Liverpool v Wigan [Match Thread] Nando's 100th

What worth a win against Wigan on a wet and windy Wednesday?;)

A win and a clean sheet please for Nando's 100th.

Johnson and Masch both have late fitness tests.
Sounds like Masch is likelier to play than Johnson with Rafa saying Masch's substitution the last day was more of a precaution and the fact that he was on a yellow was part of the decision to sub him.

If Masch is out it means Aquilani and Lucas in midfield.:)
If Johnson is out it sounds like Degen at RB:(

Don't know what the story with Kelly is but would have him ahead of Degen seven days a week and twice on Sundays. Most likely doubt about match fitness given he's been out of action for such a long-time.

Fitness test players aside, I'd imagine the team pretty much picks itself, with Insua back in for Aurelio, and Benayoun on the left.

Fingers crossed the Wigan who played Spurs turn up as opposed to the Wigan who beat Sunderland.

Also as mentioned in the title thread Fernando's 100th game for Liverpool tonight. So far he has scored 60 goals in 99 games, with an average goals per minute on the pitch of one goal every 126 minutes. Even more impressively all of these 60 goals have come in open play i.e. (no penalties, no free kicks)

A hat-trick would be a great way to mark game number 100.

    Wednesday, 16 December 2009
    Premier League
    Liverpool v Wigan 20:00
Venue: Anfield Date: Wednesday, 16 December 2009 Kick-off: 2000 GMT

    TEAM NEWS
Liverpool will give late fitness tests to Javier Mascherano and Glen Johnson after both picked up knocks in the loss to Arsenal on Sunday.

The Reds are optimistic Mascherano (thigh) will recover in time but Johnson may miss out, with Philipp Degen set to deputise at right-back.

Wigan midfielder Hendry Thomas is available after serving a suspension on Saturday.

It means manager Roberto Martinez has a full-strength squad at his disposal.

    Liverpool

    Suspended: None

    Doubtful: Johnson (unspecified), Mascherano (thigh)

Injured: Babel (ankle), El Zhar (ankle), Riera (hamstring)

    Wigan

Suspended: None Doubtful: None Injured: None

Can't torres playing tonight and saturday so which one is he left out in?
Personally think tonight as is the "easier" of the 2 games and is at home.

1-1 pool to score in first half and wigan to eqaulise with about 20 to go from a setpiece.

Would imagine he will feature strongly in both with second-half substitution on the cards in both games.

with his recent injury problems I just can't see him starting 3 games in 6 days

Just hope that Wigan take a leaf out of Mick McCarthy's book and put out their best team possible

    2-1 Wigan for me.

We need a win badly especially with Villa on the form they are on.

I'll take a 1-0 scrappy win with the ball going in of Lucas's left testicle.

    Have a happy 100 Fernando.

    Lucas in midfield.:)

Never thought I would see a combination of those words and a smiley face.

    I'd say 2-1 Liverpool.

wigan have been shocking away from home this season, so hopefully they'll continue their poor run. liverpool are in shocking home form, but you would think that with better players we can do the biz. plus it is shanks anniversary party, so the crowd should be in boisterous mood and you would think that will lift the team.
however, if i was a betting man (and i am ;)) i'd be backing the draw

Source for Johnson out? :( Gah why cant Kelly be fit.

Carra v Degen at right-back is a horrible choice - one offers very little defensively and one offers very offensively .

Also if you have Gerrard CM and Aurelio on the left, surely you'd play Benayoun central and Kuyt on the right? Benayoun always plays better in the centre and Kuyt would provide more cover for Carra defensively compared to Benni?

no reliable source so to speak but have heard it on other forums. Have to wait I suppose. Big loss if he ain't fit.

I forgot all about Degen - might be worth a shot. The thoughts of Carra at right back makes me feel ill

Says it all about Degen's status really. :(

I'd probably have him in RB ahead of Carra given it's Wigan at home and you would expect/hope that we wouldn't be under massive pressure defensively.

Probably get more of a better benefit having Degen running up and the down the wing like some sort of Swiss Speedy Gonzalez.

Have Carra as CB alongside Agger.

    Liverpool:
Reina, Carragher, Skrtel, Agger, Insua, Benayoun, Mascherano, Gerrard, Aurelio, Kuyt, Ngog.

Subs: Cavalieri, Aquilani, Torres, Kyrgiakos, Lucas, Darby, Dossena.

    Wigan:
Kirkland, Melchiot, Boyce, Bramble, Figueroa, Scharner, Gomez, Diame, Thomas, N'Zogbia, Rodallega.

Subs: Kingson, Amaya, Cho, Scotland, Koumas, Sinclair, De Ridder.

    Referee: Phil Dowd (Staffordshire)

No Johnson, Lucas on bench with Aquilani and Torres - we're fooked!

    Liverpool to win 4-0 imo.

Really dont like the look of that team.

Carragher at right back ? N'gog, Kuyt, Aurelio and Yossi as our main attackers ? Bleh.

    Fingers crossed...

What is going on with that line-up?? I imagine Aurelio is playing alongside Mascherano. Is it not about time we started with Aquailani?? And why Aurelio over Lucas??

Will still be 100 if he comes off the bench?

I don't know though, seems the same old rafa mentality, where i would start him and try get a comfortable lead ( which lets face it should be possible) Rafa likes to have faith in the others and bring on the others if needed then.

Its probably a 4-4-2 with aurelio on the left. If its a 4-2-3-1 with Aurelio in CM I will get a flight to Liverpool and slap Rafa in the face.

Yeah, i'm thinking is that gonna be the formation? He has played Aurelio in that Lucas role on a number of occasions though. But the fact that both Lucas and Aurelio are both on the bench suggests it could be 4-4-2
