Genius)
3*Average (Just as many similar ones out there)
2*Bad (Nearly one of the worst)
1* Very Bad (one of the worst)

I just was being descriptive in the with the titles

What are people basing their star system on. 5 stars clearly states "one of the best comedies of all time". Even if you like this show and enjoy watching it their is now way it comes close to the best comedies of all time the are plenty more out comedies not just in this decade but in the history of comedy that are far superior than this.

Their are plenty of shows that I enjoy but I would not recommend and I would only give 1, 2 or 3 stars to. I don't like this show but it isn't a 4 or 5 star show no matter how much you like it.

The poll is not a popularity poll it is a critical poll. For example Xfactor is a 3 star show no matter how much you like it, while the The Wire is 5 star no matter how unpopular it is.

Are you kidding me? I like Frasier but it's the same thing over and over again! "Oh, what a delightful misunderstanding about who you're dating/I'm dating/the Opera"

It's certainly not one of the best sitcoms of all time.

I agree Frasier isn't but it is a 4 star show. But this isn't even there with Frasier.

What really annoies me about this show is that for some reason they need to put on a funny voice and slouch to "pretend" to be a "nerd". I wouldn't mind but the voice they came up with aren't even good.

Look I could have given a scale of out of 10 but I went with 5 stars as that is the usual. Now to me the description you give is a 3 star rather than a 4 star. You don't regularly watch it and by the sounds of your post your not going to recommend the show, this to me is a average/forgettable show - not one of the best or just missing something (5 and 4 stars).
It deserves 3.5 stars IMO just because it's not all about sex or using witty euphemisms for sex, but I gave it 4 due to the options on the poll.

It is misogynistic, the main female character is thick and good looking and the main male characters are "nerdy"/"geeky". And all of the other typical stereotypes you want to talk about. All of the guys continue to look for sex. So sex does play a part in this show.

The one thing that pisses me off about the show is the fact that to the guy that plays Leonard, apparently nerdy = squinty

Why does he squint all the time?

That's only a small thing though, it's still funny

HAHA!!....Elmo getting well and truely pwned!

It doesn't change my mind that this is the worst sitcom in the history of sitcom and it it truly dissappointing to see so many people think that this series is one of greatest. It doesn't even come close. I have laughed more at Drake and Josh than this muck pretending to be comedy. This poll truly proves that US sitcom is currently in the its worst era and that the sitcom is truly, truly dead.

From the writing to the acting this show is an overrated series of the highest order.

The end of quality US sitcom began in 2001 who new it would be dead by 2006 with the likes of 2 and A half men and TBBT. The list of great US sitcoms is endless and for the first decade of the new millennium we get piss poor versions of The Odd Couple and Saved By the Bell pretending in some way to be comedy.

People really really need to start looking elsewhere if this is the type of "comedy" that they are looking at, truly dissappointing for comedy as a genre and sitcoms as a format.

    :(

No, it only shows that of the people who have seen and chosen to vote in this thread, most do not agree with you.

Anyway, I like TBBT. It think the stories are funny, the characters are likeable and interesting and I will continue to watch the show as long as the above is true for me.

Does it offend you that much? I suggest you just don't watch it TBH.

Hardly. 47% have given it 3 stars or less. And despite the words "the debate" a lot of people who dislike the show still wouldn't look at the thread. If the title was "The Big Bang Theory is Awful" you'd have a better idea as non-fans would probably look, while fans definitely would.

I have no problem with you liking a show absolutely none but to seriously even suggest that it is one of the greatest comedies ever made is pure bull****.

I just find it madding that people watch this sh1t and think it is quality TV when it clearly is not.

Well if the mods want to change the thread to "Is The Big Bang Theory the Greatest/Worst Sitcom of all time - The Poll" then they may change it but in fairness to TBBT watchers this would be unfair.
