Switching to WiMax - questions

Right so. Currently I'm with Imagine for my broadband. I have their 3Mb DSL package for €25.10 a month with a 20GB cap (I also pay an extra euro or two for 60GB download allowance). The upload on this is quoted as 256Mb but rarely would I even get close.

I can't get a faster DSL product because I'm told my line does not support it. This leaves me looking around at other options.

I'm looking at WiMax. How exactly does this work? Is it a little box like Ripwave or something? Is this gonna have any effect on gaming? Seems I can get 7Mb for €35 / month which I will jump at it. Does it use my phone line?

    Thanks

Big thread about it in the midband forum, only 2 users have posted very poor speedtests so far. Lots of advertising and marketing, no proof of product. You'd be taking a big chance

I'd stay on dsl, mobile wimax is midband

They talk about mobile wimax and wimax ... as if they're separate products? I'll read through the other thread anyway.

Nope, they call it fixed wimax when it has a fixed reciever, but having any nomadic users mean they can never control contention. Its all mobile wimax, Motorolla don't make any fixed wimax gear, Read the thread, it'll soon turn You off it

Was on fixed wimax for about two years. It was perfect for downloading and just general browsing etc but it was fairy bad for gaming, I used to keep getting ping spikes a lot. Now on dsl and its much better for gaming.

You weren't on fixed wimax, wimax has only been introduced a month ago

Some other providers have been using Fixed Wimax (not this mobile farce) for 3 years, Wimax is not new to Ireland

O2 did a 4 month trial of it about 18 months ago, Intel has done a trial and Maynooth has an on campus one, but other than that can find no one else. What companies are you talking about?

Sorry something went wrong posting other message did'nt think it was posted

Dunno, The Taoiseach even was there at the Imagine launch, Eamon Ryan even gave it a plug, pulling the wool over the peoples eyes like they're doing with the National Broadband Scheme. People actually believe it though. This country............

OK, just got the 7MB package. Includes a VOIP siemens handset that my wife is using right now...no apparent lag during calls, very impressive.

Looks good, but something's iffy with the broadband. Right now its flying, as you can see, but every now and again it just drops off the net. Pages either take forever to resolve, or mostly load and then just sit there. I think the Thomson router they provide is a pile of crap, so I'm hooked direct into the dish feed for the moment. PITA.

I had to wait two weeks for them to install it, despite promises that it'd be in with 3 days (hah!). So it only was installed on the 23rd (3 days ago).

I'm living in an old ex-council house bungalow in Blackrock. Thick walls, which I think was causing the initial problems with the connection to the new 27" imac in the back room. Damn aluminium... They wanted to establish a wimax connection to their deansgrange site, but Belmont was coming up very strong so they overrode their own initial advice and set me up. I'm about 2.5km as the crow flies from belmont.

NOW, its not working. Loading speedtest.net is taking forever. This is bypassing the router.

    NOW, it's working again. Freaky.

I'll need to see how the VOIP phone works during one of these dropouts. EDIT: it doesn't.

Any questions, tests you recommend to pinpoint the problem?
